Wish someone, maybe myself, could breed Gould's monitors like they once did in the 1980's. Waters are awesome but too large for most enthusiasts, and I don't care too much for the expensive dwarfs or odatria.

Nice Monitors. I agree, that captive bred provides a much greater success rate when it comes a calmer pet, easier to tame, and interact with. I personally have never purchased a CBB, do to price point. I can say this through my personal experience, I currently have two, both farm bred, one is a 3 year old Male, still at moments behaves anxious and nervous however is not aggressive. I also have a baby that is calm and sweet. I had a nice Male years ago that passed away at 13 years old. He was puppy dog tame and he wasn't a CBB. This is the up side and not common when having wild caught or Farm raised. The bad side in the past lost 2 babies. They both died withing 2 weeks of recieving them. So in conclusion, I would recommend spending the extra money, buy CB. The question for many is how much to spend, and this all depends on personal finances, budget, and desires. Great job Kevin on bringing alot of joy and understanding to an awesome Majestic lizard for many to own. Just too pricey for me. Maybe could stretch to $500,

Water monitor so cheap in Indonesia because i can found it in my backyard. And sometimes they go to your house for looking cool place and finish their sheding. Varanus indicus, melinus, nebulus(cloudedmonitor) appendix 1 or 2 in here. But thanks for show us how to deal with this great reptile. I make my design cage from u video, in here baby monitor live in 40cm-60cm aquarium or a plastic box with air hole, cruel.

you get what you pay for and some people will never understand that thought process. if its worth having its not going to be cheap and when it comes to reptiles your paying for a clean bloodline and the care/attention that was taken for the animal before you take possession of it.

I would pay twice what you quote for one of your water monitors Kevin. If only you could ship to Ireland. I could get a Wc or Cf over here but i know the problems that come with that, having bought imported snakes a few times. It really is more hassle than its worth...

AlbertoMuse YES THEY SHOULD. I couldnt agree more. So many of the people buying monitors these days havent got the slightest clue what they are getting themselves into. Ive had to start having disclaimers on my youtube videos because morons kept buying Niles (because they are TOO cheap) after seeing my 6ft nile. Ive already had a few of my subscribers buy Niles and fail miserably. Atleast 3 of the niles bought by my subscribers are already abandoned. I warned every single one of them not to get a Nile. Its so bad that I dont even want to post videos of my nile anymore if this is whats going to keep happening. My Nile is very docile, but even docile Niles are far too expensive in the long run, and far too much effort, for the average reptile keeper.

Its too bad the government has set all of these limitations on where we can own these little guys. I would love to own one! I have a 120 lb dog who roams the street with me, and that's fine, but I can't own one of these gems. That dragon is way more friendly than my cujo, lol.

joseradiation I can understand what you are saying. I live in Florida and we have restrictions like crazy for some reptiles. But there are good reasons why we do. There are a lot of reptiles running lose that are bad for the economy system. While it's not usually the animals fault. It's doing what it should be. It's very irresponsible owners faults because they will buy a snake like a python or a lizard like a tegu or monitor and not learn before what they are getting themselves evolved with and end up releasing them or the animal escapes. In South Florida you can run across monitors and tegus and snakes at anytime. That's why the Florida Fish and Wildlife Department a lot of times will capture and destroy the animals. Which is really sad because the animals never asked to be put into the situation.

Some water monitor species are endemic in Indonesia and Philippines that's why they are cheap...but sadly some keep them as pets, but the rest, mostly in rural places, they slaughter it and Eat it, how cruel...

I bout a wild caught Sumatran import from Colorado reptiles, he is extremely tame and loving, from the day I purchased him I got lucky, I watched a lot of your videos and agree with you on the CBB monitors,but I wouldn't rule out wild imports for experienced breeders or keepers, I could buy a wild import that could turn out like mine did or a CBB that could turn on me it's a role of the dice. I wouldn't suggest someone go buy a wild import who is inexperienced, because you would be in over your head water monitors are high upkeep animals, what ever the case you if you decide to get one, plan on a lot of bonding, they are very social animals, and I actually posted a vid on KZbin of mine eating a wild anole, great job nerd keep up the good work and education.

Quincy James with wild caught you never know what parasites or diseases it might have. Some might not even be obvious at all, not even to a vet. Personally id never even allow a wild caught monitor in my house under any circumstances. Im not risking my collection over something so easily avoidable. Even my nile was hatched by a local breeder, not wild caught (It took LITERALLY years to find a true cb nile). Sure wild caught animals can potentially be just as good as cb, but you are taking a massive risk. Its going to cost thousands to build a proper enclosure and more thousands to feed throughout its lifetime, so whats wrong with paying extra money for the piece of mind that you are getting a healthy animal? Why spend thousands of dollars caring for an animal if it might not even be healthy and could potentially get your other reptiles sick? Thats my 2 cents anyways.

it's not really research it's a matter of a wild captured specimen costing a hundred bucks and a captive-bred 4th generation being eight hundred bucks at nerd which are beautiful but how can the average person afford that it's unobtainable so we have to do it we can to own is amazing creatures beautiful black dragon by the way
@alexcrowder1673
@alexcrowder1673 6 жыл бұрын
Paul Parks Ugh.... heres your problem, you assume that water monitors are a pet for "the average person"...water monitors are NOT for the average person. Why would anyone ever think that? These monitors get 5-10ft... and you think they should be affordable to the average person? Why? So that they can abandon them once they realize how expensive they are to house and feed once they get bigger? Where is the logic in that? They shouldn't be priced low because then people who cant properly care for them would end up buying them. Take nile monitors for example, they are only about 50$ and because of that we have idiots buying them right and left. Most people who buy large monitors dont end up successfully raising them into adults. More often then not they end up on craigslist, or are abandoned, or even die from improper care. It literally costs thousands of dollars to properly care for and house an adult water monitor or even the smaller Nile monitor. So why on earth should "the average person" even own one? They just shouldnt! These are not beginner pets. They are LITERALLY one of the most expensive reptiles to care for. This isnt like buying a bearded dragon. You need a 6ft by 12ft enclosure for an average water monitor. Some of the huge males that are pushing 10ft will need something close to twice that size. You say "its not a matter of research" but really its just that YOU havent done your research so you dont know what you are talking about.

@@alexcrowder1673 Wow a reptile elitist. I'm guessing only Alex has the superior intellect to care for a larger lizard than the masses. Paul had a point in that while a captive bred animal may have less parasites, a monitor that was wild caught may turn out fine at 1/5th the cost.
@stevenf927
@stevenf927 3 жыл бұрын
@@ashbyt1 A wild caught monitor may turn out fine... But it also may die. Or it may require multiple trips to the vet which ends up costing more than the NERD monitor. And it may socialize fine. Or not. And then to keep it you spend $1,000-$2000 for an enclosure and around $1000/year for 15 years for food, electricity, etc. So with a wild caught you spend $17,100 over its lifetime or for a NERD monitor you spend $17,800 - congratulations you've saved 4%!
