It's tough to get started when you're the first in the family, and first of all your friends. Got no idea how to get started.
@mitchdroese846 жыл бұрын
I'm first in my family that I know of to duck hunt. My first hunt was today and I got 3! I bought a cheap shotgun, a box of decoys, and some ammo. I didn't use any calls, and I just layed down and covered myself with weeds and waited. Immediately ducks started coming in to my decoys. It was amazing, and I loved every second of it. Now I just need to be a better shot. I plan to keep trying!
@jimf19646 жыл бұрын
Mitch Droese Wow, that's an awesome story. Do you live near the country? How did you find the place? Part of my problem is I live in a town with almost 5 million people in it and the surrounding area. I know, even with all those people, there's duck hunting not too far away, but it's mostly on farms. Very few water ways that are out of city limits, and I got no boat.
@mitchdroese846 жыл бұрын
@@jimf1964 I have no boat. I hunted on a farm pond and I used a fishing rod to cast out and retrieve the ducks I shot. I do have the benefit of access to a pond to hunt on, but I'm looking at some public access spots as well.
@mitchdroese846 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I'd scout some places and go knock on some doors and ask if I were you. Look up hunting forums in your state too. A lot of those people are super helpful and might also be willing to take you.
@jimf19646 жыл бұрын
Mitch Droese Yeah, that's another problem for me. I live in Quebec, so it's pretty darn french...and I'm not. There just aren't enough english people to have any kind of forum, but I'll look into it anyway. It's just not well organized here. I'm hoping to move to english Canada soon though. Good idea with the fishing rod. Good luck, thanks for sharing. It's very encouraging,

The BEST advice I've heard in 56 years of waterfowl hunting and I started when I was 8 years old. Not only a psychiatrist, but also a financial planner who will restrict severely what you would spend on shotguns, shells, decoys, dogs, boats and travel. You're better off hiring a guide and claiming it as entertainment for clients. It will lead you to drink, or worse bad habits. You'll look back over the years and see where you could have invested your money better. Hell, I could have built a mansion out of the Jack Daniel's bottles I've emptied. I could have probably financed a presidential campaign with the rest. I don't regret any of it and would do it all over again.
@johnmeiners15879 жыл бұрын
I am 71 years old and have been duck hunting from age 10, My advice to would be duck hunters is to find some one who has been doing it for years and learn how to do it in your area. I started hunting with my grand father on the Mississippi Delta. As a young man i moved to the South eastern Virginia area and had to adapt to a the type of hunting done there. In Mississippi a dozen or so decoys and a fast open bore shot gun worked well for the flooded timber on the Delta. In Virginia on Back Bay a 3 inch mag. with a tight bore worked best. 30 years ago My company sent me to Eastern North Carolina and again the hunting was not the same. it was stake blinds with HUGE spreads of decoys. ( at least 10 dozen ) The birds were wind driven and very fast, they come fast and land quickly. again the tight bored 3 inch gun works well. The dog you use hear must be tough and stand cold rough water. Labs are a minimum but any strong retrever will do.I love your video but it does not represent my all the types or locations of duck hunting that we here in the south east have.

Just the sight of seeing birds turning your way. Watching them as they fly over your spread, their heads turning back and forth, the wind whistling through their wings. Seeing them decide this is where they want to set. Their wings setting and their feel dropping. There is absolutely nothing better than that! What a wondrous sight!

I appreciate the true aspect of this video. To pass down a historical knowledge and past time legacy. Many ask "how do I start"? Start with shotgun knowledge and safety, understanding the ducks and the habits of the duck, learn the unique history of America waterfowling, learn the techniques of waterfowling. And most importantly, know the law and conservation. There are many books and videos that will provide insights. Also, pay attention to the other hunters. Both good and bad. I got the addiction 38 years ago and haven't missed a season. I've hunted all conditions and terrain. I've had 4 retrievers. I hope to hunt many more years, in many more areas and with a few more dogs. Feet down!
