Transitions from warm to cool that happen too quickly can lead to "mud" - as well as using stain-based pigments. So try more textured papers and more sediment-based pigments to allow transitions to happen more gradually - As I remember, this is mostly Cobalt and Ultramarine Blue with Raw Sienna
