You are not guilty of being the only person in the world to own an Iconaut. I bought one about 6 years ago and had it for a couple years before selling it. on. I think I had the black/grey dial. Like you my thought process was that this Tudor was seriously a one of a kind. No other watch from the Rolex or Tudor brand like it! I think I paid $2,200 for it and sold it for less. It always ran really well with no issues. I think it was the size and the wide bezel that made me sell. But no complaints. It was nice owning a true Icon.

I have to agree with you Austin, there is no one perfect watch that will give you everything. But some do come closer than others. Looking forward to the next video.

Oooh, glad to hear the Hydronaut is finally ready! Can't wait to see it and get your impressions of the new aesthetic! It'll be cool to see the gray dial in the Iconaut as well. The collection is expanding nicely! Or do you still not consider the Tudors part of your collection? Judging by how much you love functions, how rich in functions the Iconaut is, and how much you've worn it since October, I'm guessing the size is no longer an issue. Looking forward to the next video!

Thanks man! Yes, the Tudors are part of the collection, but certainly aren't on equal footing with the Rolex pieces. I still tend to view them as a slightly lesser sub-collection. But RSC servicing them has made me appreciate them a little more.

Austin and the Iconaut, a love story

Life shouldn't be that complicated:-)) All my watches are in the drawer and 100 $ Gshock does the job just fine. Watches are like collecting stamps or anything else. It is easy to go over the budget. It is nice to be passionate about watches and you are great in expressing this passion. My first watch I got hands on was at age seven when I stole my uncles gold watch and had to gave it back two hours later:-(( Some of the KZbinrs are not such a good influence which are trying to push their watches on the people who like watches but can not afford them. Perhaps you could touch this subject in a video? When you are looking for a mate, subconsciously are we looking for someone who has different qualities from ourselves in order to compensate in life.

Why does it feel like Austin could sell me an Iconaut
@andyt68193 жыл бұрын
Yup, the reason why we collect is cause there is no one watch for all occasions, but some do come close

Would be interesting to find out if you can the satisfaction with the Iconaut as a single watch person. Personally, I find everything is out of propotion in that watch

The Iconaut is more of the definitive watch, it may be strange but tells you what Tudor can do in getting serious to the watch game; but they just can’t shed off the Rolex shadow and unfortunately Heritage and Black bays are all what people want. Not gonna lie, I gave the Tudor Chrono S&G a hard look 👀

Hmm... we know that only Rolex gives Austin that “buzz”, so if he were to be looking for that one watch, I would think it would have to be a Rolex, not a Tudor. Austin’s 16710 seems to fit that one watch as it has date, GMT, and the rotating bezel for timing.... plus you can change bezel inserts and bracelets. The Iconaut offers a chronograph but no rotating bezel, so a bit of a trade off. I don’t get it.

Nice symmetry and I like the blue dial 20300, but if I had to choose I'd rather have a GMT function than a chronograph.

@@watchsymposium Are you going to go for the last generation Iconaut sword hands/black dial combo with RSC?
@watchsymposium3 жыл бұрын
I'm going for a the grey dial version of the dial that I have. I really like the red indices on it.

Yea, Iconaut is an odd ball and it’s functions make it versatile for a reasonable price. What’s not to like , it’s larger size and look replicates the larger Rolex’s. I prefer the Hydronaught .... only because the perfection of it appeal. Tudor vintage Crono’s are a little more stylish the big block etc...although price seemingly has both advantage and. disadvantages. So...Wear it in good health, it’s certainly very unique to say the least.

The sour grapes story is about hating what you can’t have, or more broadly about rationalizing (Austin’s favorite pastime 😉). I have to wonder if we’re doing that in reverse here. Does this watch represent another watch that’s less attainable... maybe because it doesn’t even exist. We all know Austin’s “one” watch would HAVE to be a Rolex. You recently reviewed a collection with a Tudor GMT and couldn’t find much positive to say about it even tho IMO it was the ONE watch the guy seemed to be truly enjoying as intended. You concluded that he should sell it and pay 13k for a preceramic Pepsi gmt. Hard to justify objectively except of course: Rolex is Rolex. That said I’m almost shocked to hear you’d even entertain the idea of this as your one watch. (...and I say all of that without stating the obvious: this thing is UGLY...imo).
@watchsymposium3 жыл бұрын
Well, I threw out the idea of getting rid of one or both of his beaters (the Tudor GMT and Steinhart GMT) in favor of what seemed to have been a grail for him (The GMT 2). But remember, I said he shouldn't do that, because both the Tudor and Steinhart were filling certain roles that a 13k watch couldn't. His collection was sizable, and I was talking him through a way to keep it around the same size, yet realize that GMT 2 that was clearly still on his mind.

beauty is in the eye of the beholder. i personally think the iconaut is retro-chic and gorgeous. i love the bulk and 70s style numbers on the bezel and the crazy mishmash of different color/size sub dials.
