Something that's very interesting to me as a watcher of the Dune movies yet also as an audience to my husband's musings (who's read the books) that I have learned (and subsequently fathom many watchers don't understand yet) is that Paul Atreides is not a moral highground character - he's not quite a villain in the series but he does veer into that territory. Dune part One presents Paul and Jessica and the like as our protagonists, to be liked and sided with; turns out they are not so unreprehensible characters. It's a very complicated universe Herbert created, sometimes I wonder how in the shit he had time to think up the things he thought up. I wonder if he had the same 24 hours a day as I have now because sometimes I can't think about heating up a hot pocket.

When he was writing Dune he was consuming Psilocybin mushrooms at the time. So you can put two and two together with that!

I like that line in the pinned comment: “swallowed by the sands.” Believe it or not, getting swallowed by a sandworm is one of my _Dune_ dreams, even though I haven’t seen any of the movies or read the novels.

My only criticism of the video is the title card that was spelled wrong. It is "Muad' Dib", not "Mua'Dib". The maud'dib, the kangaroo mouse, is seen briefly in the first film. Muad' Dib, the teacher of boys. Wise in the ways of the desert. Otherwise, this was an excellent primer that teases the next film while giving a solid background to the Universe.

Not to be rude, but this definitely was not a timeline of the Dune universe, not even of the original Frank Herbert novels. This was an explanation of all the different factions etc., but not a timeline. If this had been a timeline of the Frank Herbert novels as stated at the beginning of the video then I would have expected the following overall story beats at the least: the butlerian jihad, the war between Harkonen and Atreides, the Harkonen plot to assasinate Leto, Jessica and Paul Atreides, Paul's and Jessica's joining the Fremen, Jeccisa becoming a Reverend Mother and the consequences for her unborn daughter, Paul taking the Elixir of Life and becoming the Kwisatch Haderach, the war against Harkonnen and Corino, Paul becoming the next emperor and the jihad that followed, Paul's death and the rise of Ghanima and Leto II, Leto becoming the God Emperor of Dune, the great Scattering after Leto's death, etc., etc. (don't remember the last couple of books and where Frank stopped and Brian continued, so I'll leave it at this) Only the first few were mentioned. If anything this was some information for people unfamiliar with the background of Dune to prepare them for the second movie.

Kwisatz Haderrach is mispronounced Hebrew expression - Kfitzath Haderech or in English (loosely) Leap forward or a miraculous shortening of a long road

I think that the current Dune films are perhaps the best adaptation of the original novels to date. Frank Herbert was an acknowledged giant in the science fiction genre. I grew up reading his books from my early teenage years. To see the novels brought to life on the big screen is a singular experience. By that I mean, you read the book and imagine how it would look. Then someone else comes along and gives it their interpretation. I have to say that this iteration, for me, most reflects what I saw in my own mind all those years ago; although, I don't understand the necessity for some of the changes that were made, like making Liet Kynes into a woman. Be that as it may, I am avidly looking forward to the Australian release on Feb 29.

Well, there was no mention that the Bene Gesserit had more than one iron in the fire (so to say) when it came to the Kwisatz Haderach. They had options other than Paul Atreides going as well.

The Corrino Empire doesn´t span the entire galaxy. The farthest places in the Dune universe are star systems like 200 light years from Earth. The Milky Way Galaxy is 100 thousand light years in diameter.
