My dad was an elder. He pointed out to me that there's a rule in the Shepherd book (didn't actually say the name of the book) when I was college age that there's really what I see as a cheat code: if you're in "full time service," (i.e. pioneering) and your meeting attendance isn't affected, you can pursue higher education. If they can point to, "well, he's pioneering," you can get away with it. I always thought that was pretty sleazy. As long as they get theirs and you're still doing it, they will overlook it. If you can't work a hundred hours a week and make all the meetings like a normal human can't, poor it is.
@Myke_thehuman3 ай бұрын
This would massively depend on who your elders are. I imagine there are many elders who would simply ignore that rule and look for a reason to disfellowship anyone that goes to college. I mean it's not like most witnesses know about that rule.

I was already starting to wake up, but looking back, it was the JW broadcasts (as well as the original songs, which I viscerally hated and wouldn't allow to be played around me), and specifically these clips that were a major linchpin in my journey out.

They don’t want the regular rank & file to go, but they have chosen ones that are allowed to go to college and be accepted to Bethel. There are so many adjectives I could use for this, but everyone should come up with their own because I think at first it affects our feelings and is an insult to our intelligence and kicks in our instinct to want to punch something. the culture of JW can be heavy with guilt, and sway a kid from feeling comfortable trying to venture out on their own if everyone else is discouraging them. They can be made to feel rebellious against god for even wanting it. Remember, JWs are discouraged from even having friendships outside of their religion, so if your congregation is disappointed in your decisions, it can hurt. If they turn their back on you or worse, disfellowship you, you are literally left with no one in your life. If it's all you've ever known that can be devastating. It's sad, but many stay in the religion simply because leaving is too difficult.

How is anyone supposed to trust that the current doctrine won't get changed? For example, what if the GB said that you can't have a blood transfusion, in any form, including albumen or other blood partials, and you died. But then, not too long after, they said it's a conscience matter. That doesn't bring you back, does it? Or, what if you disagree with a certain doctrine and make it known your opinion only to be disfellowshipped for your stance. But then, the GB changes the doctrine which agrees with the stance for which you were disfellowshipped? How is that fair or just? Will they apologize and say "just kidding"? If the "light gets brighter" how can anyone be sure that what they say is "TRUTH"?

If you want to understand the mind of JW leadership i suggest doing two things 1) read George Orwell's novel called "1984" and 2) watch Abbot &Costello do the "who's on first" baseball routine. Combine these two things together will give you the answers.

Technically Anthony is talking about adults here. They’re young adults, but they’re 18 and over, so wouldn’t the decision to go to college/university be theirs and not their parents? And it’s not very likely that the parents are footing the bill for college, since they probably have low paying/pt jobs, so the student would be using a scholarship or some other source of funding for their education. So he’s really using the parents to guilt trip their son/daughter not to attend college.

It's more nuanced than that. Depends on how influential one's parents are when you're growing up and get to 18 years old

Well when it comes to college, I can't exactly 100% blame them, for what they're saying. There are some bad parts about it, but saying that you shouldn't go to college at all, is not right especially who are capable of getting those jobs. Such as a doctor teacher or a lawyer, but colleges or colleges. So if you do plan to go to college, at least get your information, about the college you want to go to beforehand. So you at least know, what you're getting into.

and they have no problem using worldly people who went to college and are highly educated but came into the religion later on. Or sending Bethelites to college for particular reasons, like because they need lawyers. Also, I know MANY JWs that didn't go to college but own their own businesses and now hire many people from their Halls and have lots of money and homes and cars ... and those men just HAPPEN to be elders now. Very hypocritical

... With all the money spent on production, suits, 'kerchiefs, rings, other rings, tie pins and 12" thick acrylic desktops - could they not have 'hired' one staffer to wipe the oomska out of the corner of Morriss 3's mouth?

Yes. The only other GB who raised kids (step children) was Guy Pierce, who has been deceased for some years now.
