papercrete for outside projects works well in arid country's, but anywhere that has rain it needs to be sealed air tight. maybe seal your papermache sculptures with a fiber glass shell, face masks ready. I have a lovely book from the 80's that shows work by Roger Dean making pods shelters. was either in "Dragons dream" or "magnetic" storm, one of those two books. strips of thin wood build up a sphere skeleton and paper mace is creates a stress skin, then fiber glass and spray paint are the final layers.

Interesting - I wonder if the pod shelters are still standing. They do make boats with fiberglass, so it should hold up well in the weather. My experiments obviously didn't work. so this might be worth a try if you really want to make outdoor sculptures with paper mache. I've decided to use epoxy clay, like Apoxie Sculpt or Free Form Sculpt or Magic Sculpt, instead.

Have you tried putting resin on the final project?

No, I haven't, but I think some other people have. The resin is expensive, though, so I prefer to use waterproof sculpting products to start with, because none of my experiments in waterproofing the paper mache have worked well. After the clay mache dries, could you use a concrete slurry?

When putting paper mache outside, the armature cannot be cardboard or paper or anything that can hold moisture, because it will mold. Using a foam interior, or wire mesh is better. It would be sad to loose a sculpture you worked hard on.

Yeah, this experiment didn't work very well. The paper mache clay softened the very first time it rained. I don't use any paper mache outside anymore. Have you seen my garden gnome videos? kzbin.info/www/bejne/narUpHWiZ891p6s

But that's the purpose of a scare crow, to scare the crows away from a vegetable garden. So the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz was probably in a veggie garden.

I have no idea. It might work, but none of my waterproofing experiments with paper mache have worked so I gave up. I now use Apoxie Sculpt for outdoor sculptures.
