Good God people. I can't believe the level of hostility directed at this young woman, she clearly appreciates and respects the quality of "The Exorcist" and is unafraid to admit she is scared by it. Imagine when you were her age watching a 40 year-old movie chances are you'd be pretty chatty through it too Her responses are great and hilarious she says she's traumatized by the crucifix scene and scared by it- her pausing it and crossing her legs saying ouch! Is absolutely priceless

It was the summer of '74 (when movies used to play for months) and I had just turned 12. My mother had taken me to see some R-rated movies - good ones - by then, but she was very hesitant about this one. It was a Sunday afternoon and we got as far as a neighborhood theater across from a park, bright and sunny, and I spent the next half hour pleading my case to my mother as to why I was old enough to see it. I was desperate for her to say yes. She finally relented - maybe partly because she wanted to see it herself and we went into this smallish theater and - for the first time - sat in the back near the exit door. I watched the first 30 minutes like a champ and when it started to get rough watched literally the rest of the movie through my fingers in front of my face. Shaken? Hell, I was stirred.

it kinda bums me out that this generation's attention spans are technologically-impaired. I can remember being like 10 or less and wanting to see the monster, so cut the chitchat, but by the time I was like 13-14, no problems watching the setup. But in the cell phone video game age? Their brains are formed to need visual/auditory stimulation constantly. Often reflected in style over substance Michael Bay-type action flicks...but if you don't have character and setup and motivation, the action, unless truly groundbreaking, can be boring itself. Hell, even in John Wick, which is basically fluff with incredibly choreographed action, we know they killed his dog, the last link to his dead wife-and his humanity. We then find out he's now a completely lost A-1 assassin killing machine And I like the first Wick. No snob here. It knows what it is and is original in its 'gun-fu' style

Even during the 70s, viewers had problems with the slow first and second acts. Most TV shows and movies are plot-driven where the characters are incidental. Because this film is based on a novel and the screenpkay was written by the novelist, the emotional impact of the last 20 minutes or so comes from the detailed character development in the novel. The author chose the crucifix scene to convince the mother who was not a believer that there is a devil and by extension God. There is a skill to remain patient during slow burn films but know that there will be a payoff.

Not this girl, but so many people say, "The demon killed the old priest." No, no, no. The old priest's heart gave out because he was already ill, but the demon couldn't touch him, his faith was too strong. After initially insulting Merrin and getting no reaction, all the attacks focused on Karras. Merrin's faith was strong, but his body was weak. Karras's body was strong, but his faith was shaky - up until he sacrifices himself for the girl. In all the times I've seen this, I thought Karl said something about "traps" (for rats), and never realized he said, "IT wants no straps." IT... right to the girl's mother... how creepy is that? Also, I never see anyone mention when Chris is pleading with Karras for help on the park bench, she says, "Jesus Christ, won't somebody help me. God, who will help me." Meaning, of course, that's exactly who WILL help her. When Merrin says something like, "Do not despise my commands because you know me to be a sinner." it's very powerful. He's clearly a good man - holy even - but is humble enough to know he's still a sinner too.

@Brad 2021 Agreed. This wasn't a comedy. This was a movie that caused mass hysteria and had people throwing up, passing out, having panic and anxiety attacks, fainting and running out of the theater in sheer terror. Hard for me to take a reaction serious when they're laughing, cutting up and cracking jokes. I remember seeing this movie when I was 11 years old back in 1973. I also remember being so scared I couldn't move and the audience reactions made it even worse. I didn't sleep well for months afterwards. @@FredFukkinBear My word you seem to be one spoiled and ignorant senior citizen. Someone reacting the way you want them to react doesn't make it more "authentic." I mean this reaction is probably more authentic than most, considering she acted the way the vast majority of people are going to behave when watching this in the modern day, without hamming up how frightened or sullen she was to appease the most judgmental of oldheads. I don't even see how you'd rationalize your criticism...she only laughed at one part (the flame in the attic, not that big of a deal) and very obviously was shocked at every other scene. You're going to try calling it a bad reaction because she can handle the shocking scenes of a 50 year old movie in a much more realistic way? Lots of people can keep a smile while still appreciating heavy context. Not everyone is going to see things the exact way you see them or behave the exact way you behave. Pretty ridiculous of you as a seasoned person to interpret that as some type of insincerity.

I just turned 52, was born in 1968, and before this movie came out I wanted to be a priest. I saw this when I was around 10, and have seen it at least a hundred times since. I've also read the book many times. Over the years, I have gone from being scared of the horror of it, to being thankful for my faith (even though I never became a priest), to weeping (even while watching your reaction video). The slow beginning is for character development. We become invested in all the characters well being. The thing that really gets to me is the priests. The young one, Fr Karras, having never dealt with anything like this before, being a psychiatrist with a scientific perspective, and his feelings of guilt. In the end he becomes a martyr for the girl, thereby finding faith. The old priest is also a martyr. He has faith, but knows he must sacrifice himself. Not just for the girl, but for the young priest.

I always felt father Merrin couldn't handle the task. Bad heart. It was not so much that evil won but that Merrin was not physically up for the fight. When Karras finally sees that Merrin is dead he has to redeem himself. He feels a failure as a priest. To his mother. He tells the Devil to "Come into me, Take me" . Its like he's saying "I am done, you can kill me now" by doing so he saves the girl. This ending was really powerful in the theater. The Exorcist is a great film.

Traditionally with a Ouija board you end a session with "Goodbye." Closing out the connect with the spirit. The movie trope is if you fail to say goodbye the spirt will remain. That is why the spirt was blocking the mother, it didn't want the connection broken.

The Reality, is that Anyone whom is able to Tune into the Spiritual plane.. enough to connect with a "Lost Soul" / Demon... There is no such thing as a "Goodbye" Safety mechanism. You choose to become a "Host" by inviting the being to be amplified and operate through you. Since these entities are non-physical, they have no real power on the Physical Plane, unless then have a Physical Host, to use as an amplifier and gateway between planes... Once someone has "Opened" the gate... they often find it difficult, to impossible, to close it. To take down their "Spiritual Antenna", and turn off their "Radio". This typically happens due to Fear. The entity creates Fear in the Host...and feeds on that Fear energy. Over time...the Host starts to believe that the Entity has more power than themselves... and its at that point, where something like Possessions can take place. Fortunately.. most whom mess with an Ouija board, do not actually believe in it... and so, they dont actually connect with anything. Unfortunately... many HAVE connected with very Dark and Malevolent entities... and it has lead to some very Tragic events. There are many factors at play. For example... Dark / Tormented Entities, tend to be attracted to a person who is: Negative, Angry, Hateful, Depressed, Full of Guilt.. etc. On the other side of the coin... they are generally Repelled by people whom are: Happy, Loving, Content, Forgiving, Positive.. etc. I realize your post is merely to clarify, and that you may not actually believe... but this is a warning post to others.. as well as some potentially helpful information. Also, a cool movie about the Ouija, is "Witchboard".

Apparently, the fears of the OuiJa board started with this movie. Also, the "cross masturbation" scene did not exactly involve her. They had her stabbing a box between her legs that you couldn't see, and she didn't exactly git why, and the close-up scene was an adult doubling for her. Older movies often move slower than they do now. Attention spans are shorter than they used to be. But this movie freaked people out when it came out. It was supposedly based on a real story of exorcism, though a person who was friends with the boy who was exercised said he was a practical joker. His name is kept secret but became a priest.

This is one of my all time favorite movies & favorite horror movie, I first saw it when I was 8 or 9 years old & it was life changing. The version you just watched is the director's cut, not the original theatrical release. The original version doesn't have those early scenes in the Dr's office where Regan is acting aggressive & trippy, the "Captain Howdy" face isn't flashed on the screen every 10 minutes & the spider walk down the stairs isn't there. I think the original cut is stronger as it doesn't tip it's hand as early as to whether she is truly possessed or mentally ill. Those added scenes kind of screw up the pacing just a little bit, both versions are great though.

I watch this film every year or two and I always watch the Theatrical Cut. BTW its not really a DC, as Friedkin was happy with the 1973 version. He did the 'DC' as a favor to the writer, who was a devout Catholic.

Another one who thinks like me. I have both versions and 'go to' one is always the original cut, it's also the one I lend to somebody if they're watching it for the first time. The extended version would have been a lot better if they just left out the crappy CGI effects (it never needed them then, it doesn't need them now!) and perhaps left the spider walk as it was originally filmed. I hated what they did during Regan's hypnotism where they superimposed that demonic face over her; it didn't need that - I always liked that 'go to hell' look she gives the psychiatrist before she grabs his balls.

Yeah, this is the “Version You’ve Never Seen.” The movie was re-released to theaters 20 years ago with some previously deleted scenes (including Reagan coming down the stairs). The only new scene that really added anything to the movie, though (in my opinion) was the one where the priests are taking a break from the Exorcism, and Karras asks Merrin what he thinks the demon’s reason was for possessing Reagan. Reagan’s walk down the stairs was a little silly and over-the-top, I think. That was done far more effectively and creepily in the book. In the book, Chris has spent the night mourning Burke’s death, and in the early morning, she’s in the study talking with Sharon. Suddenly, Chris looks up and sees Reagan bent over backwards in a bow, quietly skittering across the floor like a spider with her tongue snaking out and heading for Sharon. The chapter ends with Sharon turning around and seeing Reagan and freaking out and Chris telling her “Call that doctor!”

Just so you know, exorcism's were EXTREMELY rare when this film took place, IIRC it had been decades since one had been performed (usually because what people thought were demons WERE actually medical disorders, and the exorcism's done to those people psychologically damaged them), it was actually BECAUSE of this film that exorcism's came back into fashion and got re-integrated into modern culture. Also if you are an atheist, then the concept of performing an exorcism would be ridiculous to you (as it is to Reagan's mother), it wouldn't even cross your mind as something to do because you consider it equal to something like a voodoo shaman painting chicken blood on your child's face and then dancing in a circle, or a celtic druid making her eat leaves then sitting next to a tree and humming
@gtraxxa7-TTv

It may even be possible that the last exorcism before the movie was the actual case that inspired the book, from a boy of 14y in St. Louis, an exorcism that took 12 weeks to be finished. Also the medical procedures used on Linda Blair were real. Somehow they convinced her mother to allow they to be performed. One of the radiographer technicians was Paul Bateson (I think this is the name), who later was convicted of murder and was supposedly a serial killer.

Great makeup effects by the legendary makeup artist Dick Smith. NOW I understand that people can not watch these older movies in the theater anymore or "React" to them, BUT you can watch the movie at night, with the lights off and on your TV, with Flat screen TV's you can hook up a video cables that capture the video and your reactions to what it is you are seeing for less then 50 dollars. When I was 17, my brothers and I went to see this film when it came out. It scared the you know what out of us. The next day, Sunday, we got up and went to mass. I love the movie. I think it is still the best horror movie ever made. Back in 1973 it was very shocking. It was the first time we heard language like that, and the exorcism scene was the most realistic scene ever. We heard that when it was shown in certain cities, people started to vomit, some fainted, others had to leave the theater. It was, and still is, a very powerful movie...I love it. Your reaction was very enjoyable. It made me laugh how you reacted to the ugly scenes. Don't listen to the negative comments. I think you did a great job.

Speaking of great makeup, the actor playing Father Karass was actually a young man at the time.

Fun Fact: Pazuzu was a deity in Sumerian Mythology who was associated with plagues, harvests and locusts. He was also ironically a protector of children from another unpleasant deity called Lamashtu.
