Try filing the flashing down on the flange face of the water pump. That gasket does not compress a lot so imperfections on the metal to metal sealing face can cause weak spots in the seal.

My 2003 I bought with 100k miles has the original water pump and is pushing 200k now. Only thing I've replaced on the engine has been belts and pulleys, and the t-stat. Fixing to do the filter head next as the bypass is stuck open.

Great information. Just bought a 2006 5.9 with around 100 k. Time to consider the maintenance task. Thank you. Great content in your channel as well.

Thanks for the information… I recently change my original at 115k….i went with cheap replacement with supplied gasket only ….. the good news is it was by far the easiest waterpump replacement of my many over the years

On my 2012 6.7 Cummings deisel. My OEM made it 4 years. My aftermarket one made it 6 years. Driving the same route. Just put on my 3rd water pump. At 180,000 miles. The aftermarket market I put on from O'reilly's made it longer. MTC Item Number CP6222 The OEM and aftermarket electric clutch fans are both trash. I'm looking for a flex fan to replace it with. Do away with it. At least it'll turn. The company I'm working for. Bought several 2011 2500. They should have come with a bed load of replacements. Also, all the ignition key switches were trash. Had to hold and wiggle them. To get them to start. My 2012's the same. Not to say. The put ball joints on them will out grease zerks. Know they didn't last long. Or the front-end stabilizing shocks. Need replaced regularly. Or 40 to 55 mph. You'll have a wobble. Especially on rougher roads. Sad one paid so much money for the trucks. Then you have to bye part after part. Or get special tool's, or make special tools. So you work on them with! The water pump is a simple replacement. Put a bungee strap on the belt to keep tension on it. So it doesn't come off the other pulley's. Take the tension off the tensioner. Slide serpentine belt off. 2 bolts to remove. Simple rubber gasket. Clean put new one back on. I've done several ac evaporaors and heater cores. All even with the in cab filters. The evaporators and heater core pretty much stopped up with dirt. They barely blow out the vents. On my personal 2012, just replace air conditioning evaporator 3 years ago. Maybe 3 1/2 years ago. Already barely blows. It didn't have the in cab filter. So I put one in it. With the kit. It won't be long until I'll have to replace the ac or heart again. I'll have to clean the one I'm not replacing out. That's a joke of a job! I have to remove the entire dash. Drop steering wheel. Just to be able to take the inner box. Which contains the heater core and ac evaporator, and you have to disconnect both. Bye-bye, freon. The engineer who designs these vehicles. They should to have to work on them for 5 years. Lol, I guess you can tell I'm a little bored. How about on other engines. They run carbon steel bolts through timing covers, heads, and water ports. No matter without heat , or how much heat one puts on them. Turn them in and out. In and out. Even though they had antiseize on them. They break and/or take all the threads out. Then you get to pull the motor. Drill, tap, heli coil them. Then they are running you against a book. Telling you how long it will take. It'll take about as long to clean the baked on oil, grease, dirt, and gaskets. As the book gives you time It'll take. No, the engineers who design these vehicles. They should have to work on them for 10 years. Well, it looks good on paper! Lol

So the o-ring gasket is failing...not the pump!.....?

I got you all beat, my 2007.5 6.7 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 ST 6.7L Diesel has the orginal water pump and I have 280,262mi on it. I am going to replace it with an after market from Bullet Proof Diesel, it was $400 for it. Also have to change my Oil Cooler Housing Gaskets but I just went and bought everything new, Housing, Oil Cooler, Gaskets and bolts.

Interesting. I wonder if the Cummins seal can be purchased separately, since that’s apparently what fails on the aftermarket ones.

I got a 'mystery' leak on my 03,5.9,2500 the other day. The fan blew the coolant everywhere, but just somtimes. Week earlier replaced the steering pump and had to remove the water reservoir tank in the process. I looked everywhere until I discovered the water pump leaking with the engine cold, but quit leaking whet getting up to operational heat. Good maintenance records, ( second owner) but no record of replacement. 110k miles, 180k km. 20 years and the truck is good for another 20 years hopefully, so I replaced the pump with OEM pump. 3x the prize of OEM in the US, but thats the price for using US made trucks on another continent. 😉

I’m actually having good luck with my latest car quest brand pump with the blue gasket maker. Up to about 85k miles or so on it. Installed in 2019.

Are you running a coolant filter on your setup?

I think it just lack of quality control. Has nothing to do how long a pump will last by putting gasket maker on it.

So when you say the water pump failed, you are referring to the gasket and not the pump itself?

Are you using the supplied gasket and coating it with blue? Or just using the blue gasket maker and discarding the supplied gasket?

I’m putting a bead of the blue and then installing the supplied gasket on top of the blue and then let it dry.
