I read an article about sexual abuse that mentioned that only about a 30% of sexual predators have been sexually abused themselves, so being abused as a child doesn't really makes you a predator automatically. I guess some of them are already born with it or have experienced constant abuse to the point it's normal or they want to hurt someone as much as they were hurt.

Ive heard several stories where non-offenders had tried to reach out and get therapy services, but the therapists reported them to authorities, for falling under the "harm to others" umbrella that they're required to report. Regardless of what action we're speaking about, or how morally right or wrong, it would definitely be a deterrent if you knew getting help would also gets you in trouble.
@allexmussen9107 Жыл бұрын
This has been something that always bugs me with therapy. I know why the rules are in place, but sometimes the rules really just fk up things. When you turn away people trying to get help and not do anything bad, you're p much helping funneling them into doing the crime yk? Edit: this isn't entirely targeted towards just paedophilia, I'm also talking about therapists who refuse to work with kids that are having violent urges, or people who have ocd and need to talk about their intrusive thoughts, or the people dealing with the worst parts of ptsd, etc etc. This is about how there's lots of people who could be helped by therapy but get turned away because they're "a harm to others"

THIS! I’ve been learning a lot about paraphilias such as pedophilia, zoophilia and necrophilia and I have talked to a few non offending people who have those and most of them struggle to get help due to the lack of knowledge on it. It’s sad honestly, I feel like therapist especially should learn more about it before judging immediately. We are already in this habit of thinking, “oh you’re attracted to this? So that means you act on it!” Which isn’t true at all. (Sorry for the random rant reply lol, I’m very passionate about stuff I like learning about, this being one of them.)

The system is unbelievably good at finding people who are hard to rehabilitate and just like neglect them until something really bad happens. It’s the same thing for addicts. Addiction is villainized and stigmatized so it’s incredibly harrowing to seek help as well as it’s incredibly expensive. I worked with a guy who was recovering from meth addiction, and people CONSTANTLY shit on him, despite him being clean for almost 10 years. He was such a genuinely great guy and even after getting help, people would continue to berate him. Being attracted to minors is A MILLION times more stigmatized and in this case it’s honestly for a pretty damn good reason. I can’t imagine how hard it would be to admit you have that problem, seek help, and then try to reintegrate into society if it’s even available. Hell, fat people experience the same type of harassment. They get relentlessly harassed for their weight, dehumanized, and then harassed even if they go to the gym. When stores make athletic wear for plus size people, the stores get shit for it, like people love to say “just lose weight” but when these people actually try they just get even more shit.

@MomeRathOX6 ай бұрын
I’m not 100% sure if it’s the case in Belgium, but you have to be super specific when you’re baiting pedos in the US. You can’t reach out to them, they have to come to you. Age has to be publicly available. You have to get them to actually say something incriminating. What they want to do, where they want to meet, what they’re bringing with them, etc. Basically you have to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the pedo is willing to engage in illegal activity with a minor. If you get anything even a little bit wrong, or they can cling onto a tiny shred of plausible deniability, the pedo has an “entrapment” defense.

In my opinion : pedophile generally fall into 2 categories. Pedos who are pedos due to sexist/patriarchal views and pedos who are pedos due to a psychological disorder. Sadly for hundreds of years having a young wife was seen as high status and better than an older wife, or even just having a young mistress. And that idea has last well into the 21st century, so some people (especially men) grow up thinking that a young girlfriend/wife is best and just don’t grow out of that stupid mindset. As for the second one - that can be due to a lot of things such as previous abuse, head injuries, or a manifestation of mental illness. This type are more redeemable in that they usually can’t control it; until they act on it. It does really suck for those that can’t control the attraction andrefuse to act on anything. I can’t even imagine how much they suffer from those thoughts.
