Pretty funny knowing in french, watermelon translate to " pastèque", which can be translated to " not steak "
@katra56735 ай бұрын
It absolutely CANNOT be translated to "not steak". It sounds like it, but it can't be translated to it.... Steak in French is "steak", not "stèque" As he said in the video, "you cannot call two things the same just because they are similar"

Heh, not steak steak
@baggybones5 ай бұрын
I applaud the coj'nes of saying something so incorrect with so much confidence lmao If you know french,you know the "è" accent makes a different sound than how steak is pronounced in french. If anything,the "stèque" part of pastèque sounds closer to "stick". I have to precise that I know you speak french,but come one man, c'était même pas ingénieux (no offense). Maybe I'm being too grumpy lmao,ma bad. Mais je te le dit car peut être quelques personnes peuvent penser que c'est vrai.
@Ruchunteur5 ай бұрын
@@baggybones it really depend on your accent. near Paris the "stèque" sound exactly like "steak". literally no difference. (except the spelling of course). I don't know anyone that would say "stèque" as closer "stick". And I just check on the internet, the phonetic for steak is [stεk] and for pastèque is [pastɛk] . that's literally the same sound as far as dictionary goes. (and when you have the option to play the sound it sound the same too) So yeah, you are indeed being a little too grumpy by denying his joke because of a regional difference in pronunciation you may have.
@baggybones5 ай бұрын
@@Ruchunteur Ya, I was thinking that. Where I live,we pronounce it as "Steak" (like how you would pronounce it in English),so "stèque" would be a different pronunciation.

Yeah that sounded like a bad idea from the start... however, the word "steak" isn't exclusive to beef, it typically is beef but you can have a gammon steak (pork) fish steak, even chicken steak (which for some reason seem to usually be associated with being deep fried like a wiener schnitzel, which is pork, but even an un-breaded, plain old chicken can be cut into a steak). The word "steak" means a thick cut slice. So yes... even a watermelon can be cut into a steak

I have seen people make something like this and give it rave reviews. This was doomed to failure. IIRC you want to skin the melon and smoke it for about 8-12 hours; then slice an marinade. A little soy sauce, but also some tomato paste and steak seasonings. You didn't get it hot enough to actually cook and reduce at all. So your end result was warm watermelon in soy sauce; not cooked then grilled watermelon in a savory glaze. Huge difference. The first cooking process reduces the water and makes the starches and proteins in the watermelon form a chewy matrix rather than a crunchy one. It's exactly like cooking pasta. You use a lid to keep heat in. The second cooking is to develop the flavor. Generally at a higher heat to caramelize and sear. You attempted to do both with just one cooking attempt and failed. The watermelon was too juicy to caramelize or sear and didn't get enough cooking time to have the stage 1 changes to texture and flavor.

If properly grilled it caramelizes some of the sugars in the watermelon to make it have a nice undertone to its flavor, and the salt helps to enhance those flavors.

The video was made insincerely so "vegan haters" could have something to rage over. Watermelon steak isn't something I've tried, but it's not that wierd if you've ever grilled pineapple or other fruit during a BBQ. Apparently, done right, it has a more savory taste and a texture similar to grilled fish.

@cooldud70715 ай бұрын
@@GiggaGMikeE I use salt + soy sauce in my steak brines often. Brining is far more intensive than just covering. However, even for cooking steaks, you're supposed to pat the outside dry. You won't have a nice crust otherwise. Watermelon is mostly water and cellulose, so I'd imagine getting rid of most of that water would make a far better product in terms of texture and taste.
