The cat you are painting looks very such like a British Shorthair (originally introduced by the Romans to Britain after the conquest). Our cats are British Blues, which are really dark grey blending into silver. I can't tell you how much fun it's been trying out a few of your tutorials during the COVID-19 lockdown. Thanks you so much from London UK,

You can do this with any color, try it! Today I tried it with blue, and it looked like a space cat but I kind of liked it.
@veryberry39 Жыл бұрын
By this point you've either bought black, or learned other techniques; but for anyone else coming across this who was in the same boat: color mixing! If you take ultramarine blue and burnt sienna, for example, they combine into a neutral gray! I learned to use those for shadows instead of straight black, since black is so stark and can sometimes deaden a painting. But you can experiment with adding complementary colors together until you get one that's dark enough! It just requires a bit of research and experimentation so you don't just get mud.

Great video, I want to know why the black didn't spill into the eyes and messed the yellow? was it because the area was dry? I'm new to watercolor, and your video is very helpful. Thank you.
@MrOtterArtStudio2 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes it was dry :)
@veryberry39 Жыл бұрын
Watercolor paint only wants to go where the water is. So if you let the eyes dry first, then just wet the paper around it, the black won't wanna flow over the dry bits. However, if you don't let the eyes dry first, everything will bleed together!

Is there a preference on whether or not to do this on cold vs hot pressed paper? And is there a way to tell from the tube if my paints are meant to flow more or not? O: I couldn't get the paint to bloom as dramatically so I kind of had to nudge it along

They are on my channel, I have a watercolor animal playlist you may like. Mr Otter inspired this channel. I found a picture of two baby sea otters and taped it to one of my college notebooks, and it honestly brought me so much joy every time I saw it, so when we chose the name for this channel and my business, I remembered him. I also loved Welcome Back Mr Kotter......on Nick at Night when I was young

I tried using black and water to make highlights and shadows on a black horse (more water=lighter area) but because I’m using gouache, the second horse in the image (who is brown) looks waaaaayyyy more opaque and the two subjects don’t fit together in the piece at all. How can I make the black horse more opaque without adding white for highlights? It doesn’t look right when I add white :/ it looks too..... fake gray.
