I'd imagine it'd have to be made of metal, and depending on where the turbine for driving the fan was placed, there'd be major issues with sonic booms happening at the edges of the fan blades, assuming it didn't just fly apart. I'd imagine it'd produce a stupid amount of thrust before it broke apart, though.

I’d be far more worried about the water jet. You could slice someone up bad. Not to mention the hydraulic needle effect potentially bursting other internal parts like a water balloon as the jet diverts all around.

Chainsaw bars are designed to work regardless of whether they’re upside-down or right-side up. There’s an oil port on both sides of the bar.

Chainsaw bar is actually correct either way. Most manufacturers recommend you flip the bar over every time you sharpen or change your chain. Awesome video guys. Love y'all both.

As mentioned before, it needs a gear reduction instead of being 1:1. Some hemispherical paddles on the input would take advantage of all the force of the jet. Also, a series of gears is a very inefficient way to transport power at a distance. There are more losses with this configuration than let's say, a belt, chain, etc. Hope this helps!

Connect the high pressure output to a suitable pressure wash hose and gun (with the trigger locked open so as not to harm the pump) and try to pressure wash something really greasy and funky with 60,000 psi and a 15° wash nozzle.

Cammi Rosanov tables use a special “whip” which is basically reinforced. I’ve always been curious to see what would happen if you let the whip free, and disabled the low pressure sensors that stop the pump.

A interesting demonstration of a crude water powered sawmill that has been done many times over the years. For small high speed water jets the turbine design has evolved onto a Pelton wheel so that should have been the starting point here. Leaving the centrifugal clutch on the chainsaw drive would have allowed the turbine to get started without the chain resistance. Better bearings mounting design may save their life one day, a gear coming loose and bouncing off some surface could spoil their day totally.

They sound the same because the water jet chainsaw setup has approximately the same high RPM as a dental drill, which runs on compressed air.

To avoid gears sliding off of bearings, perhaps take 1/8in or 1/4in. sheet metal on both sides of the gears to keep em in check

Probably work a lot better if you make a pelton wheel. If you're going to be doing a lot of spinning stuff, it would be interesting to synchronize a strobe or the camera shutter to the revolution of whatever you're spinning up.

You should try powering air tools with the waterjet. If you can use air pressure to spin things fast enough to cut metal, then I can only imagine water pressure could cut clean through to the core of the Earth

You should read shoot this video, using a single Gear Drive as you did at the end, except have that gear built with small paddles so the water jet catches them more efficiently. This should ramp things up even more, making your homemade waterjet chainsaw that much more efficient. Because, we all know you want to carry this around to a work site.

You should set up a small turbine and see how much power you can generate with the water jet. I know it wouldn't be as much as the jet uses but it would be interesting to see truly how much energy is actually transferred from the machine to the item being cut.

Could you see what happens if you spin up a dc treadmill motor with the water jet? It'll generate power, I once made a wind turbine from one. Maybe you could try light a bulb with it or something or just measure the output. They usually come with a large steel flywheel attached so you probably wouldn't need to modify it at all.

Zachary Hatch the problem there is virtually all metal can be cut by it (Waterjet operator here). It’s amazing what water and abrasive can do at operating pressure.

However.... if you didn’t initiate abrasive it is possible. Water alone on a Waterjet can only cut things that you could cut with scissors basically. The garnet is the real teeth in the system.

The bar is symetrical so there is no up or down, you’re supposed to flip it so it wears even on both sides

I think (and I'm not engineer, just a guy that likes machines) that if you had the water jet driving a larger gear and had it step down 2 or 3 sizes to a smaller gear to drive the sprocket, you might have been able to increase the speed of the chain and cut better.
