So from what ive observed with your interactions and your behaviour with your mangrove monitors are they are okay to think "okay this guy is a danger i need to hide constantly" that is a behaviour that can be overcome with socialzing session, which you have done, and good for you its always great to get them out and excercise. But these lizards record everything you do in these little episodes and they remember patterns you exibit every day, they can memorize how you open and close the glass and figure out how to get out, they can remember how youll interact with them with every feeding. The reason i am saying this is your allowing your mangrove monitors to remember and record and program in their brains that you are a danger even if you give them everything they want. Monitor lizards who dont have as much places to hide get the real chance to know u and interact with you, they appreciate touch ALOT more than you think. They can be sweet and not freak out and become mellow over time. So in each session try it out try to introduce touch to them they are so smart and they will record every episode you will have with them. Little by little end it on a positive note, give them more interactions with you that dosent involve food, just try to focus on reprogramming their thinking mode from "oh my god im going to die i need to hide" to "oh what are you up to i want to interact with you" try it man, may do wonders. And yes i have a baby month old mangrove myself they are a shy soecies that hates to even be looked at, they hate everything i get it, and its a burrowing species too, i get it i see it everyday, but what ive noticed when socialzing with my mangrove everyday is he just starts to remember what happens next and then one day boom he just let me go up and touch him with no fuss and his tongue flicked constantly which is good sign. Give your mangrove the socialzing chance it needs to understand it dosent need to freak out anymore and hide and fear for it life.

I rewatched the video I made the day I got these and I was so excited and passionate and in love (I still am) but now 4 months of not seeing them and my day to day life you soon forget and take things for granted! I find as adults they’re okay but babies oh man babies 😭

@Pauls monitors it was the same back the when I got my pair, they where about 30-40cm. But the melinus I had many years ago where more calm, and became so tame that they would jump down onto me to get food ( you only wear a t-shirt once when that happens). I have been thinking about getting melinus again,

I held a mangrove at repticon back in February and I fell in love and now I plan to build a 5x2x2 with an extension on one side that makes half of it 4.5 feet, enclosure for a juvenile until I get my rescue reptile zoo up and running which should be in 2-3 years and then I’ll transfer the mangrove to the giant habit that I plan on building complete with a pond for him to swim and catch fish, but I love them so much!!!

Not a bad video mate, but speaking as a person who has seen these animals in the wild. You need so much more water, they are spending most of there time underwater. They are one of two monitors in the planet that have the ability to expel salt through there nostrils, what does that tell you? It means that these guys have evolved to swim in between MANGROVES, hunting for fish and crustaceans in salt water. Everything else is pretty big, but I’d honestly scratch the substrate and just fill the base of the exoterra with water

I appreciate the comment and insight I’ve tried keeping heavy water and 50/50 and Like this They always choose to burrow over swim I find my adult uses water more than babies But keeping multiple animals in different ways to see what they pick, it’s always burrowing. Now that also tells me something The new massive set up for my adult and all my adults as they grow will have a massive pond area I knew about the salt spraying My theory on babies burrowing is less will kill you under ground than in water when you’re young

I use top soil and play sand, more sand than soil Make sure it’s deep enough for them to burrow and when they dig it holds a burrow, you can just leave it though, every month or so you have to check it and water and turn

I’ve seen people say one good way to tame a monitor is to put it in a bath so it has to climb onto your arm when it doesn’t want to swim anymore is this true and would it work on an ackie
@paulsmonitors
@paulsmonitors Жыл бұрын
It’s not true… you’re allowing them to be stressed by taking them out the viv Get more stressed swimming And getting cold in the bath Then they use you as a bridge… that’s not taming… I’m all for taking your time and letting your monitor trust you, there is more than one way to do it for sure But I wanna do things on my monitors terms Slow and steady wins the race
