Hey everyone hope you enjoyed the reaction! Unfortunately this version is a lot shorter than normal compared to the patreon version. Had a lot of copyright issues with this one so hopefully it is still an enjoyable reaction. This movie was such a great experience and watching Mary Poppins was such a fun reaction!

Oh, boy. I just have to tell you how Julie Andrews got the role. So, when Disney first got the idea to do this film and started casting, she was on Broadway doing My Fair Lady and Camelot. He came backstage to talk to her, and asked if she'd be interested in flying out to Hollywood to give the movie a look, see if she was interested. Her response? "Mr. Disney, I'm so sorry to tell you this, but I'm pregnant." His response? "That's okay. We'll wait."
@StoryMing
@StoryMing 2 жыл бұрын
My understanding was that she was passed over for the film version of My Fair Lady because she was not thought to be “cinematic” enough, or some such nonsense (the role went to Audrey Hepburn). I was seriously irked with the powers-that-be in Hollywood for _years_ because of this, but finally made my peace with it when I learned that if Julie had been in the other movie (which filmed the same year), then the world would never have had Mary Poppins.
@videohistory722

@@videohistory722 I love that moment (in the DVD extras)! Although I hear this has led to speculation whether Julie won that award as sort of compensation for not getting the part in My Fair Lady. I’d say she earned it squarely on the merits of her performance, myself. I’d still love to have seen her as Eliza in the film; but Mary Poppins is one of my very favorites ever, so if it HAD to be one or the other...

@@StoryMing She did not get a role because she wasn't well known. She hadn't made a movie before and most movie goers did not hear of her (unless they were Broadway fans). That is why she did not get cast in the movie, they wanted someone famous that would bring in viewers and money.

Yup! It’s made especially clear in “Saving Mr Banks”. Which is also why the original Mary Poppins is so much better than the newer one. There was no “antagonist” in the original. There was conflict in the end at the bank, but there wasn’t a singular person throughout the entire movie. The original movie is about learning a moral lesson, not a generic “good vs evil” story

People seem to be ignorant to the fact that not everyone has seen the same movies as them due to age, circumstances, or sheer having no interest. There are a lot of popular movies I haven’t seen simply due to no interest and I’m way older than you. People are shocked and some get angry, which is the stupidest thing ever 🤣, as it doesn’t affect them personally at ALL. Just have fun exploring films on your own terms and time.

You grow a little older and you think "man if only I could go back and experience that all over again!" The next best thing is watching someone experience that same enchantment. That's why most of us watch channels with people watching things for the first time. You aren't stupid. You're watching things you haven't before. Even I haven't seen everything, especially prior to my year of birth. Malicious ignorance is the only thing I can't stand, which is much more like disrespect. But not knowing something instantly? Julie's husband, Tony Walton, who did much of the set design and some of the costumes, came up with the backwards bit. Thing is, it's not exactly backwards. Much of the word is split into sections, rearranged in reverse order, but said forwards as usual (the last bit, "docious", is the first bit said "backwards", but Julie says it the same way, "docious" instead of "suoicod"). The only part truly said backwards was "super", which came out "rupus".

There are several great stories about the making of this masterpiece, but I think my favorite will always be about Dick Van Dyke as the eldest Mr. Dawes. He apparently stayed in character the whole time, to the point that the two child actors had no idea it was him until the end credits on Premiere Night. 😆 Jane's actress Karen Dotrice later said they were just watching this poor old man cough and stagger around and were saying to each other “Wow, we’d better get this take right fast. This guy’s about to croak!” 🤣 Another is that after shooting the rainstorm scene, Karen got sick and ended up in the hospital for a time. And during this, Walt Disney came to visit her and brought her one of those giant life-sized teddy bears. 💖

Another great Disney Musical from this era to watch is Bedknobs and Broomsticks with Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson (the father) from this film. Many facts for this film: 1. P.L. Travers who was the original author of the Mary Poppins books had refused Walt Disney’s offers to make it into a film for over 20 years and so in the late 50’s he actually went to meet her in her London home hoping to use his personal charm on her and so soon after she finally gave him the rights to make the film, but during the early stages Robert Sherman who was one of the songwriters along with his brother said “She was a witch” and absolutely hated everything everyone was wanting to do, but she was basically only a consultant, after the release of the film she wanted nothing to do with it and in the early 90’s she allowed the studio to only do two things in regards to the property.If they so choose to a sequel film could be done. A broadway show, but no one involved with the original film could be part of that project, 2. When Glynis Johns received the call from Walt to be in the film she though she was going to play Mary Poppins, but Walt wanted her as the mother and so she said as a little incentive if she could haver her own song for the film and so the Sherman Brothers rewrote a previous unused song called “Practically Perfect” into “Sister Suffragette”, 3. Many songs and sequences for the film were thought up including where the children would spin a compass and it would take them to different areas and a different song for each area where one was called North Pole Polka, another Tea in Timbuktu, while the other two unused songs found their way in other Disney films later on with The Land of Sand being reworked to become Trust in Me in The Jungle Book from 1967, and The Beautiful Briny Sea would end up in Bedknobs and Broomsticks, 4. Several of the women who wait outside to apply for the nanny position are actually men because they couldn’t find enough ugly women. 5. In the animation sequence people like the songwriters, Julie Andrews and multiple others do voices and David Tomlinson voiced Mary Poppins Parrot umbrella at the end. 6. The choreographers Marx Beraux and Dee Dee Wood would go on to do the choreography for many other classic musicals including: The Sound of Music, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and The Slipper and the Rose which is why the Step in Time dance sequence seemed familiar to you to Chitty Chitty and Dick Van Dyke had no previous dance training, 7. Several of the chimney sweep dancers were the old men on the bench in Enchanted during the song “That’s How you Know” 8. The woman who played the Bird Woman is legendary Actress Jane Darwell who starred in over 100 films and at the time she had been retired, but Walt Disney convinced her to be in the film and personally sent a car to pick her up everyday and treated her like Royalty. 9. Besides being Bert in the film Dick Van Dyke as Mr Dawes Sr when he would be dressed up in all that makeup he would troll the backlot tours by making them think it was an old man and cross in front of them as slowly as possible then right as they were about to pull away he would sprint off as quickly as possible and that credit was at the end of the end credits as Navckid Keyd and then the letters unscramble themselves to spell Dick Van Dyke plus there is a chorus reprise of Let’s Go Fly a Kite: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaWXeqJ5hN-ng7c 10. Julie Andrews was hoping to be in the film version of My Fair Lady which she started on broadway, but Warner Brothers wanted someone who was actually a star as Julie had not been in a film yet so they went with Audrey Hepburn. However the story doesn’t end there as Julie Andrews was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy opposite Audrey Hepburn for My Fair Lady and she won and in her acceptance speech she ended it with “Finally my thanks to a man who made a wonderful movie and made this all possible in the first place Mr Jack Warner.” and everyone lost it including Mr Warner with him laughing, Then at the Academy Awards this film was nominated for 13 Oscars and won for: Best Actress, Best Song for Chim Chim Cheree, Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, and Best Film Editing. It was nominated additionally for Best Picture, Director, Art Direction, Costume Design, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Scoring Treatment, and Sound unfortunately losing many of those to My Fair Lady. 11. Know before Walt had chose Julie to play Mary Poppins several people that were thought of as possibilities included: Bette Davis and Angela Lansbury then one sunday night the Sherman Brothers saw on the Ed Sullivan Show an excerpt performance of a broadway show called Camelot where Julie Andrews was the lead actress and they knew immediately she was the one so the next day they marched into Don Dagradi’s (another writer on the film) office and he said to them did you see the Ed Sullivan Show last night so all three of them went to Walt’s office and so then Walt went to see a performance of Camelot in New York and met with her after the show and was able to convince her to be in the film and Walt was willingly to wait as she was pregnant at the time and Julie’s husband then also ended up part of the film as he designed all of the costumes, 12. Dick Van Dyke ended up in the film because of an article Walt read of how he didn’t like that films then were becoming as he described as “dirty pictures” also it helped that basically everyone knew who Dick was as he had a hit tv show with The Dick Van Dyke show and this was only his second film after being in a film version of the broadway show Bye Bye Birdie, 13. Ed Wynn (Uncle Albert) was the Mad Hatter Walt always wanted to have him in something he appeared in several other Disney films including: The Absent Minded Professor, Son of Flubber, and Babes in Toyland. 14. When they were in the early development stages of the film Walt gave his songwriters Richard and Robert Sherman a copy of the book to read of what they thought would be good material for the film and they underlined six chapters in red crayon and when they went in to see Walt they handed him the book and he chuckled because in his copy of the book he had underlined the exact same six chapters in red crayon as well. 15. The inspiration for the song “A Spoonful of Sugar came with Richard Sherman’s son came home from school and he asked what had happened to learn he had been given the polio vaccine to which his dad asked if it hurt and he explained no they put the medicine on a sugar cube on a spoon and we swallowed it. A literal spoonful of sugar helped the medicine go down. 16. The inspiration for the song Let’s Go Fly a Kite was actually from the Sherman Brothers childhood as there dad as they said would make these wonderful kites that would fly all day, 17. The inspiration for the song Step in Time is actually an old english folk song called Knees Up Mother Brown and the Sherman Brothers learned about it as Peter Ellenshaw who did the vidual effects and matte paintings and glass paintings for the film was basically they resident Brit taught the dance to on3 of the writer Bill Walsh and Walt Disney and Richard Sherman saw the three of them with their elbows linked together in the office kicking their knees up, 18. The inspiration for the song Supercalifragilisticexpiladocious was the Sherman Brothers wanted to make it so Mary Poppins gave the children a gift in the form of this ridiculously long word and the medley for it was two British Folk Songs: Boiled Beef and Carrots along with Any Old Iron, 19. When the brothers were playing songs for Walt one day a couple hours they thought would work for the film at the end he asked them to play that bird woman song again to which Walt walked over to the window saying “That’s what it’s all about isn’t it?” Referring to the theme of the film. It was Walt’s favorite song the studio ever made and every Friday Walt would meet with the brother and just talk about things going on at the studio and other projects and at the end of their meeting he would always ask them to play the song by saying “Play it” and when they finished it he would send them off saying “Have a good weekend boys.” 20. Even after Walt’s death Richard Sherman would still go into Walt’s office on a Friday afternoon and play the song and on what would have been Walt’s 100th Birthday he went the celebration when the dedication of the Partners statue was unveiled and played the song saying it was only for Walt at the end of the song he blew a kiss to the statue said Happy Birthday and walked off, but he was told later on that when he was nearing the end of the song out of the clear blue sky a single bird came down near the piano and off back into the sky. 21. All of Mary Poppins was filmed indoors. 22. The old woman that children encountered when they run away from the bank is Actress who voiced Cruella DeVil in “101 Dalmatians”. 23. When on the carousel the horses match their personalities, 24. The two children in the film Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber appeared in a total of three films for Disney together this was their second the previous is The Three Lives of Thomasina and the latter was The Gnome Mobile unfortunately Matthew would die of Food poisoning in the 70’s, 25. The reason there is Penguins is instead of waiters is that Walt Disney saw Storyboards where they were men and he said “Waiters always reminded me of penguins”. he one issue you brought up about the bank is it is supposed to be awkward as that is to counter-balance to all of Mary Poppins Magic and be something more grounded and boring which is what excites George Banks.

Bert I feel is underrated in Mary Poppins. At least I felt that watching this reaction. I even didn't realize (maybe kind of) how important he was in connecting Mr. Banks to his children and vice versa. Mary Poppins probably could have only done so much without Bert in this movie since he understood Mary Poppins and her role and also how the world was/is since he lives in it and sees things every day. He knew when his role was important at the end since he knew just what to say when it was called for. He had such wisdom and willing helped Mary Poppins complete her mission. And I would like to think Mary Poppins knew Bert so well that she deliberately sought him out to help her on her mission because she knew the impact he can make on the people around him. Makes me want to know how else Bert has helped people on his own without Mary Poppins involved. I'm sure his character has because he's such a kind caring person. Maybe Mary Poppins brought that gift out of him or befriended him because of that gift.

I agree in a way he gets to the father on an emotional level . Mary could deal with Mr. Banks on his level but opened their world up and let them see they what was possible. On the note about Saving Mr Banks, I love that fact how they reveal that the reason Mary Poppins comes is literally to save the father, not the children. So the whole scene with Bert in the ally(and Bert with Mr. Banks in the living room), is showing how bringing joy and laughter back in the home saves Banks from the long droning life he has been leading for years. George Banks thinks his career has made his life great at beginning of the film, but doesn't realize the how little of work he has put into his family. Mary's whole purpose is to plant real fun and love within the home and remind him of what's really important. The moment you realize that in Saving Mr. Banks movie, it brings a whole new way of viewing the original film.💙

Others and myself said it before and we'll sa it again. No need to apologize for your reactions. When people talked about Disney Magic, this movie is one of the reasons. While Disney in general still makes entertaining movies, the pure fun of some had has gone away. The sad thing is she left at the perfect time. They'll remember her and her lessons, but if she stayed longer, she would overshadow their parents and the family that just got togehter again could fracture. So, her job was done and she had to leave. Though I'd like to give a perspective, that rarely comes up. Because she loves the children so much she knew she had to go. That it hurt her is, from her point of view, a small price to pay to stop the possible long-term pain her presence might bring. Aside from that, there are other families that need her help. Some people have been able to look at the technical aspects of the movie and discovered a technical miracle. We have to remember, that there was no CGI back then and some other technologies weren't available or not very advanced. When you look at some scenes (managing to ignore the movie) you'll find details that make you wonder how they did it. If I remember right, the rooftop scene was done with 7 layers of film. It was a combination of matte paintings and and filmed parts to make the background come alive that was impossible to do any other way. But to think, 7 layers had to be planned out so they would mesh. And that is without mentioning the coreography or the 'special effects' of jumping into and out of the chimmneys. And to top it off, 59 years later the movie still draws people into it with few being able to resist it. Just the cut reaction gets me. So again, no need to apologize for your reactions.

You reflected the magic exactly. If you ever have the chance to see it on the big screen, it’s breathtaking - it comes around every so often, very worth it.

The fact that Dick Van Dyke played both Bert, the musician and artist who's friends with Mary Poppins, and Mr Dawes Sr, the oldest of the old men at the bank, is still crazy to me. I almost did not believe it until I saw some behind the scenes type stuff.

As a kid I don't believ I had any idea it was him as the old man. I think that's the point honestly.

Ah, the old family films used to be brilliant, I don't think they've even put this on the TV for a long long time in the UK, probably something or other about it gets someone somewhere on the channels offended these days, I just see it as a nice happy film. (The only complaint as a Brit is the more you hear Dick van Dyke's impression of a English accent in this and Chitty Bang Bang you notice it certainly wasn't his forte haha.)

I think it’s considered one of the worst accents in movie history. Even he admits it’s awful. I just laugh at at as part of the movie silliness.

Hey Nick- you should see My Fair Lady. It's a musical from the same year, and it won Best Picture. It's in my top 10 favorite movies also! :)

I don’t think you understand how much your reactions to these films have an impact on people. To see these films for the first time are totally magical. But once you’ve done that it’s not so good. However, your reaction is just BEAUTIFUL and AWESOME, and watching this film for the first time through your eyes is just beautiful and I got taken back in tine. Thank you Sir. Long may you continue. Love the channel and much respect.

Im sorry about how people have been negative! If you loved this, you'll love Chitty Chitty Bang Bang if you watch it again! Bedknobs and broomsticks is a classic, too! You are doing a great job and as always, lots of love and support from Hawaii! 🌺

I love watching your reactions to these movies, and anyone who thinks they aren't genuine can't read people. I actually didn't like Mary Poppins when I was a kid, but as an adult I absolutely love it. Enjoyed the reaction so much!

If you liked the dancing from the rooftops, try watching "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". It's the pinnacle of incredible dancing in a great musical.

Watching Nick's videos is like watching a movie with a close friend, and it sucks that people are being rude to him, common guys give the man some slack and let him live his life

I loved this movie as a kid. But when watching it now, during the Covid pandemic, it seems to hit even harder the importance of compassion and charity. Looking for positivity in your life, giving your time for other people, etc. I’ll always love “Feed The Birds”.

Mr. Banks shook his hand with every chimney sweep and the kids remark that he will be the luckiest man. At the end of the film he realizes that he is the luckiest man to have his family and all the fortunes that he has.

58:10 This part always confused me too. I think the idea is that these things were given to him by the bank, so doing this is equivalent to tearing stripes off of a general’s uniform when he’s been demoted or dismissed. 🤔

I didn't see it in the comments so I had to write it. The head of the bank, that old man with the walking stick? That's Dick van Dyke. Just incredible acting and make up. 😀

Fun bit of trivia. The choreographer for the chimney sweep dance was the same choreographer for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and the old bamboo scene. And Dick Van Dyke was the old man bank owner. He reprised that role in Mary Poppins Returns.

Ok, so I don't usually comment on these things, but I tend to obsessively watch reactions to specific shows or films, which means that in some cases I end up seeing pretty much all the reactions to them available on YT. There are maybe three or four reactors whose uploads I actually anticipate, and you are among them. Your emotions and reactions resonate a lot with how engaged I get when watching films alone. Not getting everything immediately and mixing stuff up is a part of losing yourself completely in something. Honestly, that's the strength of your videos so please look at negative comments with a critical eye. Not everyone needs to like your content and there is plenty different style reactions where they can find what they are looking for. Don't regret or neutralise your strengths to match someone's preference. Especially if that someone is being rude towards you.

This is probably my all time favorite Disney. I used to watch this movie back to back as a vhs tape. When it would be finished, we’d hand rewind it and then watch it over again. The songs are all so timeless and so drive the story forward. I can’t think of another movie that’s done that.🥰🥰🥰🥰🙄

love this reaction! fun fact: dick van dyke played Mr. Daws (old banker). One of the days he was shooting the bank scenes, he left the set in costume and was at a crossroad when a Disney tour bus came up. He pulled the trying to get off the sidewalk and crossing the road in front of the bus. After he passed and the bus continued on, he then proceeded to sprint after the bus and passed it lol!!!
