I bought tricolor sedum spurium succulent a few years ago and it has lasted me a looong time. I love them. Great for breaking down sharp edges in a garden. Recently been loving Piet Oudolf more, a fellow Dutch landscape architect whom I met at university and his work is stunning. He does monoculture so well and he loves plants that give architectural interest all year round and loves his perennials because some of them look amazing when dead. If you have the time look at his stuff for inspiration DeLadysigner :)

Seriously! You managed to make a game about simulating a zoo, become a landscaping garden simulation that any landscaping software we have on the market would only dream of. I imagine this garden having peafowls roaming around and turning it into an open enclosure. I could only imagine the peafowls fanning their feathers as the mid-day sun gloriously sitting above their majestic colourful feathers. And the migration garden leading to a flamingo sanctuary. Imagine a billionaire owning a sanctuary like this in real life, while the guests are having tea and scones in front of the estate, guests looking over the migration garden would have an amazing view of the flamingos taking flight on the horizon and peacocks roaming around freely as if they're the boss of the sanctuary. Ahh...I'd make this a reality if I were a billionaire tycoon.

I think the specimen trees work because at the angle you were filming at, they create two "structures" with the iron water lilies: the red-orange of the trees and the lilies are close enough in hue, saturation, and proximity to visually "lump" together (though in a more pleasant way than the word "lump" usually suggests). These two larger splashes of orange rest almost exactly on the one-third and two-thirds points of the garden, when viewed from the wood path between the seedum gardens. It might not follow the Rule of Thirds, exactly, but it certainly follows the Golden Ratio.

I love this series! It makes me want to visit my local botanical garden honestly. For when you need sculptures in the future, I recommend looking at Dale Chihuly's blown glass sculptures as inspiration. The Missouri botanical garden has a few of his works and it's very fitting. The blown glass style feels like flower bulbs at times. Idunno how possible it would be in PlanZoo though.

Not only your channel is incredible, you just made me discover Big Dreams Small Spaces and now I dream of the day I will have my own house and garden, but saddly, I'll have to wait in my small appartement.... But back to your video. To told the truth, first I tought that the colorful flowers sculptures looked better, but once you finished your color palette, it's true that the more rusty vibe was a better idea. And I just love your philosophie of creating point of interest and interactivity. But now I'm curious : with the trees and the bigger slope and the sculptures, what does it look like from the central domaine and mirror fountain, like you were talking about in the start of the video ?

From the grand channel at the base of the estate? It's completely disappeared! The way the whole thing is terraced you can't see much of anything - which allows for discovery of the garden as you traverse through it at human scale. Thanks for the lovely comment!

I'm quite late to the party, but catching up now - really enjoying this series, and your latest creations across current series. I was looking if someone had mentioned this already, and someone did! I had the same thought when you questioned the odds with the two trees. It would not have worked the way it does now with the waterlily sculptures, if they weren't colored that rusty hue. Well, it all depends on color and spacing. Also the shape of each sculpture is close enough to the tree shape for them to be visually grouped, or noted as something cohesive in combination with it's surroundings. Yet it frames the sculptures nicely and makes them stand out. Apart from this selfish comment to make me feel better, I mostly want to use this as an excuse to say that I really love what you are doing here. I don't comment often, which means nothing, but I can say that I truly enjoy your latest videos. You really can tell that you love it, and it's coming across. Also I like that you explain the "why" of everything, actually taking the time to elaborate. I mean, I feel like you are always pretty (over)aware of all your builds - leading to a lot of trial and error (thus leading to be cream of the crop) - but, I dunno, maybe because you take your time or whatever. Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED talk - I'm gonna watch some more. Keep killing your darlings, and all the best!
@ilyxr5 жыл бұрын
Hahaha, I really enjoyed that TEDTalk. Yeah I think that is something people sometimes forget - in the abstract, colors can be referenced even if the plant material isn't the same. It's about knowing the design rules and choosing whether or not to follow them, hahaha.
@robinsommer5 жыл бұрын
@@ilyxr I think it's also just something we adapted from art history, and film and such. How they had to play with contrast etc. The "rule of thirds" comes mainly from 2d media composition, but in general odd numbers are interesting to us mere symmetrical human. Maybe also because even amounts have no visible middle. In the end it's all expression and there are no rules. I mean, some art is AWFUL to look at - but that might just be the point. Ugh, who am I.. It's to late. I'm sorry. Thanks for staying for the TED talk encore. Good night.

Awesome job! I watch just about all of the you tubers and you have taught me the most about terrain and path-taming, realistic planting, design awareness and scale. You must have lots of patience. Why didn't Frontier work on the path system since Planco? Why bring that problem to the next franchise? It's not like they didn't know that we all hate it. I complain but I am still hooked on them both. Can't wait for the next episode.
@ilyxr5 жыл бұрын
It's complicated - but from what I gather, PlanZoo's development started directly after PlanCo's release - meaning that a lot of the programming and structure had been done already, but updates to Co were not in sync with the development team for Zoo. Therefore they didn't really improve on a lot of issues that Co faced as well. Soooo paths are the way they are.

@ilyxr5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, i prefer a reasonably direct path, until elevation is a factor. Then you've got the challenge of path wrangling which results in a slightly indirect path, haha. Direct in that instance is stairs, but then you have the problem of lacking inclusion for people who are not bipedal. From there, budget is factored...as to move people vertically it's either an elevator or escalator. When budget is a thing, it becomes more likely to path wrangle a slope, thus losing the directness of the path.

Hey, Hi Mike, pretty much new subscriber of you. I love your build and pretty pump you're joining Kaoli Zoo. And I just wanna know what your insight or what can you say to some of the Botanical Garden in my country the Philippines. I basically knew 3 garden. First is La Union Botanical nd Zoological Garden in San Fernando, La Union, Philippines, a natural garden with a serene Japanese setting, an herbal wheel garden, an arid paradise and more theme gardens - a romantic hideaway or a classical landscape. Second is Baguio Botanical Garden in Baguio, Philippines is one of the green parks of the City of Pines "where nothing much happens". And I might add that Baguio is known to be the flower capital of the Philippines because of the beautiful flower that comes from the city. And Lastly and probably my fave is Terrazas de Flores Botanical Garden in Cebu, Philippines, a flower garden where local flowers are meticulously arranged on a mountain slope to form flower terraces. It has over 120 species of plants and flowers, also flaunting other beautiful art and fascinating poetry. Just wanna share some Botanical Garden in our country, although it might not as good as the garden in your country or other foreign country but i find then pretty 👍☺️
