It's a really weird line but it kinda makes sense. Think about it in terms of like weird old school connotations, "gentleman's game" so it's like well mannered, chivalrous and proper and all that shit. "Man's sport" cause it's rough, violent, masculine, aggressive and strong. That's why he was reprimanding the kid to shoot more. That line should make more sense now but it's still an odd line.
