It was in the script tho, Dylan O'Brien(stiles) and Tyler Posey(scott) actualy came to the set because they wanted to see it when they were filming. They both had a day of work, so they did't had to be on the set. But they came to the set because of this scène.

"Shouldn't they know what happens when you don't become a werewolf?" They know, they explain it later in this season. You become something else, it's like a reflection of your soul. Lydia is a special case though, but we spent season 2 trying to figure out what she was and even when you know what she is, her character and power have so much development through the seasons that it's difficult to explain what she is. I won't say anymore, I don't like spoiling shows, but you should watch the whole thing, it's actually really fun. Oh and Stiles does get some change in season 3, Void Stiles is the best thing of this show
