Water shut off under sink? Most of us have them under our bathroom and kitchen sinks as well as under our toilets. There are multiple styles in different configurations and today I have five different variations to show you. Screw pipe, copper sweat pipe, compression style, shark-bite style & finally P.E.X style. Let's check them all out as shown on my "speedy valve" Christmas tree.
Happy Plumbing,
Bob
USE CAUTION: When replacing any of these valves MAKE SURE to shut-off your main water supply before proceeding. YOU'RE WELCOME!

Nice job explaining all the different styles. Where I live in Phoenix AZ I don’t think I’ve ever seen a single sweat on valve. They are exclusively compression valves here. IPS is also very rare because not many houses still have galvanized steel (probably because of our poor water quality) finally, houses built in the last 15-20 years are almost exclusively plumbed in pex usually with plastic Accor style angle stops on it.

Very complete. Years ago , I soldered male threaded fittings on the copper pipe stubs. I’ve been using quarter turn valves lately as replacements. For the full turn valves , I open them up all the way and then close them back a quarter turn and haven’t had one freeze yet. Glad to see you are not a Sharkbite hater. As long as you follow the directions they are as foolproof as any other connection. Brasscraft sells a rebuild kit for the full turn valves ; if you have that type , worth having a kit around in reserve for a couple bucks.

Great video Bob! Thank you for sharing. Another idea for a possible future video is how to adjust a toilet so that it refills the bowl "properly" after flushing. We've got one that suddenly, about 2 months ago, quit refilling the bowl properly after a flush. The bowl now only gets enough water to be 4-6-inches in diameter at the surface of the water and about that deep too.

I know this video talks about the toilet constantly leaking, but as an aside, if that refill tube is not placed to replenish the water in the bowl, the level will be very low,. I often find they are just unclipped from the overflow and refilling into the tank. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIqzZ3mDpK2KkJosi=nL0kbC09NE0Mrr8u. Forward to about the 13:43 minute mark. Regards, Bob.

@@BobsPlumbingVideos Thanks Bob! I just looked and found that the ~1/4-inch refill tube that is supposed to "drain" into the overflow tube is way too short and sends the water directly into the tank (about an inch past the overflow tube). The water level in the bowl never increases above the ~4-inches of depth it ends up with. My wife or I must have cut it too short the last time we had to replace the refill valve. However, neither of us would have cut it too short within the last year, so something else must have changed earlier this year (2024) to cause the bowl to not refill properly.

Nice video Bob. Your videos are always detailed and informative. I am in Western Nassau county and always use IPS 1/4 turn valves. I go through my house and turn all the valves on and off twice a year so they don't seize up or leak. I don't like sweated valves as its more work to replace them when they go bad.

FYI you can crimp either pex a or b. So if you don’t know what kind of pex it is get crimp stuff. On the reverse it won’t work. You can’t expand pex b

Check into zurn expansion pex B. I was shocked too when I first saw that.

@@everythinghomerepair1747 yeah I’ve heard of it. I never can remember whether it’s zurn or watts. Our supply house was going to start carrying it but it never panned out. I once put an expansion coupling in a 3/4 viega line. I needed a temp fix until the next morning. It held fine and when I cut it out, the only way to save the coupling was to heat and remove like I do uponor. I wonder if zurn did something different in their pex b or if it just works but they’re the only ones who do it. Hopefully the latter because I’d hate to be limited to their pipe only

Any preference between the 1/4 turn ball valves compared to the multi-turn valves? The former seem more modern and easier to use, but aren't serviceable. Also easier to damage when sweating/soldering on, and then they might never fully shut off properly. The latter have the rubber stopper and stem seal that harden and leak over time, but at least those are replaceable without having to remove or desolder the housing.

I'm old school and still prefer the continuous turn washer style brass or plastic. In hard water areas the 1/4 turn ball style valves tend to get stuck!
