I loved how you ended the video sharing some thoughts at the old picnic table. You were talking about being away from civilization without the ability to make immediate phone contact in case of an emergency, or to quickly respond to a text, and yet you were so relaxed and at peace with God's creation all around you. Truly one of my "favorite of all time" video moments of yours. Something about this video reminded me of how I used to fish creeks in Missouri when i lived there. I'd love to see you try this... Split shot rig fishing for Smallies and Largemouth. Don't know if you're familiar with the technique, but I still use it in the ponds I fish with great success. (I am also almost out of my 30 year old Zoom Meatheads. Just bought some replacements and was very disappointed that Zoom seemingly no longer makes the 4" Meathead worm in Purple or Junebug.) Anyway, my rig is an "All Star" 7' Medium Power / Fast Action rod, with a 2500 Shimano Miravel Reel spooled with 15 lb. J-Braid and a 2', 8 - 10 lb. test mono (or co-polymer) leader (Ponds) or 18", 6 - 8 lb. mono leader for creeks. Then I use a 1/32, 1/16, or 1/8 oz. split shot weight, 7 - 12 inches above the hook and worm. I recently started using a bobber stop between the weight and the hook. It really works well keeping the weight from slipping down during a fish fight. My go to hook is a red Gamakatsu #1 (NOT 1/0) hook. I used to cast it upstream with either the 1/32 or 1/16 oz. split shot and then reel just fast enough to keep contact as if came back to me in the current. Also slowly bring / "drag and stop" it back along the bottom in "pools." It was, and still is a killer rig for me. There have been quite a few days that I've caught many fish in a pond I fish regularly, while other anglers were catching nothing! I've also caught fish on this rig while I wasn't even getting any hits on a weightless Yum Dinger. I've also substituted a Yum Dinger for the Meathead, and caught fish, but the Meathead seems to catch more! The action is just phenomenal. Try it! I'd love to see how it works for you in those creeks you fish! Blessings!

Man I couldn’t agree more on the “saftiest cult” of our time. Buddy who got me into backpacking (I got him into fishing & hunting) and I talk about this a lot. Seems connected to our maternalist culture plus our “life worship” where we preserve it so diligently yet simultaneously drain it of meaning. I guess if one believes that this is all there is he’ll guard his life as an end in and of itself in a way we don’t have to since we know better? The mountain streams are so beautiful along with the amazing waterfalls. However, you are right about the risk of exploring these remote areas. My daughter and her husband have been avid backpack campers for many years. They have frequently hiked the Buffalo River Wilderness National Park in Arkansas and did so again in early September this year. About noon on a Saturday, three hours hike from the trail head and alone just two of them without cell service, she fell and severely broke her leg. By the grace of God, four college kids came along and helped comfort her and prayed over her. After a couple of hours, an older couple that had taken the wrong trail came upon them. Thankfully, they had an emergency link device and contacted park rangers. It took two more hours for two rangers to hike in to them. A group of Mennonites that do rescue heard the emergency and they hiked in to help. The rangers contacted a rescue team in west Arkansas that managed to get a helicopter from the Air National Guard to fly in to get her. They could not land so she was hoisted up in a basket to the helicopter and taken to the nearest hospital at 6 pm, six hours after her injury.. Her husband had to hike back to the trail head and drive to the hospital arriving at 10 pm. We were able to get her back home and to a major hospital for surgery the following day. That was a month ago and she is healing slowly but getting better day by day. Thank the Lord for all those wonderful people that were there to help her and, especially, the couple with the emergency link service that came by purely by accident. My recommendation is to get one of those emergency devices. Those boulders and rocks are like walking on basketballs. It is just a matter of time until something may happen. My daughter has hiked that trail several times but it finally happened. Sorry for the length of this but I had to tell the story. God bless!.

I was always told buckeyes are good luck. Also always like to fish below people looking for gold usually stir things up knock some bugs off rocks and the trout or bass are usually taking advantage of it.

As I recall we usually caught a bunch of Rock Bass.....or maybe that was Clear Creek,...been too long for me to be sure. John, I have always been one who prefers to spend time alone and in wild places. I too have put myself into situations which would un-nerve most people. A few years ago I overturned my fishing kayak on a stretch of river I shouldn't have been on in that boat, I survived a pretty dangerous situation. I lost a lot of gear that day but ultimately, I was OK, and that is what matters. I have always been the type of person who goes backpacking, camping, and hunting alone in the backcountry, because I prefer the solitude and the escape from modern society. So I know exactly where you are coming from.

I am in the same boat in Northwest Florida. Our creeks our mostly sand bottom, and I think helgramites need rocks. They have some rivers with rocks in Northeast Florida, but not here.

you should make the micro hellgrammite for these streams - go do more exploring try some bigger places - you have seen bears - good you are packing a little friend - you need to hop on some of the premier smallmouth rivers from md/va and then going to alabama later in season - my thoughts

I mean just think if you had slipped and fallen on those waterfalls and broken your leg your back and we're unable to rescue yourself with no cell service at least that tag would more than likely get picked up. 😉
