In this video, I take you to Silver Falls State Park in Oregon for artistic inspiration. Back in the studio, we look at Ann Blockley’s book, Experimental Landscapes in Watercolor, and then try some new watercolor techniques. I tear apart a fresh sheet of watercolor paper and reassemble it in a new way for a fresh, exciting start to a new painting. I use salt to achieve a grainy texture. Come along with me to see the magic of the woods and the delight of creating with watercolors.
Thank you for clicking on this description! At this very beginner phase of my “content creation” experience, it is very exciting just to imagine that people watch my videos. I do a metaphoric backflip for each new subscriber. I know, I’m new.
There are amazon affiliate links sprinkled around in here. These are items that I have found to bring joy to my life and I hope they do the same for you. If you click on the link and actually buy something from amazon, I will receive a small commission with no extra cost to you.
In this video I used:
Ann Blockley’s book, Experimental Landscapes in Watercolor: amzn.to/3nN55jI
Ann Blockley’s newest book: amzn.to/3GqNGE2
Arches cold press watercolor paper: amzn.to/41cwLNC
Stabilo pencil, black: amzn.to/40cZjG8
Fineline Masking Fluid Pen: amzn.to/3Gr2dzJ
Favorite supplies that usually appear in my videos:
1. A porcelain plate or tray from the goodwill makes a great palette. So does a plastic lid from a yogurt container.
2. A used talenti ice cream cup is perfect for swish water; also a great way to buy art supplies when you “have to” eat the contents first.
3. A cheap Robert Simmons Expressions brush is perfect. The one I’m using here is an E85 Round, size 12. You can buy one at Blick Art.
4. I use a glass bottle that used to contain facial toner for my spray bottle. The toner was expensive, but it has a very pretty label. The spray is a fine mist and the bottle is the perfect size for using at home and also for taking out on location.
Some of my favorite art books:
Breaking the Rules of Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3IoJLZL
Taking Risks With Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3SMqCV8
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards: amzn.to/3kIwiDd
What I use to film and edit my videos:
Small, flexible tripod with screw-on grippy attachment that holds my iphone or gopro: amzn.to/3mEEGUU
Desk mount device that I use with the screw-on grippy attachment that came with my tripod - the desk mount (in combination with the grippy attachment) holds my iPhone 18-inches above my table: amzn.to/3L81XbK
Blue yeti microphone: amzn.to/3Fw1IE7
Lightning to USB Camera Adaptor - this is what I use to connect the blue yeti microphone to my ipad for voice over editing: amzn.to/3ZNxuUE
GoPro Hero10: amzn.to/3TFnvyU
It takes some getting used to, but for filming on hikes it is much better than using my iPhone.

You were starting to act like another painter I watch, who drives me crazy when you picked up that black, pencil to make marks. But your camera saved you. The painting is looking good. Don’t worry so much, yp\ou are so good at this. I wish I had as much talent as you have. Happy painting. Love, love your videos!

What a fun exercise and fascinating result. I'll definitely play around with this idea and check out Blockley's book. Thanks for another creative and inspiring video.

Hi Peggy! Thank you for your kind words! The tearing of watercolor paper felt so strange at first but it was such a freeing exercise - for instance, I now realize that I could tear a piece of paper to glue over the top of a problem spot on an otherwise promising painting.

@@klwebuga Fixing a problem spot is a great idea. I don't work much with collage but that made me think about using different papers to fix problems and thereby creating an entirely new painting. Artistic play is such fun!

I love this technique. I recently got introduced to Ann Blockleys work through another artist and have 2 of her books in my amazon cart ready to go. It's nice to see someone using one of her techniques to see what i'm potentially going to receive 😊I'm new to watercolour and very interested in mixed media and an abstract approach. Love this video 💚

I think you are quite brave to try this. I work more in acrylics, and while this year I've dabbled in watercolor/sketchbook work, I had to try to broaden my "horizons" and try giving abstract/expressionism a try. Hard to just let go, I'll tell you, since I do realism/representational type of art. But, I let it go. Most of it looks horrible, but some of it came out surprisingly well. Just try to expand and see where it takes you. One of the other artists I follow says, "It's just paint and a board".

Yes! I love that… it’s just paint. I’ve also heard a mantra that I like which says… just put something down so that I can then respond to it.

Love as always!... But the sound was weird this video. Had to turn it way up. Then it kinda got really loud in spots. ❤

Thank you for your encouraging words! I’m most definitely at the beginning phases of learning about sound, filming and editing! I’ll get it all worked out as I keep going!

@@klwebuga Cool 😎 I know that you just starting out, so I just wanted to let you know. I've seen several youtubers speak of the difference a microphone makes. Anyway, it was SO worth just turning up the volume. I really hope you keep making videos.
