I was working in a gaming store when Wrath of the Lichking released. We got promotional material ahead of time, including a cd with the trailer. We put it on loop in a viewing corner of the store. Chills throughout the day until the midnight launch. People were so hyped. Burning Crusade and Wrath are excellent expansions. I think you would enjoy both, and especially Wrath, as it brings a satisfying conclusion to the end of The Frozen Throne. You can actually experience them on non-hardcore Classic Cataclysm servers, or, if you don't mind outleveling content to experience it at your own leisure to soak in the environments, ambience and content, consider creating and playing a casual retail character.
@higochumbo893218 күн бұрын
Oh, my first first. =) And yes, they were both amazing, specially as a Warcraft 3 player. The only one that comes close is probably Warlords of Draenor, which is also a massive nostalgia wink to Reign of Chaos.
@PhilipAlexanderHassialis18 күн бұрын
I see your WoD nostalgia but due to ...reasons.... (*cough*DaddyIllidan*cough*) I am kinda impartial towards Legion - basically the ingame cinematics more than the opening.

I was there Gandalf, I was there 3000 years ago... In all seriousness tho, for a WoW / W3 fan, these intros really were sick. On top of that the graphics were top notch, back in the days when these rendered videos were still not the norm they later became. Producing these was not cheap and Blizzard was regarded as among the utter handful of best studios when it came to producing these. "You are not prepared" became a catchphrase for a reason. And then WotLK came. The music... still getting chills to this day.

Remembering seeing all the pre-release for TBC for the first time, how *mind blowing* the Draenei were as a reveal: We'd seen these creatures before, but only as the Eredar, the big bad guys, Archimonde, Kil'Jaeden, and the Draenei were these kinda pathetic bean-people who show up in Frozen Throne helping Illidan. To connect the two, to have them appear as an ALLIANCE race, and primarily as Paladins, light-wielders, was such a sudden dissonance and reversal of everything we expected.
@noname360916 күн бұрын
To my memory this is not only my favourite expansion in wow but this is where I had the greatest gaming experience of all time even though I played mostly on private servers, the greatest back in the day 2006-2012. ❤

I remember the TBC trailer had me fairly excited yes but more so because we were getting an expansion. The whole idea of an expansion was to me until this point wholly new, so it was the first time I experienced something like this. They were gorgeous but ofc Illidan was what got me go wooooow. That being said. The WotLK trailer is just, one of the best game trailers made to this day. Seeing THAT for the first time had me incredibly hyped. I was quite impressed how well they managed to model Artahs in the game itself.

By the time the cinematic was released, they had already announced Blood Elves & Draenei as playable races. I'm gonna say it's neck and neck with Legion. And now TWW is in it's own class with realism that faked out literally MILLIONS of people -who thought Anduin wasa literal actor in a physical environment. It took Thrall appearing and moving closer to start breaking through that. Given that BLizzard did use Josh Keaton's likeness (but not Motion capture) to create the Anduin for TWW cinematic [enough so that I, someone who has spent a decent amount of time on stream with Josh, with a closeup, recognized the EYES immediately]. I was screaming at my monitor "OMG its JOSH!". And of course Josh's general face with his voice was just insane. They have set one helluva bar for the MIDNIGHT cinematic to say the least.

You could say TBC is the absolute height of the player base growth *rate*, partly I believe the illusion of level creeping is first introduced and mildly affecting. Unlike Wotlk, which all previous items power are squashed into non-existence. Which is uncool. 17 years later, you could make an argument, if wow should operates just solely based on level 60, at all.
@ZakhadWOW16 күн бұрын
by the end of Dragonflight we would have been level 120 without the level squish. ANd of course we got the item level squish before BFA, and even earlier on still was the simple numbers squish to bring damage numbers back down out of the millions and billions. Can you imagine the numbers necessary now if we hadnt adjusted? We'd be up in the qunitillion rage! LOL And iLevel would be like 3000 or something insane.
@nightsage21716 күн бұрын
@ZakhadWOW yea. but the playerbase dwindles regardless. Borrowed power or power squash isn't really a good choice for long term emotional investment. instead of linear progression, i personally prefer side progression. But it would be more like TF2 at that point, everything is a side grade and no personal progression to make.

I always felt like Tbc is one of weaker ones as its more like "feature showcase" mixed with very little story, Illidan had huge potential for very badass story focused cinematic. Wotlk one is pure cinema tho, one of the best. Also while Cata one is too up high there, if you can, i recommend you Wod one, it have that old school warcraft vibe mixed with wow storytelling (btw, as you are w3 veteran, i bet you would recognize references to w3 heritage in it :D), sitting at top with wotlk one. Also you are right with wotlk being one of the most beloved for many. Tbc is fan favourite too, but wotlk was more polished and i think it spoke to much bigger audience... but, many tbc purists dont like it as much as it introduces some "quality of life" improvements that they consider as start of making game too easy (while i personally like them, i have to agree with it, wotlk started to be much less grindy and "hard" game as vanilla or even tbc, and end content started to be more important than road there).
