This "backwards" style of starting with the darks is extremely helpful. I learned it from a natural history illustrator.. she starts with the mass tones, builds the lighter areas with a series of glazes, then comes back at the end for the darkest shadows. The mass tones give you a "map" of where everything needs to be. The traditional method.. starting light and working to dark, means you have to plot darks over the top of a monochrome painting when it is successively harder and harder to see your drawing underneath. I find it so much easier and it produces better results with a ton of clarity and less layers overall.

I agree and I'm glad I'm not the only one! This way may not technically be 'the right way' with watercolour but it does make it a lot easier! 😊

@@SarahNewburyArt Her name is Lizzie Harper if you would like to see her work. She has a little KZbin channel but much more content on her blog. She just finished illustrating a book for Sir David Attenbourough.. she's very good... and a total sweetheart.

Is it just me? I found on corner flowers I am a naples yellow geek for backdrops on a paintimg :P Dunno whats with that. I just am addicted to that color.

Naples yellow is a lovely colour- I'd like to experiment more with colour and have just bought a new book called 'Colour Choices' by Stephen Quiller to help me. I'm excited to see what I'll learn and how I can use it in my paintings! 😊

Here are the substitutes I found (and tested) for each of the watercolour paints used in the tutorial. They are either _exact_ , _nearly identical_ or _similar_ replicas of the colours used. • *Quinacridone Rose* : permenant rose (PV19) *+* crimson (any deep red colour) = _exact_ (I believe permanent rose (PV19) + alizarin crimson hue (PR179) will also create this) • *Rhodonite Genuine* : rose permanent (PV19) *+* a bit of chinese white (PW5) = _nearly identical_ • *Pyrrol Scarlet* : cadmium red hue (PR149, PR255) *OR* vermillion (PR254) = _exact_ • *Hansa Yellow Light* : lemon yellow hue (PY175) + cadmium yellow hue (PY97, PY65) + a bit of chinese white (PW5) = _almost identical_ • *Jadeite Genuine* : hooker’s green (PY139, PB15, PG7) = _similar_ • *French Ultramarine* : ultramarine (PB29) *+* dioxazine purple (PV23) = _exact_ I used Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolours as substitutes. Correct ratios of each colour should hopefully result in the colours used in the video. (Trial and error).

Love love love :) YT needs to add hearts next to the thumbs up and ditch the thunbs down on the art video's. People get a free art lesson. If they wanna bitch, join twitter or do better yourself, right :P
