Sandi, Bob Burridge uses a product called skin safer barrier cream to keep paints from absorbing into your skin. Just thought id mention that if you are concerned. He uses it when hes acrylic painting.

I personally will stick to my brushes! lol Watercolor artist here…. My preferred medium for years now! Sandi, there are so many wonderful products that can be mixed with your watercolors also to achieve really unique effects! Everything from iridescent watercolor mediums to granulating medium, even texture mediums! It might interest you to take a look! I use various brush sizes and can get super loose. I prefer the travel watercolor brushes made from real animal fur. Once I gave up my aqua brushes (that hold water), and those plastic bristles ….. it completely changed my art. Happy painting!

This was a fun video Sandi and I loved seeing the looseness and textures you are achieving and developing. I hope you don’t mind me suggesting two artists whom I also watch on you tube that I’ve wondered for awhile if you would like to see their work- both paint very loosely with an obvious solid foundation of experience and learning behind them. For myself the three of you are covering a lot of bases for me (an experienced artist very much still learning). Christina Kent Art - I’ve learnt a lot from her, she’s very considered and thoughtful in her approach to her work. And Elena Burcio - whose whole approach and artwork for me is just exquisite and sublime. I find her looseness incredible. For me, your work Sandi is also exquisite and sublime - I get so excited by the combination of the three of you for me - perfection ! I want to thank you (& Grady 😊) for all the videos you’ve worked hard to put up for us this year, I love love love them 😍 and I wish you both a lovely festive Christmas🌲. Elena Burcio and Christina Kent Art

Hello Sandi, Thank you so much for taking us along with you on your artist journey!! I'm an artist too and there's been so much that I've learned from you the past couple of years I've been watching you... In particular, the information about "value/composition" in a painting, I totally forgot about or maybe, honestly, dismissed it while learning about it the first time... :) It's usually when I've gotten stuck or am feeling frustrated about where my painting is (at that moment) that I step back and then realize its a "value" thing... yayee! I always love seeing what you're creating in your sketchbooks... I usually have to go paint after I watch your videos! Thank you for always providing inspirational content! 🥰 -- Kari J

watercolours can be extremely toxic, some even come with a warning that they may cause cancer. you should really be super careful to only use non-toxic paints to touch with your skin, and warn your viewers as well (not many people will see this comment!)!
@kymcrowart78764 күн бұрын
@darklittlepeople, you scared me so I looked up how toxic watercolors are….this is what I found….The quick answer is that the majority of watercolors are classified as having “no substances in sufficient quantities to be toxic to humans”. Watercolor paints generally have a low toxic index, but the level of toxicity can vary depending on the pigments used in the paint ingredients. We Artists have been putting our hands in paint for hundreds of years… We just wash them asap….and pray…lol

As an artist and two time cancer (surviving) survivor I immediately worried about this too. Good to check your supplies for sure better safe than sorry.
@reeseosbornestudios4 күн бұрын
I guess one could wear plastic gloves if worried. I think there is paint on skin protection, too, but im not sure about that...Or only use natural watercolors made from natural resources? Usually I think those are earth tones. However, researching your supplies before rubbing your very absorbent skin, is probably best practice. Fingerpainting always looks like so much fun though.

"Artists doing this for 100's of years...." I have 2 artist friends who are still very adamant about finger painting, and they both have cancer.

yes! no cobalts or cadmiums for this technique! how can anyone work in paint so often and not understand that some colors are literally made up of toxic chemicals and substances that give off unique colors which is why they are used to manufacture paint?! that's like painting 101.

I'm at the point where I'm thinking why do we even bother with brushes when God gave us fingers?! Loved this.

I really wish I could join in on this, but I have Lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. For anyone with autoimmune conditions, I’d advise against it, as our skin absorbs everything we come into contact with, which can trigger an immune response. Adding in toxic pigments can lead to flare-ups, too. I usually try to use gloves, but honestly, they don’t provide the same textures. Just a little tip for those in a similar boat! Anyone in the same situation have suggestions?
@gingerblue3 күн бұрын
if it's for a sketchbook, there are tons of kids watercolors available that are beautiful and can be handled safely.
@rollo.qКүн бұрын
I was wondering if those silicone-tip brushes might work. They're sold for acrylics I think, but theyre sort of like a rubbery fingertip. I really like the look of the technique but I also like painting with heavy metal paints like cadmiums and cobalts which are definitely a little too toxic for me to feel comfortable sticking my fingers in, plus my joints get sore using my fingertips, so I think after a few smushes onto the page I'd be having a bad time. But I'm very tempted to try a silicone brush to see if it gives that finger painted feel.
@gingerblue23 сағат бұрын
@rollo.q the only problem is they are made to resist water (the silicone) so getting watercolor paint to stick to them is hard. It beads up. Maybe a very hard cosmetics sponge? They are made to take foundation/liquids a little but not absorb too much, like one of those beauty blender things.
@rollo.q23 сағат бұрын
@gingerblue oh that's a shame. Thanks though, that saves me some disappointment! Good idea about the make up sponges though. And they might have that nice marker texture like using a finger too.
@gingerblue12 сағат бұрын
@rollo.q and you can get them all shapes and sizes and tapered tips these days, too... I'll have to check them out myself! I hope they work for you! I have a (currently being diagnosed) auto-immune so I need to start thinking about how to create in more accessible and healthy ways, as well. Lots of hand pain.

Question, is this watercolor and gouache or one or the other? Sorry if you mentioned it and I missed it.
@spktme4 күн бұрын
It's both she did mention that in this video, and don't worry we all miss things sometimes, I just wanted you to know I wasn't guessing. 😂 She also has videos where she talked about the combination palette. I've now seen a few different artist do this and mention how they just like certain pigments better in gouache. It's always so interesting to know why they make the decisions they do. If I'm remembering correctly I think both her and Irit mentioned it was easier to quickly get a better color payout for certain pigments in the gouache and liked the way it behaved.😢 I would love to hear a more in depth thought process though about the colors picked and why, plus why gouache on some pigments and not others. But then again I'm just being greedy. 😂 Sandi's such a treasure so picking her brain and getting her takes are always a treat.
