Great video. I will add a couple of suggestions. 1. Get a second person to help you empty the tank. These can be heavy. 2. The control valve has a screen filter and a couple of jets that should be cleaned every couple of years. Perhaps you did it but it was outside of the scope of this video.

Great video just what I needed. I think I will opt to change that o-ring while I have mines apart. As I’ve found with these kind of diy projects it cost you less in the long run to replace cheap parts that are old with new ones.

Wow, brilliant! Great attention to detail and very well-presented. As fellow Michiganders, we can really relate to the rust ring comment. We have Fleck softener and iron filter units and the water quality's starting to degrade after only seven years, so it looks like we may need to do this soon (we're getting our water tested today). Thanks again for taking the time to do such a thorough video.

@DaveWirth Жыл бұрын
I don't know. I just had the 1 tank. If you have 2 tanks, and they are both full of resin, and it's time to replace the resin, then i would guess you need to do both. But again, i don't know
@mpyoung33 Жыл бұрын
If you have 2 tanks then it is most likely a softner (smaller tank) and filter tank (large tank). The filter tank depending on your circumstances is usually filled with granular activated carbon media.

Just use a plumbing grease or lubricant that is rated safe for potable water. Supposedly once upon a time a lot of pipe dopes werent but they all have the nsf61 rating to be used for potable water

My Whirlpool water softener worked great for 9 yrs. Then I started getting a lot of white buildup on my plumbing fixtures (faucets, etc.) I had my water softener tank and brine well cleaned and the medium (beads) dumped and replaced with new. Unfortunately, I am still getting the white build up on my faucets 3 months later. The water tests ok (soft) and I have recharged the water softener three times (with cleaner) but it still keeps happening. What is the problem?

Thanks for this helpful video. The Purolite is currently $20 less. I'm a little concerned about buying a subpar quality resin. A few reviewers mentioned that the Purolite was a smaller bead size than advertised and caused problems. Have you had any personal experience with the Purolite resin?

We have very rusty water. We've lived in the house for 6 years, never changed the resin, and doubt the previous owners ever did. I just though that it would give more life to the softener and clear up the water a bit.

I think it's supposed to last for 8 years. Depending on how bad your water is. Not sure about the gallons

You forgot to mention to look for your original manual and understand how to cycle the softener to depressurize the media tank. Otherwise, depending on your design, you’re likely to give yourself a hell of a scare or a bruise on the face when it pops.

Ion exchange resin could always be recharged using salt water.
@wd8dsb11 ай бұрын
The resin ages due to oxidation and it breaks down into finer particles and becomes very ineffective (it turns into mush) and thus it needs to be changed when this happens. Typical life of the resin is 10 years depending on the chemistry of the water, etc. Higher levels of chlorine cause the resin to breakdown quicker as an example.
@Swampwild17 ай бұрын
I don’t understand. To recharge using salt water you would do a regen like normal once you’ve changed the resin and reassembled it.

Doing the math on buying the resin it seems like it would just ultimately make sense to replace the whole unit at the end of its service life (about 8-10 years for mine). Also, where did he put all that used resin? This whole process looks like a godawful mess.
