I own this pen, with the amber finish and gold trim. Love it, the fine nib is superb and lays down a wet line with pleasant feedback. Nice to hear that you are also a fan of the Diplomat Excellence! I own the Evergreen, with a gold fine nib. It was a revelation for me. I think it's the most robust and resistant pen I have ever seen.

The Amber is super beautiful, as well. I own two Excellence A at the moment in the two available Guilloche finishes that I like a lot - one with a Fine steel, and one with a Fine gold nib. They most definitely belong to my favorite pens. I think many more people need to be aware of the Excellence, since it really is an 'excellent' pen!

Indeed. I like especially about the excellence how durable and hard it feels in the hand. A very solid excellent pen, as you say.

I've just discovered your reviews. You do a very good job discussing the pens. You have convinced me to put this on my "buy" list. Look forward to future reviews. Thanks.

Thank you very much. Glad you stumbled upon my stuff :-)

I have a Sheaffer Taranis. It has a lacquer coating which catches scratch if rubber against anything solid. Handling three pens together is out of the question!!

I have the sterling silver Carene. Its shape on the butt end as seen from the side is inspired by the sterns of racing yachts. Great pen, one of my faves.

I bought a Blue ST with the fine nib a year ago, and I can say mine is an excellent writer. But like most of my thinner bodied pens, I find I don't use it and have moved on to larger pens. Thanks for the nice review.

Thanks for your feedback! The girth of the pen is pretty perfect for me. I don't find it too slim. But well, I guess that this is just a matter of preference. Thanks again for your feedback!

What is your view of Carene now? Did you have any problems with grip section getting scratches from capping the pen?
@Scrivelynotes5 жыл бұрын
alex mood no. No problems.

A lovely looking instrument, Michael, but you know, as soon as you uncapped it, & I saw that nib, I thought, "That's a sheaffer !! " Montblanc call those type of nibs, 'Intrasia' - slipped into the section housing, with the distinctive 'widow's peak' (that refers to the hairline on the forehead). It is, undoubtedly, aqualine in form - boat shaped. I do like that it is a longer pen, too, & the aesthetics (as well as the 18k/750 Rhodium plated gold nib) give it that expensive touch. For around £149.00 GBP (current, October 2018), that's a pretty good deal, & as we (all) know, you like black & silver finishes in particular, there were no surprises in your selection ;D Great review !! :D

Thanks a lot my friend. I really love this pen. And your detail on the widow's peak was a new learning for me today. Thank you for that!

You're welcome..that's the great aspect of a site like this - the exchange of information - in a friendly & conducive atmosphere is all to the good !! :)

How does the nib compare to the waterman expert? Is it worth the upgrade or is just personal preference? Thanks
@Scrivelynotes6 жыл бұрын
To me personally it definitely is worth the upgrade and the difference in between the Experts steel and the Carenes gold nib can definitely be felt. Certainly on the finer nib grades

Thanks for reply. I just picked up the Carene and its a wonderful pen.

Happy to hear that!

Looks does matter - especially when the pen performs as well as the Carene does. One of my recent favourites as well. Would love to have the orange one. Thank you.

Hi Would you recommend this or a lamy 2000 for an everyday writer at school? Thanks
@brendangriffith44137 жыл бұрын
Scrively Brilliant. Thanks for the rapid response aswell!

Would you recommend the Caréne for writing 5000 words in around 2 1/2 hours exam?
@Scrivelynotes7 жыл бұрын
I generally don't see any problem with that. If the grip suits you personally (it would for me), there is no problem. Of course, take extra ink-cartridges with you just in case. I find the Carène to be a wonderful writer. And honestly: I've survived 4 hrs exams with a Lamy Logo ballpoint back in the days :-). So the Carène will certainly make writing a pleasure ;-).
@oliwiereb7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your response, I think I'd go for the Deluxe Black version, medium nib (hopefully it will increase smoothness).
@Scrivelynotes7 жыл бұрын
Most welcome! I find the Fine to be very smooth anyway. Be aware that the Carène nibs tend to run on the wider side. That means that the Medium might very much write like a Broad. I'd recommend to take that into consideration.
@Scrivelynotes7 жыл бұрын
I think this is true for Waterman nibs generally. I also have an Expert (steel nib) - it had a Medium on and was so broad that I had it exchanged for an EF. Anyway, Waterman has a quite good customer service and you can always send the pen in and they will normally exchange the nib/section free of cost - if everything is in mint condition, that is. My Expert's section was exchanged within 2 weeks or so - door to door.
@oliwiereb7 жыл бұрын
I've heard quite a few people talking about it being on a the wider side, with the Medium being like a Broad... I might be tempted to go for the Fine then. I won't have time to exchange it as I've got my first paper on the 5th of June, so taking the Fine would be more secure I guess. Thank you for your help, subscribed :)

I couldn't capture, what ink is that?
@kevinu.k.7042 Жыл бұрын
Think of a racing yacht. The sloped barrel end is the stern. And the metal caps with the wave pattern? Anyway, it appears that I was mistaken to have consigned Waterman to the "living off our past reputation" type of pen company. I have always found your pen opinions to be well founded, my views have been updated. I have only one space left in my baize lined wooden pen storage trays. I'm saving that for now and so it is that I must pass on this pen. Great review. Thank you.

It is a great pen. I sold mine, though. Sometimes I regret it a little bit. But also not really - there are so many other great pens out there; and I do try to keep the personal permanent 'collection' at a minimum.
@pablorey92036 жыл бұрын
compare the pen without the cap, and search for yachts images... so you will understand. As always great vid.

Is it smooth in writing?
@Scrivelynotes7 жыл бұрын
Well, it is. In a way. Not the "butter on glass" kind of smoothness though. Rather like writing with a pencil. You will feel the friction of the paper.
@paulmetdebbie4474 жыл бұрын
Mine is glass smooth.
@highwoodsironworks9026 жыл бұрын
To my best knowledge the pen is spelled "Carine" , so the apostroph "E" is spelled like an "I" 🙈
@Scrivelynotes6 жыл бұрын
You probably mean 'pronounced' :-)
@hughmungus15726 жыл бұрын
No, Carine is false. The way he says it is perfectly fine.
@akuma13296 жыл бұрын
In french, the letter "e" is pronounced like some sort of "o" while "é" is pronounced as the "e" sound when spelling "a" in english.
@akuma13296 жыл бұрын
So it is kind of pronounced somehow like if you said "car end ne"
@hughmungus15726 жыл бұрын
@@akuma1329 No, Scrively is right. And I speak french fluently.
