I had never heard of water glassing eggs. It is such a neat thing to watch and learn about. I’m 78 years old and I am learning a lot from watching your videos. Thank you and they are so enjoyable to watch. God bless you and your family.

Just found this, never heard of this before, just going into late autum here down under and our hens have stopped laying except for the occasional one. We give a lot of eggs to family, neighbours and take excess to church and then buy eggs during winter so will have to see if pickling lime is available here and have a go next spring. Food starage is regaining popularity here again. When I was growing up (72) it was a big thing but then a lot of mums started working and it went out of favour mostly. A lot of young families are looking to go off gridand become more self-sufficient. I freeze a lot and have preserved a lot in the past but just the 2 of us now after 30years of fostering over 70children plus our own 2special gifts from God. Always wanted 7 children but God intervened and then began sending children in need and gave us 10 fold of what we were thinking. We had from newborn through 18 and some with profound disabilities, loved them all, mostly returned to families after interventions, which is so satisfying. Blessings to you all as you progress on your journey of empowering others.💞

Helen what a blessing you've been to so many! I think your life story would make an awesome book and I'm flattered that you would watch our family's channel. Thank you so much! Yes, water glassing eggs has kept me from having to buy eggs through the winter for the past 3 years. I'm so glad to have found it and hope you have success with it as well! :)

Helen, thank you so much for fostering children. 🙏 I adopted both of my kids after fostering them and now work as a child advocate for kids in DCF custody who have been abused, neglected, or abandoned. There is such a need for foster homes.

Your videos are the most interesting videos out there. I grew up on a dairy farm in Minnesota. We also had lots of chickens and hogs. Had a huge garden. We lived like your family being mostly self sufficient. Mom always made bread. We would dip a slice into cream and put mashed strawberries on top of that. It was like a dessert. I have a bad allergy to anything with a fragrance in it, so I make my own hand soap, laundry soap, dishwasher soap tabs, all cleaning products. Watching your videos has inspired me to do more baking and cooking. I had never heard of water glassing eggs. Interesting. I started using egg alternatives when baking and can't tell the difference, like applesauce or protein powder mixed with a little water or plain yogurt. Keep up the good work. Glad your family decided to do videos.

I had never heard of this until a few years back when I was watching a Prepper Video. It was amazing to me. She had hers in a glass jar…..big jar. When I say Prepper I mean not just a homesteader but she worked herself to death and it seemed to me to be pointless some of the things she did the hard way when some things could have made her life a little easier. Don’t know what became of her but the last unheard she was no longer prepping. Anyway, thanks for sharing this excellent way to have fresh eggs year round. Do you ever wonder by whom and how these amazing methods were discovered ? What is the old saying?? Necessity is the mother of invention. I haven’t slept since a nap yesterday afternoon and my brain, such as it is , is in a fog so this may not be a direct quote. Would appreciate prayers for my sleep disorder as well as the illnesses I live with daily. Love to you all from my beautiful mountainous region of East Tennessee. 🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️❤️🥰🥰

I have been using this method of preserving eggs for the past two years. Our most recent batch is 8 months old and are still very good tasting. I especially love using them for egg bakes. I was very apprehensive initially and waited about 5 years before I had the courage to try it. Now I'm hooked!

Thanks for taking the time to comment, Laurie! Yeah, I had that apprehension too! Taking an almost 1 year old egg out of a bucket and eating it, just sounded sketchy. It really does work though! I'm so glad to have found this method of preservation as it's really saved us money over the winter. :)

Lovely video, very informative. When you start using the eggs toward the end of the year…do you ‘float’ the eggs to make sure they are good?
@ozarkfamilyhomestead
@ozarkfamilyhomestead Жыл бұрын
No, the only time we float eggs is when we are surprised to find a big nest of eggs and we don't know how old they are! When getting ready to use the eggs, I do crack each individual one in a bowl before adding it to the rest of the food just in case there's something wrong with it. :)

@amycrowe8243
@amycrowe8243 11 ай бұрын
How long do you collect and keep the eggs until you have enough to waterglass 6 dozen or do you have quite a few chickens and get that many eggs within just a few day? Pickled lime solution? Or did you say lye?
@ozarkfamilyhomestead
@ozarkfamilyhomestead 11 ай бұрын
Hi Amy! In the springtime we can easily get 2 dozen a day from our chickens, so it doesn't take too long to fill up a bucket! However, it's also very easy to put in a few eggs each day until the bucket is full. Yes, the white powder that I'm using in the video is called pickling lime and it's used in canning. The official name, though, is calcium hydroxide. :)

(from Shawn) Lisa, I have answered the question about guns several times. You asked this question on the 200 Bean Plants video comments and I answered it on July 2. You also asked this question in the Large Family Day in the Life video comments and I responded on July 3. We have also responded to your question on the past two livestreams. If you go to the July 3 livestream (Come See Us), you will find my response at 48:23 of that video . If you go to the July 9 livestream (I'm Missing Children), you will find my response at 1:22:50 of that video. Please review those responses, especially the video livestream for a detailed explanation. In yesterday's livestream, I gave the examples of both bear and mountain lions on our property as well as the threat of criminals which we would be on our own to deal with due to the remote location of our property. I hope those responses are adequate and clearly explain our reasoning behind carrying guns.

So can you "wipe" not scrub the eggs clean? I dont have chickens so i have to buy mine from friends. But i dont get many that are perfectly clean. Ive heard if you wipe them clean its fine.... meaning no actual washing the eggs.
@ozarkfamilyhomestead
@ozarkfamilyhomestead Жыл бұрын
I would think it would be ok if you were able to brush something off with a slight touch of your fingers, but I think it would be too much if you had to use a fingernail to scratch something off. These eggs should be as clean as you can possibly get them without resorting to washing or scrubbing. Hope that helps and I'd love to hear back if you're able to water glass some eggs in the future! :)

can you water glass duck eggs?
@ozarkfamilyhomestead
@ozarkfamilyhomestead Жыл бұрын
Colleen, I think you might be able to IF you could get enough duck eggs that aren't muddy or messy. Ducks are notorious for getting their eggs filthy and you cannot waterglass dirty eggs. They must be pristine and super-clean. I would love to hear if someone tries it out. :)
