hi. I hope you've got it sorted out - we see a diver in the background of this video doing what you've described and it sure looks ungainly and inefficient. I'm no expert but I've had success keeping my body flat and straight as possible, arms extended and wrists clasped together out in front, then gently and slowly start scissor kicks keeping my knees more or less locked and legs hinging from my hips. Once I get moving it all feels quite natural and 'second nature'. It will help to get neutrally buoyant as soon as possible when you are at depth with your group, then follow the leader and enjoy!

Hey Melinda. To be honest Im not sure. I have no problem with it but other people have commented the same as you dating all the way back to when I posted this video. As far as a refresher goes, the best thing to do is go to your local dive centre and do a refresher with them. You really dont need to redo the whole course. Your local dive centre will pick up on all the most important points. Best of luck

So I have a question for you that no one until now was able to answer me. I also can‘t find the answer via google. Q: How long can you hold your breath while under water? I know this sounds trivial but the tricky part about this question is that I want to know how long you can hold your breath at a higher pressure, not during descending/ascending. So imagine you are scuba diving and staying at a depth of 20m. You don’t change your depth during this experiment. There are about 3bars of pressure down there so the air you breath has a density about 3 times as high as on sea level. The amount of air you breath in is thus about three times of that on the sea level. Volume stays the same but density is higher. Why can‘t you hold your breath longer if there are 3 times as many molecules in your lung? I have asked a couple of scuba dive instructors about this but no one could answer the question. My guess is that I just don‘t exactly understand the biomolecular side of the problem.
@WaterlineShorts2 жыл бұрын
It’s an interesting question. I have to make some assertions and then get to the answer. 1st off, “Never hold your breath on scuba”. I know you have defined the parameters of the question but this has to be said mostly for people who read this without the full context. It’s a habit you have to have. Also if a wave goes over head, more so in shallow water, it could rupture your lungs. Of course different people could hold their breath for different lengths of time. Perhaps 60 seconds for some and 5 minutes for a freediver. I’ve heard of people holding their breath for 20 minutes. Not sure of the validity. Having said that the main issue is simple but the explanation may be complicated so stick with me. At surface when you breath in and out you typically breath in about 20% oxygen and breath out around 4% CO2(carbon dioxide). That means your body breathing normally will sustain 4% CO2. If you hold your breath long enough you get dizzy and lightheaded. CO2 triggers your bodies need to breath fresh air. If you could hold out and not breath automatically you would eventually pass out. You need oxygen. Breathing in out out normally takes 5 seconds (just a rough guess if I count on my fingers). So theoretically ( just my assumption) if you hold your breath at the surface for 25-30 seconds you have used to your oxygen. Again this is me calculating based on what I know, this is not quoting from a study but this is how it works. So now we go down to 20m deep. Assuming you are a normal person, not super fit and not a free diver who has trained to control your mind and body. At 20m as you pointed out you have 3 ATMOSPHERES of pressure or 3 bar working in your body. So the 20% oxygen your breath in has the same effect as breathing 3 times that concentration. Or 60% equivalent. You would have to research pp or partial pressure. So the pp of oxygen at 3 bar is 0.6. The same equation must be used for CO2. The 4% you breath out has a partial pressure at the surface of 0.04. At 20 meters that is 3 times that which is 1.2pp which is like breathing 12% CO2 at the surface. It’s a bit like holding your breath for 15 seconds. If you talk to Instructors about skip breathing they will tell you if will give you a headache. Skip breathing is when you breath in, hold a little bit and breath out instead of just continuously breathing. It’s common for new divers to do this to try extend their dive time. It’s a bad habit for divers but seems normal because when you swim you naturally hold your breath. But that gives you a clue because if you get a headache from skip breathing it’s because CO2 is building up and it’s effects at 20m are 3 times as detrimental compared to the surface. So if you get dizzy after holding your breath for 30 seconds at the surface then you are starting to cause some harm to your body at 20m. The problem is that you could pass out and you would pass out quicker at depth than at the surface. Surrounded by water is not a good place to pass out. Before you pass out though you will start making bad, panicky decisions. So I hope that gives some clues. It’s not a straight forward answer. Technically if you could hold your breath for 1 minute at the surface, theoretically you could hold it 1/3rd off the time at 20m. But, the dangers of holding your breath in scuba are multiplied. The dangers are not just physiological. You also have to take into account your circumstances (surrounded by water) and the fact that water depth changes as waves pass overhead. All round, bad idea but I hope that gives you the answer you are looking for. Check my video about decompression sickness which gives some more detail on the partial pressures of gas at various depths.

I am curious about how anyone can openly endorse and defend its purported expertise by advocating a practice of kneeling at the bottom, all while justifying it as a simplified learning approach for students. There appears to be no legitimate rationale for instructing individuals in this manner or promoting such a practice. Furthermore, we are confronted with the harsh reality that a significant 90% of newly certified divers struggle to maintain their buoyancy when stopping their swim and resort to kneeling underwater. This issue cannot be attributed to the students themselves but rather points to the instructors and, ultimately, the subpar standards within commercial scuba agencies. It is truly astonishing. Stop the madness! One of the driving force we want our materials to be a bit more widespread so it will provide a perspective for those divers who come from the commercial meatgrinder of scuba diving.
