I always love getting updates on your home. I'm addicted to construction videos and your home is by far the most fascinating.

I've been watching these videos for years. Nice to see a new show. I was super impressed with the beams you poured and set in place. Of course that's now the only impressive feature of your home. If I were to begin building a new home I would use this as a go to for sure. Super cool home! Hope to see more installments in the future.

I came pretty close to skipping this one completely. I think the next step is more interesting.

It is always a good day when you post Simon, I saw you had one in Facebook and left a message there as well, I know that you are busy with life, but every single video you put out is always full of interest and wonder for those of us who wish we could do what you are doing, 1 powerball (lottery win!) and I could. BTW have you been watching the antics of Colin Furze and his secret underground tunnels etc? Pretty impressive for a suburban block in England lol imagine all the permits sheesh! OH yea, I am very impressed with Colin Furze. He is quite a crazy genius.

@@SimonHomeintheEarth I would hate to know just how much the tunnel build is costing him I would guess he has sponsorship in some form but I don't think he would get any change from 1/4 of a million pounds He must have a very understanding wife!

One is "rendering" right now. It should be up this evening.

Thanks for the interesting video. I was wondering where you plumb your discharge water? I have seen articles for and against discharge into a septic system.
@SimonHomeintheEarth
@SimonHomeintheEarth 8 ай бұрын
Yea, I plumb it into the septic system. I did try using the French drain (the mechanical room floor goes to the French drain), but it can't take the water fast enough to keep up with the discharge. Short of running another whole system or sending it down the earth tubes, I didn't have any other options. I did wish I had plumbed it right into that room though. Instead, I had to go up and thru the wall and into the drain stack in the basement bathroom.

There is a new filter based system. No more need for added media. Maybe not for rust tho.
@SimonHomeintheEarth
@SimonHomeintheEarth 8 ай бұрын
Yea, I looked into those types of systems. They have a cartridge section that you can pop a filter into (sort of like an inline fuel filter). The obvious advantage is you don't need to buy all that salt (about 5$ a month), but the filters don't work quite as well at softening the water and they are not cheap either. The filters need to be replaced and cost over 100$. I ended up going with this approach, but I am interested in hearing if anyone has tried the filters for softening water?

@@SimonHomeintheEarth I'm planning on using them. It's going to be interesting to see how they handle acidic rainwater. Yes, 1 source is hard & the other, rain, can be acidic. I'll probably try to treat the acid 1st. Its going to be awhile tho.

@@SimonHomeintheEarth what brand is your water softener? I had a all in one unit Craftsmen brand and it used a ton of salt. So I quit using it

The problem I see is that most people in the US are deficient in magnesium, an calcium, we used to get in our water, but now, most of our water is filtered. You may want to look into what happens in your body if it's deficient in magnesium
@SimonHomeintheEarth
@SimonHomeintheEarth 8 ай бұрын
Yea, a little magnesium is great, but we had way too much of it. The kind that clogs up your shower head and fouls your coffee maker and kettle. We get lots of magnesium from other sources (such as leafy vegetables, nuts, grains, etc.) We don't need magnesium carbonate clogging up our pipes. ;)

Watch out for your pool, if you fill your pool with softened water, you will still get some salt in the pool, and this can impact your pool water and fixtures in the pool. If you're using a salter water pool with a chlorine generator, your salt levels may be impacted by using softened water.
@SimonHomeintheEarth
@SimonHomeintheEarth 8 ай бұрын
That still must be better than adding the rust and calcium carbonate that is naturally in the water.

@@SimonHomeintheEarth - Oh, for sure! I filled my pool with softened water too. I'm using a chlorine generator though and realized that softened water increased the dissolved salt levels in the water, so I had to factor that in when "adding" salt to the water for the chlorine generator.

I can't help but ask- do you have a separate cold water heater, or can your hot water heater also heat cold and lukewarm water? 😆
@SimonHomeintheEarth
@SimonHomeintheEarth 8 ай бұрын
Actually, in my case, at least now after hooking up some other systems, the water from the well goes thru the floors first, so that warms it up to room temp. Then it goes into the solar water heater and gets dangerously hot. We cool it down again with some cold water (via a thermal mixing valve) to get it just below the temp set on the hot water heater, which then just tops it off if necessary ;) So yea, I am one of the few people that actually has a hot water heater, at least while it is sunny. ;)
