+Millad Bahrami That's the thing though it didn't really. The original Metroid gave you the space to explore for sure but it was Super Metroid that gave you the tools that made that task so much more fun and rewarding like the insanely broken wall jump, the speed booster & the shine spark. And I'd actually personally argue that Metroid Zero Mission did an even better job by giving Samus the finest control of a protagonist I've ever had in any Metroidvania.
@RepleXTA9 жыл бұрын

+Adam Anouer I also think zero mission did a much better job. the original metroid in my opinion is pretty bad as a game but what it did well was lay the foundations for the genre. as you said "The original Metroid gave you the space to explore for sure but it was Super Metroid that gave you the tools that made that task so much more fun and rewarding" Super Metroid still didn't invent the genre it perfected it
@SheonEver9 жыл бұрын
+RepleXTA I've honestly never known why they're metroidvanias rather than metroid-like', because while I thoroughly enjoyed sotn I don't see what it added to the genre either; the rpg-style leveling element is not a prerequisite for metroidvanias, and aside from a sword over a gun that's really all that's different.

I agree with most of the list, but I think Super Metroid should have been number 1#. It was the first one that master the gameplay of metroidvania, a massive quantity of secrets, fantastic music, decent challenge and an awesome finally. The replayability in that game is huge thanks to sequence breaking and, speed runners and casuals players loved for that very reason. Symphony of the Night was not a challenging game, in fact is a joke for how hard the original Castlevania in the NES were and the many broken weapons that you can get with a little bit of effort. The second half of the game is very infamous of how unoriginal it is, just put everything outside down and called it a day. I love this game though besides those flaws. That's just me, though.

+Veranio Yeah, Symphony of the Night is a pretty great game, but it's broken as shit and I'm getting a bit exasperated when I keep hearing it called "The Best Castlevania Title Ever," "The Best Metroidvania Title Ever," "Maybe the Best Game of ALL TIME." THAT'S about where I start to smell bullshit.
@douglewis79469 жыл бұрын
***** I gotta admit that I actually didnt much carefor the movement in Super Metroid. But the reason the game is so great is because of HOW it plays on nostalgia. Assuming you came from the original NES Metroid, this game was explicitly designed to take your expectations and blow them sky high. Take for example, the intro level of the game. You get to the Metroid, only to have Ridley swoop in and attack you. And he's not just some stationary Bowser clone anymore. He's all over the place, and its like nothing youve seen before in this franchise. And the way it takes you through the remains of Brinstar to find a Morph Ball powerup you collected once before, but this time under surveilance by some mysterious entity. Now suddenly this familiar place is swarming with Space Pirates who are climbing up walls and blasting you with claw....lasers. Not something you expect in the beginning of the game. And it just keeps showing you how much it wants to blow your expectations apart every chance it gets from there. Like when you fight "Kraid," seemingly not too much larger than the last game, and then walk into the next room and...oh. Thats not what you expected. Or the fact the game has a semblance of in-game story, and I dont even need to tell you about Mother Brain. I might not call Super Metroid the BEST in the series, but its presentation value is THROUGH THE ROOF, and I say it would easily make Top 3 at least.
@Mijangox9 жыл бұрын
Symphony of the Night was the first "Metroidvania"; the term didn't exist before that game and this list wouldn't exist without it. Shut up.

We had Metroid (NES), Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest - as much as everyone woul like to forget that one, Legend of Zelda (not 2D, but definitely Metroidvania), Demon's Crest, Clash at Demonhead... Metroidvania was a thing long, long before SotN came onto the scene, and Konami sure as hell didnt perfect the formula either. But I guess Zeldatroid doesnt quite roll off the tounge too well, does it?

It just feels cheap to put the two obvious winners on the list; the genre is named after them, of course they're going to get the top spot.
@knucklesfan89 жыл бұрын
I really think Super Metroid should be number 1. I honestly think it's a better designed game. Symphony of the Nught's level design just felt downright sloppy at times to me. Yeah it had more and bigger stuff but that doesn't always mean better game. Also, I think super metroid does a better job making the items you do find feel useful, which is a huge part of metroidvania games. When I think of many items that are a little helpful, I think RPG (not that incorporating RPG elements is by default bad, but the huge over abundance of items in SOTN diminishes the excitement of when you actually do find one)
@DivisorOfZero9 жыл бұрын
+Mr. Brock Lee yeah but it has A lot more of actually exploring that you can do and it feels amazing to find an item have no idea what to do with it and then figure it out, and of course when it has a leveling system and weapon system some items are going to end up sucking but that makes all the good ones that much better to get when you find it. And don't get me wrong I love Super Metroid but I knew right from the start that Castlevania:SOTN was going to be number 1 because it has more playtime, more story, and a hell of a lot more secrets, not to mention the mind blowing twist the first time you play it. Super Metroid was a masterpiece but Castlevania:SOTN just had better technology to work with and did more, while keeping that same level of genius Super Metriod had. And to be honest I don't think the level design was sloppy at all, challenging yes but not sloppy.

I think Ori is EVEN better. I love the way it makes you feel so powerful. Like, most Metroidvania games are like; first power up: longer beam. But Ori is like: fuck that here's a wall jump, go wherever you want, kiddo. You go through a section and see a wall you can't pass, but you eventually loop back to it, and you're like, "Hells yea!" Hell, there are sections you CAN go to at any time, but they just have tough enemies. I think that WatchMojo didn't do the game justice, it's one of the best.
@fdavidgomes7 жыл бұрын
For me Ory was artistically beautiful, but it lacked on boss fights as well as an unlinear progression. That's why I think Castlevania SoTN is far better, and by the time it was way more interesting than Ory is today. I'm a heretic among the Castlevania community for holding Aria of Sorrow (the 3rd and final game on the GBA) as the best game in the series. While it was obviously technically inferior to Symphony and many would argue that Soma is so much less cool than Alucard that there's no point even comparing them, it made up for it in other ways. It was the first game to take the Castlevania setting somewhere new (into the FUTURE, years after Dracula has finally been destroyed for good, and Castlevania is sealed inside a freakin' LUNAR ECLIPSE), the soul system was absolutely *genius*, giving you even more customisation options beyond your weapon and armour, and the plot was simply the best in the series. Plus, while it may have been obviously technically weaker than Symphony, it was still easily the most gorgeous game on its entire system, with incredibly detailed sprites and animation. Put simply, while Symphony was fantastic, it still wasn't perfect (once the novelty wore off the upside-down castle was a drudge through areas you'd already seen before with no real objectives and the game balance was a mess). For what it was, Aria was perfect.

@jackalvonstone2508 жыл бұрын
AuroraxPhilic It's called that because it sounds better, not because more people thought Metroid was better.
@jrvbamafan17 жыл бұрын
Except metroid originated the style of finding items like that and going anywhere. Symphony of the night just copied it

Actually some people call it Castletroid, so it depends only on taste...

But Metroid started the formula in 1986. SotN came out 11 years later. To be honest, I don't understand why it gets credit at all. It's like calling the horror genre "Alone in the Dead Space"...
@nilspeters6436 жыл бұрын
Rai Sie If you think SotN was the first Castlevania game you are grossly mistaken. The first one came out in 1986, do your research.

If you made a list of good 2D platformers, would you not add a Mario game simply 'cause that started the concept?
@chrisp30828 жыл бұрын
+I'm Nori First off, Mario did not invent the platformer genre, it simply perfected it. People don't like the fact that metroid and castlevania were 1 and 2 were because they were the games that this genre was fucking named after. It's literally just making a top ten metroid/castlevania inspired games and putting metroid and castlevania at number one.
@sushiSlayr8 жыл бұрын
"Metroidvania" is different from Metroid/Castlevania-inspired games. Metroidvania is its own genre revolving around 2D gameplay in a large interconnected, that is essentially named after the two games, simply 'cause no one could come up with a clever term. What I'm saying is, you (and some people, apparently) are making a big deal over two games in particular 'cause of the name alone. You're missing the fact that they are two of the best examples of the genre, and that's really all a game needs to be on a list of good Metroidvania games. If platformers weren't called "platformers" ('cause it sure wasn't a real term back then), but rather "Donkey Kong" games or "Mario" games, or mix the two names together somehow, I'd still write off the original Donkey Kong as a great game in its genre.
@chrisp30828 жыл бұрын
I'm Nori You make a good point, but I feel like the reason it wasn't necessary for them to put both Super Metroid and Castlevania Symphony of the night is because unlike platformers, where a very large portion of those games deviate from the more popular Mario style games into their own kinds of games while keeping the platformer style, almost all metroidvania games derive from SM and CSOTN, and most of them don't do much to create their own sense of style with unique mechanics. They all follow the same formula, unlike platformers where all you need is a jump button and platforms and from there you can do whatever you want to make it special. With platformers, you have a wide variety of different types of them to make each special. Where with metroidvania, it's either super metroid, or Castlevania. Very rarely do you get Ori and the blind forest. So really, to make this statement shorter, metroidvania isn't called metroidvania because no one knew what to call it, but it's called that because most of them are either metroid are castlevania clones.
@sushiSlayr8 жыл бұрын
That's one way of putting it, and you make a pretty compelling argument. I can argue that games like Guacamelee have very unique twists in its gameplay, but one part of your statement is very true: every game either stems on one extreme or the other; one plays more like Metroid, while another plays like Castlevania, and don't really branch off too much to stick out. I guess the genre is about as much like an homage as a standalone genre, if not more than that.

First, I don't think Metroid or Castlevania are "Metroidvania" games. Metroid is Metroid and Castlevania is Castlevania. Second, if they are, as they were here, Super Metroid should be number 1! SotN didn't perfect it. Super Metroid was already perfect! Much better than Symphony of the Night. Super Metroid had multiple areas and environments. SotN had an upside-down mansion. Metroid didn't have to resort to just flipping the world to double the length of the game.

The genre Metroidvania does not imply any specific connection to Metroid or Castlevania. It's simply the only good name we have for that genre, which is defined by the gameplay elements introduced in Metroid. Metroidvania more refers to the elements present in Metroid than those in Castlevania. It's just a name that has stuck, unlike the similar concept of "Doom-clones". If someone can come up with a better catchy name, be my guest.
