I was less surprised by akwafina being in the remake and more they picked an even more terrifying/gross seabird for it (likely cause the plumage is more interesting) if you know anything about petrels. IIRC, Desire was the specific (infamous) inspiration for Ursula, with some rumors they wanted to just ask her but.. uh given her rep it made her both a good inspiration and a reason Disney didn't want to do that.
