@pervy sage.maybe he/she isn't trying to be different at all. Some people don't get emotional during movie scenes like that one. It all depends on the kind of mood you're in. I've cried during sad parts of movies and I've also seen sad parts that didn't phase me at all at that time. It just depends on the vibe or mood one is in.

If you love this movie, highly recommend Bridge To Terabithia (1985 or 2007) to be added to your list. Fun Fact: The willow tree that is seen throughout the movie is not a willow tree. Due to issues finding a perfect pond with a willow tree by it, the creators had to find a different tree, remove all of its branches, and replace the tree's branches with fake willow tree branches.

When I was a kid seeing this, (I was 11 when this came out) I thought Vada's dad just ignored her. But watching this at 41, I see that Harry knew what Vada was doing and why, he wasn't stupid. He also knew that one day, Vada would have questions and ask about her mom. He knew he would have to face his pain to be able to do so, but as the time quickly approached, he put up a shield as you saw when Shelly approached him about Vada's behavior. He closed off his emotions. Shelly was able to get Harry to open up about it, but Vada was able to help him get past it and finally put his grief to rest. Their talk at the end is always my favorite scene. ❤❤

Okay, this movie hurts more now than it did when I was a kid. Didn't think about it at the time because I hadn't seen the movie in awhile when this happened, but the scene where Vada's dad sits her down to talk to her about Thomas J reminds me so much of the night my dad sat me down after I got home from visiting my mom's family and told me that one of my two best friends was gone.

Actually this came way before Bridge to Teribithia, and the only and whole reason that (Teribithia) movie exists is because a mother's son's best friend was struck and killed by Lightening in real life and so the mother wrote the story to help her son cope. So more like Teribithia pulled a My Girl but based on Real Life. These two movies are alot alike.

such an amazing classic that I knew would get you in the feels. not sure if you noticed but since you didn't mention it in the reaction: Vada's mood ring was always black because she was basically super depressed about death and dying her whole life. she thought she killed her mother and her dad pretty much ignored her cries for help. once Shelly came into their lives and Thomas J. died, they were able to connect and she was able to realize the truth about her mother. by the end of the movie, her mood ring turned blue which meant she was no longer sad and could actually be happy, like her dad wanted for her. I love this movie so much and I hope you'll react to the sequel, which is just as good and has most of the same cast.

I watched this again recently for the first time since I was a kid and I really enjoyed it...and the death of Thomas J, even as prepared for it as I was, I started crying when she started saying that he needed his glasses....and I looked over at my husband's which were sitting on the table not far away, while he slept... And I couldn't help but think to myself, 'What if something were to happen to him...and all I had left of him was his glasses...?' 😭 My mind takes me down some pretty fucking dark paths, especially if I'm alone and watching something sad, late at night. The whole scene at the funeral scene with Vada at Thomas J's coffin is sad but I always lose it at the "he was going to be an acrobat" line. Even typing it out has me fighting back tears

This movie is one of my childhood favourites. I lost my mother when I was young too and this movie is an emotionally pitch perfect exploration of grief and death right down to the health anxiety Vada experiences. It's something I still suffer with even as an adult. It's also common for people who have suffered childhood bereavement to have trust issues with new people in our lives and often pine after people who are uattainable, hence the crush on the teacher. The reason for this is that there is no realistic chance of the feelings being reciprocated by the other person and therefore no possibility that we could love and ultimately lose them too, it's a way to protect ourselves from the pain of another loss but, as Vada discovers, you can't hide from loss and pain bevause life will throw everything at you so the only thing we can do is cherish the people we have in our lives while there here and make sure is means something.

This movie is one of my favorites of all time, it’s had a huge impact on me since I was around 4-5 years old and was the first movie to ever make me cry. Somehow, even being so young, I still understood a lot of it (presumably because I had lost my uncle around the same time, so I was aware of the concept of death already). Fast forward close to 25 years later, I’m now a mortuary student who has also lost my childhood best friend within the last 2 years, so it hits even more emotionally now for me, but not in a bad way. Most people see this movie as just tragic and depressing, and while Thomas J’s death is that, the film itself is more than that. It’s an unconventional coming of age story. Just because you’re surrounded by death, like Vada and Harry, you can’t stop living your own life to the fullest. It has a similar tone to the show Six Feet Under, which is also about a family who live/work in a funeral home and how they cope after the death of one their own.
