Mercari Just SCAMMED Me Out Of $500 And It Could Happen To YOU

Yooo this scam is really bad right now especially with used car parts. I admin 3 different BMW used part groups here in Canada. When People make a post a LF something they always respond saying check DM or send me a DM if still looking. It’s the same scam essentially. It’s a big problem and this scam has exploded in the last 6 months. Very frustrating!

Boy let me tell you. I am a reseller, I do this for a LIVING. And a scammer got me for 120 bucks on FB. I THOUGHT I did my due diligence, but I failed one step on verifying. I did not REQUIRE a phone call to a legit business. Lesson learned. The scammers are getting better and better.

Huge problem. I admin a couple of auto enthusiast groups on Facebook and we have had to ban ALL sales because scams are so common. We've had several members scammed by various means. Fake product sales, etc. The most insidious are the ones that watch for deals that were negotiated publicly in the comments and respond using a fake account of the same name as the seller, to try to get the buyer to send the money to the wrong person. They'll send a PM from the cloned account asking for payment to a particular non-Paypal cash service like Venmo or cashapp, etc. If the person says they already paid, they'll respond and say that the payment failed and shows as reversed, and even provide a doctored screenshot showing the reversed payment on paypal, and say that their paypal is "having issues". They then tell the buyer that since it was reversed, it will take 3-4 days for the credit to show up, but to re-send the payment to the different service so they can go ahead and ship the item. It sounds complicated, but we've had several people fall for it. We have sticky posts telling people NOT to buy from anyone on the groups that they don't know personally, but people always think they're not going to get scammed and fall for these things. What's most annoying is even though on one of these groups, sales have been banned for at least three years, we regularly get long-time members and new members both ignoring the rules, ignoring the sticky posts, etc, and posting items or cars for sale, then getting furious when their posts are deleted. That and some other issues I'm honestly ready to pull the delete plug on groups. /soapbox off.

@@AlvinBrinson yeah exactly. I constantly remind people only to buy local and if you send someone money expect to get scammed. Combined over 25k members in the 3 groups and it’s been ok. Mostly these fake accounts have very little history and almost always use a stolen picture of a family to look trustworthy. Thankfully admin assist has improved and I have been able to catch 95% of the scammers joining and or commenting. It’s possible to continue to move forward without closing the group but it will take some time time and setup actions in admin assist!

I'm a Moderator in my towns Facebook group and admin in a barter and trade group and I'm always having to watch out and warn people of scammers, I usually catch them before they join but they are getting crafty and bold lately especially on Facebook since Facebook flat refuses to do anything at all to protect their users from scams and scammers....

The problem is running them down! The up address is masked, the money moves thru a ton of people and places in 24 hours or it’s set up on account the us has no jurisdiction over! That and there are so many scammers that for every one that is busted 10 more pop up! The other thing is there is not usually any money recovered, so we as tax payers foot the full bill for crap tons of man hours and it dead ends or they have a name but he’s in a country with no extradition! You may get a money mule or a middle man locked up stateside for 5 years but boss man just hires 3 more!

The real solution is for there be a system that can actually verify accounts that are set up for sellers and buyers! For instance, Facebook marketplace allows you to set up a profile with no pictures or friends or any factual information! That’s how they are able to list items and how they scam sellers as well! You report the account and it gets removed but they just open a new one same day using fake information or hacked accounts! Reddit won’t allow you to post on a lot of subs until you’ve interacted in the community and verified information, so as to try to make sure that accounts are authentic and there is a real person! Why can’t these other sites do something similar? Why can’t Facebook Marketplace be restricted to verified accounts that have a proven ( reviewed by a person ) user history! Maybe allow them to purchase items under a set dollar amount or require bank verification or PayPal verification when account is set up and not just that said account is real but that said account matches information and has been open in good standing for more than 90 days! Furthermore report all accounts that violate to cybercrime devision and wait for a response b4 banning them so not to tip them off!

I'm a FedEx driver, and I know a few people on my route that have been victims of these scams. I have been trying to figure out how they work the tracking numbers, it's always an item that is delivered to a house that is exactly a mile away.

Mercari should enforce making sellers include signature confirmation on high value items. I recently sold something on ebay for around $900 and eBay automatically added signature confirmation to the USPS Priority label.

I partly agree. Im a seller on mercari, and I had a unusual experience including a signature confirmation on an expensive item I shipped to someone. They went completely nuts on me. Ranting about I cant be home to sign!! I live 30 miles from the post office! How could you do this to me!! They left nasty comments. I've had it happen several years ago when I spotted a advanced Robot vacuum with the Lidar room mapping for like 69 bucks shipped. I figured it had to be a scam but if it was real it'd be a smokin deal and worth the gamble if it showed up. I got a international tracking number and followed it to New Jersey then across the united states. Got a notification it had been delivered at my mailbox. I had a camera on my front driveway and nothing was delivered etc. I turned it in to ebay and after less than a few days they refunded my money and killed the account. Even at 70 a pop he must have made decent money for the ones that didn't get stopped from paying him. People used to sell positive feedback for electronic only auctions where they'd sell a book or picture for 50 cents and give positive feedback just for getting paid some tiny amount. Got taken for one of those for 120 bucks about 10 years ago. Some of the buyers had bought thousands of dollars worth of gear from that guy and he disappeared as soon as he got his money orders. That was the other part of the scam, I don't know why my PayPal doesn't work, just send me a money order and I will ship it to you when it gets here...

I've ordered some shoes that became this scam. The post office told me the same thing, but then I asked them if the package was the right size for a pair of shoes. He laughed and said it was just a postcard. The package size is the evidence I used to get a full refund.

Mercari LOVES to say a seller has “insufficiently packaged” an item if it breaks in the mail. They do NOT honor the package protection for sellers. They have the buyer ship back whatever it is, either broken, or the wrong item (scam) and you’re out your item and the money.

If PayPal fails, I go straight to credit card or bank. It works. Just submit to them your strongest proof, in this case it’s the usps who confirmed it to you. I also have a camera on my front door or mailbox to prove nothing arrives at their claimed time.

Happened to me, it was for something cheap, like $20, but fought it till the end, for the principle of it. USPS showed me a letter (I had to take a picture, which I sent to eBay)with the actual delivery address (likely before this format was created). The USPS lady asked me if I was going to go to the delivery address and I told her, no, this was a scam, they likely had no idea they were being used.

I had the same thing happen to me. My very first purchase on Mercari. Bought a Sony camera. The price was too good to be true and I was blinded by it so I grabbed it up. I had it shipped to my office address. Saw the tracking that it was delivered. Asked at the front desk and no package. Luckily the scammer was stupid and used an address that was also part of the company I work for. Actually a building across the street. It didn't have my name on it but I marched the tracking number. They sent me a roll of elastic. I still have it. I sent pics of that and the packaging with the tracking number to Mercari and had my money back within an hour. I got lucky. I still have the roll of elastic for posterity.

Well, today I got an item that was clearly damaged, I sent eight pictures, and they denied my claim to send it back, and their "buyer protection" didn't refund my money. I'm SHOCKED. They had the nerve to say that the buyer "fulfilled their obligation" (by sending me a leaking/rancid bottle of perfume), and that they "knew this wasn't the outcome I wanted". I'm DONE. What good is buyer protection if you send them pictures of a broken item and they are like too bad, you are just out the money. They also didn't allow me to leave a REVIEW for the seller. I used to sing Mercari's praises, no more.

This has happened to me two times. The way I was able to get my money back is by showing mercari the weight of the actual item delivered. Call the post office and have them give you a paper showing the actual weight of the item delivered on the fake tracking number. It’s always 4oz or less. If you ordered anything important, it usually weighs way more than 4oz. Mercari can’t arugue against that.

As a postal worker i can tell you that there are lots of scams out there; clever and simple too. Im not going to mention how since i dont wanna give anybody any ideas. Even amazon has its share of scammers. I would suggest never buying something from an individual thats really pricey and you cant meet them face to face. Would you buy a new car online because its half off? People really fall into the trap of online shopping because of the ease of clicking without thinking.

I think for Mercari you’re supposed to open the dispute with them first. Typically I’ll go through them, then when there’s issues I’ll go to PayPal but regardless that sucks. Seems uniquely problematic with those headphones too (found so many listings with blank accounts)

This happened to me, they doctor the shipping label. So they set it all up like it’s legit. Use your address and the correct weights. They then take the label and change it so it goes to a different address. Then as you describe they send out a letter with junk. Then shows delivered. What I did was get a formal letter from the local post office and appeal PayPal and I had to plead with the rep on the fourth attempt they believed me. I then doxxed the dude that scammed me. Found he had a criminal record. Turned it in to the usps inspectors. Ask his online stores are offline now and his social media posting has stopped…

Facebook is getting really bad with scammers too. I run a Classic Mopar group and I get tons of requests with people commenting Message me or PM me. I can't tell you how many fake accounts and scammers I block everyday. I wish they would do something about it.

USPS pings an exact GPS coordinate when they scan the package as delivered so they know EXACTLY where a package is taken to. FedEx attaches a picture of the item sitting on the porch they delivered it to.......whether it's the correct porch or not.

Thank you, so much, for posting this. This morning (!) I searched for a Bose Aviation A20 headset ad bought a used headset for roughly $400. Then, I got nervous and googled Mercari and found your video! Holy smokes! Mercari is still allowing the listings to be posted. It was everything you mentioned. I immediately called my CC company and had them flag the transaction. Then, I sent a cancel request to Mercari. They just verified it was canceled. Had they not canceled it, I would have waited for the tracking number and then called USPS to look for the package at the shipping point and/or while in transit. I imagine, if a scam label was created and sent to me, I would have been able to send it to the USPS before it made it to delivery so the Postmaster could either hold/inspect or deliver the package to the intended address and ask the receiver if they knew anything about it. The same thing happened to me. I bought a $200 lego set, but the cheap junk came to my house. I told Mercari about it, and they refunded me with no other proof in a day or two. I have bought other cheaper vintage toys from Mercari with no problems.

Had this happen to me about a year ago and didn't realize what actually happened. Had a very unique car part that was supposedly delivered but never showed up. We're in a very rural area and I know all the neighbors for miles around. Fedex wouldn't do squat because they said they delivered it. Ebay eventually compensated me under the assumption that it was "stolen" even though I was out looking for the package within 10 minutes of receiving the delivery notification. I'm pretty sure this scam was really going on.

they've got someone on the inside to give them tracking numbers they can use for this. you'd have to have direct access to the overall list to be able to get a constant stream of valid numbers and not have to constantly send out fake packages. sounds like usps (or other if they're doing like the ups/fedex handoff stuff) may need to do some internal investigation.

I had a similar thing happend to me where the site found a USPS label from the same zip code and used that to get the delivery confirmation. I called PayPal and explained what happened and they gave me my money back. File again with PayPal, call them on the phone and explain to a representative. You can also get a copy confirmation of the address that the tracking number actually went to and provide that to PayPal.

Yep I had an eBay return buyer shipped index cards to a nearby school using the tracking number from the label I provided but used a fake label with a different address. eBay saw it was delivered and took the money from me and refunded them. Took me a month to figure all this out and get evidence from the post office to get my $ back.

The post office can provide GPS location though -- I think. I know every package with delivery confirmation the GPS location of where the carrier delivered the item is recorded. The reason I know is because the carrier left one of my packages in a strange place and I couldn't even find it. I went to the post office and they asked the carrier where he left it after their GPS showed he was indeed at my house when he scanned the package. I have no idea why he put it there. Apparently the scammers know the PayPal rules too, since items over $500 require an actual signature.

Only difference between you and me was mine was with an eBay return not purchase. So I lost the item (Google Pixel 7 Pro) and the money since they did a fake return doing this. I'm guessing since eBay denied my case 3 times the buyer still got his money back and eBay took the loss. I watched the account for a bit and it finally was closed about a month after I got my money back. Looks like it was used after they scammed me once or twice so guess ebay finally caught on.

I had this happen on a cheap item on Amazon a few months back. They basically shipped something to the same zip code, and like you said a different P.O. Box that was also taking a delivery the same day. The post office had no idea if it was my item but confirmed something bearing that tracking number was delivered that day to a different box. Amazon credited my money back after a short phone battle.

There are so many scams out there, one way to help avoid is looking at when they joined and if they have any history. Offer up is another site to watch out for scams. Sometimes if it's too good to be true keep away unless there's plenty of background on the seller. I used to fly a Cessna 150 many years ago but never regrettably finished getting my license. Its the 'Free shipping' that enables them to use any tracking number. Mercari gives sellers the shipping label after the buyer pays for the shipping cost. The only reason to pay for it yourself as a seller is Media Mail or a stamped envelope, which they don't offer as a shipping option.

Mecari, for the most part, has been decent. Post delivery is always off track by 2-3 days for the 3 day max survey. People aren't mailing in a proper time frame. Had one lady scream at me because I complained about the packaging. The product/1/2 maniquin was hanging out of the box! When delivered. Took photos & sent to Mecari as this lady accused me of ruining her "perfect rating". She ruined it by not tapeing the box correctly & securely. No tracking number either. Then the ridiculous shipping fee SHE, had chosen, not Mecari. Mecari banned her due to her threatening messages & language to me. I blocked her too.

A friend of mine actually went to Boston to look at a car and the buyer wouldn't let him see it. Nearly got burnt by eBay, but wasted a bunch of time and some money traveling. He told me about it on Monday and after 10 mins of searching, I could see it was a scam. The same car was listed all over the place for 6 months. It was probably junked long ago and scrapped.

I had the exact same thing happen to me about six months ago on eBay, and the merchant was in New Jersey. I got the data from the post office and of course it was delivered to someone else which they wouldn't reveal. I contacted the seller directly and he said he would have my item to me in an hour or two. It was a Sunday evening, and I'm like, what? The item was on my doorstep within a few hours. I don't know how he did that, but that is insane. The item was only around ten bucks. I'm still totally baffled by that.

Sounds like your situation was slightly different, maybe a genuine case of they made a mistake and sent it to the wrong address. Maybe the seller by chance lived close to you and figured he'd just do you a favor and drop it off.

This type of thing happened to me. PayPal didn't believe me, believed the "seller" that was newer to selling and not me that has used PayPal for over 10 yrs!! I had to escalate this and complain when PayPal still sided with the scam seller. So I kept complaining and they finally gave me my refund. Crazy! Keep complaining JR.

@@WatchJRGo that's how I was with ebay. 12 years 100% positive feedback never had a case against me. Other account was 2 months old and eBay sided with them over a delivery scan. On top of that they sent the fake package back from an entirely different state then where I shipped the item.

I've used yahoo japan, mercari, ebay, forums etc and so far i've not been scammed. They key thing is always always "buy the seller" make sure they have stellar feedback or respond to additional questions before purchase. One I like to do on poor listings is to ask for more pictures, proves ownership of the product and an indication of response time.

Zero feedback is a huge red flag. I always assume the person has no experience shipping things or that it’s a scam even on eBay. Also, that price was too be good for a reason. It’s always good to send the seller a message with a question or 2 or even ask for a pic of the item with a specific closeup request to see if they actually possess it. A scammer will never FaceTime to display the item either.

Sorry that happened to you, but at least it was only money? I got my medication stolen by an actual UPS driver? Yeah, the driver took my medication on it's way to my house, and UPS acted like I received it and was a common criminal? Therefore was unable to receive my meds from out of state anymore? Had to spend $400 for a flight over a 1,000 miles away now, each month, plus the same amount for the meds instead of having them delivered to me every 3 months? Just remember, it could always be worse, and be thankful what happened to me, never happens to anyone else?

If they truly did that, then if you opened up usps informed delivery your package would have never shown up in your packages to be delivered. I was able to figure out I was scammed on eBay in a couple days when they sent me the tracking number and it shown it was in transit, but nothing on my informed delivery. I screenshot my informed delivery, and sent it to the seller and said I said i think you sent it to the wrong address. No response. I contacted eBay, showed them my informed delivery and the tracking number I was given. They said I was being scammed because the addresses were completely different. I did get a refund but it took almost a month because the eBay seller was putting up a fight.

Mercari is a total scam. I made a purchase and seller sent me the wrong item. I contacted them right away and they promised to send the correct item right out. I never received it and contacted Mercari. Their answer was because I did not raise a complaint in 72 hours they cannot refund me. They even auto rated my purchase without my consent. So I got ripped off and buyer got a 5 star rating for doing it. Stay away.

@@jstpog You must be one of the sellers. What is there to disagree with ? I am telling you exactly what happened and have the correspondence from the seller and Mercari to prove it,. Look up their policy yourself. You only have 72 hours from delivery date to report a issue. If you do not your case is closed and Mercari will auto rate them 5 stars on your behalf and will tell you nothing they can do to refund your money. I got cheated out of 70.00 because the seller sent me the wrong item. They asked for the opportunity to make it right and stated would send the correct item right out. They never did and waiting for fed x ground that never came took me outside the 72 hour window. I believe the seller scammed me and used the policy to their advantage. Because I never reported an issue Mercari , after 72 hours they auto rated my purchase five stars. So that means Mercari has sellers with 5 star ratings that may have ripped people off and you are buying from them not knowing,

I bought a 99 dollar tool set off ebay, during covid got a envelope with face mask never got the kit finally opened a claim I then realized tracking was the same as the face mask I got in mail but never ordered, paypal wouldn't give money back as sell provided tracking that showed delivered, no matter who I talked too

Mail fraud is a federal offense. The problem is on small stuff not enough agents to do anything plus most get slaps on the wrist. Viligilantes are needed for sure to curve this criminal actions.
