I just discovered your channel and can't stop watching. The way you explain things, your soothing voice, sometimes the music in the background... absolutely perfect! Thank you for making these videos, your channel will be one of a few that I will come back to for education and relaxation. Best regards.

I was out last week photographing a farmhouse with two barns. this week I have been drawing this property and adding straw bales in the foreground as you have done. Not finished yet. This evening, for a change I watched this painting video of the same scene as you have already drawn, and I must say I was itching to paint my drawing of the farmhouse and barn I am busy drawing. My God ,it is so inspirational and relaxing to watch you working smoothie. Thanks a bunch ! Very enjoyable. Micheal

Thanks for the kind words Michael, just to let you know... before you decide to paint your drawing, I have had some very bad results washing over pencil drawings that were on cartridge/drawing paper, you will get much better results with watercolour paper.

Strange thing is smoothie I have always used watercolour paper for drawing with graphite, but this last week I managed to buy some cartridge paper. Thanks for the warning !

Thank you! its a pleasure to make these demos for everyone, I had a look further into the sound issue, haven't come up with any answers though? thanks for the kind words.

I thought the sound was normal compared to other videos I had just watched and I did not change the volume. Thanks for thinking about it but I do have a computer speaker system that is a bit different I think.

Thanks yet again for the excellent demo. Hope one day I can be half as good as you. As a side note, just done a thirty mile round trip to get a box of the Staedtler Lumograph black pencils. You have inspired me to dig out the old watercolour paints. Thanks again.

You're welcome Derick, I hope the 30 mile round trip was worth it and you get good results with the Staedtlers, they are a nice little set of pencils, I really enjoy using them, hope you do too, Happy painting!

This is wonderful... I've just discovered your channel and you are one of the ONLY ones I know who creates a graphite drawing with a wash over it. I recently saw a piece of art that I fell in love with done this way, but could find nothing on the 'how-tos' and tips for creating this effect. I found your "Watercolour Tips For Pencil and Wash Technique" yesterday and have been glued to your channel since! Have you written a book on this, or can you recommend other books on the topic of pencil and wash? It seems like a technique in need of some type of publication!

Thanks:) I hope you like them, they feel different to regular graphite, but they are nice to use for those matt black areas that are hard to get with regular graphite:)

quick question on how you did the preparing with water.. don't the graphite smudge with water ? is there anything you need to do before starting the painting with water colours ?
@maryalgar87797 жыл бұрын
I love the composition and enjoyed watching. I wondered if you ever used a bit of purple (greyish-purple) on hay bales? I am just learning.
@smoothie77drawingpainting7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mary, yes I think I did use a greyish purple wash on the hey bales before I went over them with the yellow mix.

Really beautiful! Smoothie, can I ask you a rather stupid question?(I know only a smattering of British arts) Is this combination of drawing and painting technique your own style or actually this has been found in the history of British watercolor paintings?
@smoothie77drawingpainting8 жыл бұрын
Its not a stupid question at all, its a very good question, The first time i heard about pencil and wash was about 25 years ago by an artist called Alwyn Crawshaw, he demonstrated the pencil and wash method in a learn to paint watercolour book, its a method of drawing or painting called "Grisallie" where a grey under-painting/drawing is use to lay down the tonal values before colour is applied.
@izakpolman62808 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your reply. So this method is made to flourish in your hand.
@smoothie77drawingpainting8 жыл бұрын
Oh I don't no about that:)
@izakpolman62808 жыл бұрын
Surely you do, or at least you are one of those. I would like to thank you for sharing with us the secret of drawing trees, bushes, grasses and the likes. I got 100 percent free from you whereas I got no understanding from Diane Wright and Mike Sibley after visiting their websites so many times before, they are my all time favorite artists though.

I find it interesting that, as far as I know, you never show yourself in your videos. Not sure if you ever saw the American comedy TV show, "Home Improvement", but Tim's neighbour (Wilson) was never shown in the TV show - they would just show the top of his head/hat as he was talking to his neighbour through the fence. So you're like the "mystery man".
@smoothie77drawingpainting7 жыл бұрын
No I haven't shown myself in a video yet, the videos aren't about me, there about helping others how to draw and paint, so you only really need to see my hands, I might one day put a photo up or show myself on camera if the video calls for that, but until then I will just have to remain "the mystery man" :D
