Thank you for the update! When I look for examples of earth integrated homes I get nothing but earthships and their dogged desire to be eco friendly clashes with my desire to have a modern home with a seemless feel from current buildinhg that my wife would be interested in pursuing and you have done a great job with yours. Thanks for breaking a trail!

Yea, I have got some hate mail from the earthship folks because I am not pure enough and use concrete and insulation and run electricity from the grid. Don't get me wrong, I am interested in getting solar panels one day, we are just not there yet. And I don't believe concrete is as bad as they say. If it had more embodied energy, it would cost more to cover the cost of all that energy. The fact that it is super cheap is a strong clue that it isn't that bad. And the durability and strength of concrete just can't be beat.

Fantastic! I must have missed the move in... I admire your vision and courage to make it happen. I would aspire to something similar but those days may be behind me now. Alas! Judging by the snow cover you must be in Kansas or perhaps the Nebraskas. I noticed that's where the band of snow was in the past week or 2.

South East Michigan. We just had a cold few days. If we get another warm up, I'll finish up that trellis outside. If not, then I'll keep working on the office and kitchen. Its always good to have options in case the weather doesn't cooperate.

Ooooof! So much work! As you are sitting there with so many unfinished projects - do you ever wonder if you should have scaled it all back at the planning stage? When I was planning my home, it would get out of control and I would collapse it back to a simple project again. I’d probably still be working on it today (13 years later) had I not simplified everything. Great project! You do you! 😂
@SimonHomeintheEarth

Oh yea, we went way too complicated... I was experimenting with different methods. But it was a process so I could learn about the different methods. If I could go back, I'd avoid doing a number of things that just made things more difficult.

Awesome. Acoustics definitely an issue. There are some partial solutions, even post design. I guess an engineer knows all that already....
@SimonHomeintheEarth
@SimonHomeintheEarth 9 ай бұрын
Yea, I had imagined I would need to do something, especially in that office. All the other vaults were designed so the echo is high above your head and you don't hear it walking around. For the office, I was thinking fancy stuff like acoustic panels laid out like a geodesic dome (I wanted to build something geodesic and that would be the perfect excuse). But then I put a desk, some chairs and boxes (never unpacked) in that room and the echo went away immediately. So maybe I don't even need to get fancy... But yea, if the echo is bad when I move back in, I'll get to do the geodesic acoustic panels.
@plucaschina
@plucaschina 8 ай бұрын
@@SimonHomeintheEarth Years ago when I occasionally consulted for architectural acoustics, I had simple three-principle rule of thumb for solving acoustics issues, 1) Reduce (eliminate sources of sound, for example, eliminate a noisy hardwood floor that people walk on), 2) Disperse (reflect the sound away towards unused spaces, or break it up with rough surfaces or odd planes, and eliminate parallel planes, etc.) and 3) Absorb (strategically employ absorbent materials). The Absorb part was the most problematic.... different material thicknesses absorb different wavelengths, etc., and so the first two steps usually got a lot of attention.

Did you ever have any condensation from the ceiling inside during the humid months? its always cool to see update videos.....come so far!
@SimonHomeintheEarth
@SimonHomeintheEarth 9 ай бұрын
No, no condensation inside since we put the windows in. The spring before windows, the bedroom walls were very cold and we had a few hot humid days with no way to stop the humid air from getting to the walls, so we saw condensation. Now the house is well sealed, so the condensation happens in the earth tubes as the humid air is cooled. Once in the room, it warms up again (the house is warmer than the earth tubes) and the dew point drops so we don't see any condensation inside anymore. The one exception is inside that box just before the fan. So I need to redesign that this winter before it happens again next spring.

thats super good then, that would be my biggest concern with a earth home. Seems if well designed its way better than the homes everyone makes today. Awesome! @@SimonHomeintheEarth 👍

What if you had a heater in the air intake room or do you?
@SimonHomeintheEarth
@SimonHomeintheEarth 4 ай бұрын
Nope, no heater in the air intake room. I let the air come in after being warmed by the earth tubes and then just distribute it thru the house. If you are used to forced air being hot, you will find that you really enjoy having the air nice and cool (it feels fresher that way) and getting your warmth radiated from the floors and walls. Radiant heat from the concrete feels like sunshine on your skin rather than hot air in your lungs. Not heating the air also means the air stays at about 30 or 40% humidity all winter (heating air dries it out), so we didn't get dry skin or electric shocks like we did in the previous house.
