No! Don't stop the channel. Please don't. I've been watching Bjørn Nyland's videos in Thailand, where he has recently bought an MG ZS EV. If you've been following him for some time, you'll know he has previously bemoaned the lack of EVs in Thailand but he has been surprised by a dramatic change in EV adoption and infrastructure over the last half year or so. Denmark seems part way there with its bicycles and outdoor culture. Maybe it can also suddenly change to embrace EVs.

Thanks. A shift in policy and pricing could make a huge difference here. As would availability of midway bike-car hybrids I think. I’ve been very impressed that people happily ride around here on things that back in the UK would seem... oddball... to say the least :)

Thank you for all your considered and intelligent views on the zero tailpipe agenda. There was a high degree of synchronicity with your channel and the needs I had for 2019. As a result of your channel, I bought a Hyundai Ioniq, (it’s great), put solar on the roof, a battery in the garage, and then changed the second car for a second hand leaf. You have helped another family make a significant life change. Stick to your positive view of the need for change for the better. Heartfelt thanks.

Thoughts on a few of your points. 1: You are absolutely right about the price of second hand EVs. I've been following the price of 2nd hand Zoe's for about two years now and they haven't budged. Great if you own one but a little dispiriting if you're struggling to justify the price. 2: I bet the full suspension version of your bike is NOT cheap. Have you thought about bolting a suspension seat post in? Quick, cheap option. You could probably add a suspension fork as well but that would be a bit more technical. 3: Please don't think about stopping the channel. I started watching for the electric cars but I find the 'alternative transport' pieces just as interesting. You have your own niche there talking about bikes without being a MAMIL :). Hope you have a wonderful new year and a great year to come.

E bikes are fine. What's not so fine is the infrastructure in the UK, where bikes have no dedicated lanes outside of the city and you are forced onto the road to compete with vehicles travelling at twice or three times the speed. In fact some roads don't even have pedestrian access barely within a few hundred metres of a major conurbation in London, again directly discouraging people from cycling, walking or scootering and forcing them onto overpriced privatised trains if they don't have a car. Case in point. Try and walk, cycle or scooter along the A3113 from Heathrow airport towards Horton for instance. Not possible. It's like the activity of cycling and walking has been specifically prohibited. We are being divorced from the natural world by transport engineers. That I find profoundly troubling.
@ZeroTailpipe5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. 20+ years ago I walked from John O’Groats to Land’s End. I remember being shocked by the state of patchy pavements and bizarre intermittent cycle lanes. It’s truly a country engineered to prefer car drivers’ needs over most things. I watched a video from the ‘cycling professor’ recently. He was reading a book that said transport ‘engineering’ is just a lot of social choices disguised as a science. I resonated with that perspective :)

Duncan - keep doing your Denmark lifestyle videos. To me I’d think it would be most difficult to completely drop a car from your daily life, and pick up bicycle transport in it’s place. For 6 plus months, you’ve stayed committed to just that. You’ve demonstrated to your audience some “near car like” transportation options we may never have been exposed to. I recently visited a 55+ retirement community in Florida, USA, and although there was only one EV observed during my stint at this location, there were many electric “golf cart” runabouts, and several hybrid electric bicycles in use there too. With our low fuel cost, there’s little incentive to buy an EV. EV adoption is slowly taking hold in the US, and the path to EV adoption may begin by a seemingly expensive bicycle purchase, the performance of which then makes people even more curious. If we can get younger generations headed down this path, we’ll have a start on the masses getting interested in EVs, but, other than Tesla, there’s not significant commitment by the fossil OEMs until the paying customers show up. 2020 will start that trend. Here’s to a great 2020 for you and all of your viewers - cheers!

Thanks for your videos in 2019. Your channel has a role in covering the wider EV transport options rather than just electric cars. Your choices are relevant to any modern city, and will become more so through 2020 and beyond as more cities modernise to reduce smog and congestion. It will be interesting to see how your transport options work out in 2020. Will you get through the winter on your bike? After the initial cost of the cargo bike will you be able to save up a larger deposit for the Model 3 or even keep biking without monthly car payments until you can afford a Model Y family hatchback.

I might risk to double my words or be annoying, however I will take the risk to write down the positive points about PHEVS vs EVs and vs ICEs. 1. No range anxiety. 2. Assuming most people charge at home and/or at work, the range of PHEV is 25-30 miles or 35-50 km then looking at statistics worldwide most day commute and errand trips will be done as EVs. 3. The manufacturers and dealerships can be easy on board since PHEVs do not threten to cut off quickly their business model, their income, and they will not have to lay off so many employees. 4. However the dealerships will be there when one need some service and not like in case of Tesla the need for customers to wait for months to get something fixed. 5. It is much easier to have a full variety of sizes and body shapes to accomodate all the customers (today most EVs have certain body shapes with a very limited choice).6. It is easier to lure an existing customer or a new one who decided to buy one of those gasoline guzzling SUVs or trucks into the same shaped vehicle namely a PHEV one rather than trying to convince him/her to buy a full BEV.7.PHEV can use electricity mostly home and do not need public infrastructure to charge. 8. In a PHEV nobody is going to stay in line waiting for a fast charger to be freed up then to charge like it already happens is South East USA during holidays when too many EVs are heading in the same direction south to Florida.9.PHEVs depreciate faster and have the chance to create much faster a second hand market for people who cannot afford a new plug in vehicle.10.Most local jurisdictions already started to restrict ICE vehicles due to pollution but PHEVs will be able to gap both worlds. 11. Private trucks as in the USA as in Australia or developing countries are very popular. They are used to tow with a dismay fuel economy. In order to have torque and range and tow they are preferred with Diesel engines. Planned to manufacture today EV trucks will have a very limited range while towing. In order to avoid discreditation of EV trucks for the future PHEVs could have the needed torque from electric motor and range from PHEV.12. In the USA and in other places some families have several vehicles including a small EV for commute and a gas guzzling huge SUV or truck for family needs. A PHEV can be used instead of those 2 vehicles. It is environmentally friendly to build less vehicles rather then more when the redundant vehicle is parked 90% of the time and used occasionally. Happy New Year to everybody.

I really missed your videos so much Duncan! Please keep going if you feel it is appropriate for you and your family. For me in Australia 2019 was the year of the EV. We bought two. An Ioniq electric : thanks to you and then a Tesla Model 3 later in the year. Both these cars are great and only became available here at the end of 2018 for the Ioniq and in August 2019 for the Model 3. You sold us the Ioniq and by the experience of loving the electric driving in the Ioniq but wanting longer range ( Australia!!!) the Ioniq sold us the Model 3. The Ioniq replaced our Prius and the Model 3 replaced our Outlander PHEV. Our Model 3's towbar arrives on Monday so as Scout Leaders we will be able to tow with the Model 3 to replace that function carried out by the Outlander. So my dear viseo friend you are responsi=ble for us spending a great deal of money on EVs this year,. We are not wealthy AT ALL 9especuially now, but I thank you very sincerley. I also thank you very much for covering and convincing me about electric cycling. Thanks to you, my new hip and a talk from my orthopaedic surgeon, I am now the proud owner of a new electric bike! I got one in December. I'll be riding it over very hilly Sydney terrain and along a river, 37km in total, to enjoy a coffee with my other 60 plus year old cycling mates early tomorrow morning, before the 45C day hits us in our suburb. Now wemay have bought EVs this year without your channel, but Zero Tailpipe most definitely gave us the confidence to go ahead and get the Ioniq. It is a great car just as you showed us. And you have changed the way we drive and reduced our carbon footprint. Truly. So for this particular household, 2019 was undoubtedly the best and most significant year for EVs we are ever likely to have. I can only heartily recommend the Model 3. We have the Long Range AWD and were upgraded to the Stealth Performance for free. It is astounding. The shorter range versions will be far more than adequate in Europe but the concept of towing a trailer loaded high with 6 canoes off road In Australia was a very different proposition so we really grasped that thistle. It may still be too big a challenge for the Model 3. We'll see.

Very well said... Spot on with your assessments.And wishing you and your family a very good 2020. I have an e-bike. The use of it has been such a positive experience that I have suddenly realised how uneasy I feel about my combustion engine car. I am lucky that with some tough decision making I have been able to place an order for a new Kia e-Niro. When it will be delivered, I dont know! I did wonder if I should maybe leave it for five years or so, to wait for battery technology and charging infrastructure to move on...But there's no guarantees in life! We need positive incentives from our government for EV adoption. I would much rather see our money spent on the air we breathe than say, £150 billion on the high speed train 2 project.

Agree in general with your thoughts on the EV market. A couple of observations I would like to add: charging infrastructure still poor in the UK limiting the appeal for long journeys; poor supply is probably bolstering second hand values and this could be reversed if supply increases. I am currently half way through a 4 month wait for a 38kWh Ionia which was the only usable EV available for an affordable to me lease cost.

There is one more mobility option - to have a monthly or early subscription to a company providing a car when needed. I saw a video on Fullycharged channel in London. It is based on VW golf EV. Access to lock/unlock the car goes via smartphone app. The actual ignition key is to be stored in glove compartment. In Netherlands this kind of service used to be for ICE cars delivered to doorstep when needed. Payment is both based on time the car is used and the distance traveled in the vehicle. In Norway it gets better and better. Hope more will have the same choices/opportunities as we have here in Norway. I know that production will increase from more car companies. Audi, VW, Hyundai, Kia, Tesla and BMW are really talking about a real increase in production of EVs. Don't know what that will do with prices, but it will at least make 2nd hand cars more chearper, because waiting lists for new EVs will decrease, I guess. EVs all together are over 40% of the entire sales in Norway, in the cities about 50% of the sales. Most sold cars was Tesla Model 3, VW e-golf (very cheap now as it's getting discontinued) and Nissan Leaf.

Sadly my 2017 Leaf 30 has not done well with depreciation. We bought it at the end of our 2 year PCP for less than it would retail for. Bargain, I thought! However, its lost around 30% of its value in less than a year because there's a huge glut of these cars coming off PCP schemes. That's encouraging people not to pay the final fee to keep them, so putting even more cars on the market. End result, we're stuck with the Leaf because it's worth so little and replacements are SO expensive..

There was talk about introducing several hundred H-busses to get experience… I think Herning, Ålborg... in København they test Electric busses on somelines. Not sure about Århus; you could check with Sporvejene. I have noticed on public busses and light trains dedicated equipment to load the bicycle as luggage while the rider becomes a passenger. It is extremely convenient for bridging the gap between home and bigger bus station from one standpoint, then from downtown bus station and work place from another5. Do you have regular light bicycles to be used this way in Denmark or you just have your bigger cargo EV assisted bike to do all the travelling autonomously? That use of public transportation and bike is very useful in very cold weather when long distance commute on the bicycle is very difficult to achieve like here in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. If the bus or rail is electric, then no matter which bike you have, a regular or EV motor assisted, you remain with zero tailpipe emissions anyway. Please share that experience in a video or many more. Thanks.

Thanks. Lots of restrictions about taking bikes - let alone my big cargo bike - on public transport here sadly... no doubt due to large numbers of cyclists would make it very challenging to offer that service... storage space. @@ZeroTailpipe Here in Minneapolis Minnesota USA the situation with bicycle trails is pretty much like in Denmark - they are everywhere and dedicated to non motor vehicles. They are cleared of snow like public roads also in the same day. Also here is the same love of still mostly Diesel public busses and private ICE cars, SUV, trucks. However in the city there are lines serviced by electric busses. There are 2 long lines of electric light rail. However the regular near city trains including passenger one are Diesel. There are plenty of Teslas on the road. Other EVs are not so many, except BMW i3, and some PHEV such as Chrysler Pacifica PHEV, Ford C Max Energy PHEV, Ford Fusion Energy PHEV, Chevrolet Volt. Some folks ride in this subfreazing weather bikes with very fat tires. I hope over there in Denmark close to Copenhagen where you moved is not so cold for cycling. Hi Duncan I check every few days to see if you've released another video. I love your style and reflections. Of course I know you may one day decide not to continue, but I hope it's not yet. Any hints? About to start my first 200 km trailer trial using the Tesla Model 3 we've fitted ourselves with a post market trailer kit.Needed to adapt the wiring and towball because Australian and US ones don't match. Such is life. Tesla hasn't released their towing kit in Australia yet. My first step is a trip up into our local Blue Mountains ( hills really about sea level to 1000m) with no trailer to establish some base line energy use levels. Taking my little dog for company. I am curious to know where you are up to in your reflections and plans. And I often wonder what your dear wife thinks about the transport choices available for herself and the children since you have sold the Ioniq, especially in the cold and dark Danish Winter. Of course I completely get that she may not want that revealed in any way whatsoever. My question comes from a Sydney perspective: different weather indeed! I'm sensing a change in the narrative for EVs, (although it may be that I actually misunderstood originally) but whereas I believed the idea was to clean up the environment, it seems now that they are presented as just different better cars, forget the clean aspect. This is allowing the manufacturers to basically ramp up the purchase prices without having to explain why they're profiteering off the back of saving the environment that they polluted in the first place, and obviously keeping their profits up - I mean, a corsa for £35k ??? - and unfortunately, I suspect we're seeing the start of a scenario where the bottom 10 or 15% of working/pensioned people actually won't be able to afford anything more than a 10 year old wreck, with a shot battery !!

Please, go on with the broader perspective. There is almost nothing else like that. We also need continued focus on the lower priced ev’s. They should come in large numbers in 2020 following the changed EU regulation. Finally, I love the pictures from Århus where I lived in the late 80’s.

I wonder if it would be possible to ban all cars but allow millions of taxis 35 million privately owned cars could be replaced with 5 million taxis which would be hybrids or EVs A combination of far more efficient hybrids and EVs and fewer miles driven and higher mileage thanks to lower traffic and some sharing of the taxis like Uber pool would all combine to result in a reduction of energy for transportation of probably around two thirds Something like this could be tried within the M25. 3 million London cars might become just 300,000 London taxis

Interesting perspective, thanks. I wonder where the trends will go now people may be hesitant to share vehicles because of the pandemic...

@@ZeroTailpipe The Covid will be a distant memory in a few years time. The thing with cars is they have a low marginal cost and high upfront costs. A person invests a huge amount in a car and for insurance etc but then it's just 10p a mile for fuel so there is an incentive to overuse cars. So much so that people sometimes even 'just go for a drive' and drive 20-30-40 miles around just to drive An average private car costs perhaps £4,000 a year or ~50p a mile. But the marginal cost being 10p a mile means once all the big costs are paid drive all you like If private cars were banned (or limited in number) and everyone used taxis the price might be perhaps as low as 90p a mile. I just did a Uber search and it came out to £75 for a 45 mile trip = 1.66 per mile but Uber takes 30% knock that off and it's £1.16 a mile but like with everything if the market grows prices fall so knock 20% more off and it's 90p a mile It would be a fascinating experiment for a big city like London to greatly limit car ownership. Maybe from 3.5 million cars today limit the number to 350,000 private cars (maybe via an auction) and 350,000 TFL taxis. That is -80% cars Public transport use would boom Walking would boom Cycling would boom E-scooters would boom The huge number of renters (~50% of the population) in London would reorder themselves to live closer to work And of course unnecessary trips would mostly go away Overall the number of car miles driven in London would go down significantly I would imagine by at least two thirds. The emmissions would go down a lot more still because it can be 350,000 E-Taxis and 350,000 mix of hybrids and e-cars Jobs would boom as well +300,000 full time positions as taxi drivers In fact if TFL owned the taxis and ran it as public transport each electric taxi could be used by 3 drivers working 40 hours per week each Everyone imagines cars all jump on the roads to get to work and then again to go home but car use is actually quite high during the day from around 6am to 9pm as can be seen by standing on any busy London road and observing I don't think London is brave enough to run this experiment. Maybe a smaller city like Birmingham or another city in Europe

No, you should continue your channel - it is striking a nerve amongst all those of us who are is in this middle position when only driving or only bicycling or even only going by public transport is not optimal, though we wish to be enviromentally friendly. Now we have followed you this far on your journey, we want to se where it all goes. Good luck! My opinion is btw. in hindsight, that you should never have sold your Ioniq, even though it has the steering wheel on the wrong side. The Ioniq has lane warnings and blind zone warning, meaning it would probably been a matter of getting used to. Most likely, there are tax rules that would have let you bring the car without too much costs, when it is part of your moving to another country. Both GB and DK were member of the EU at the time of moving, so most likely, warranty should apply etc. although there might have been paperwork and hazzle to register it by Hyuandai in Denmark. I know it is too late, but just saying, as your experiece now, is that electric cars are too difficult/expencive to get in your situation now, hopefully others will think twice before selling a car that is difficult to get back in another country.

Thanks. You could be right. There was also the issue of cash flow. It was good to have the extra buffer of cash at the time of moving to meet the (many!) expenses I’ve faced :)

Thanks for sharing your EV 'journey' during the last year. I hope you can continue with the ZTp channel's broadening transport perspective. The EU starts it's stick and carrot EV incentive scheme this year, which is why so many new EVs will be available in 2020. For every EV sold, the maker gets 1.7 green points which can be offset against ICE car production. This goes down to 1.2 in year two and is 1 for 1 in year three of the scheme. Green points can be pooled and manufacturers are pairing up. Tesla have paired with Fiat Chrysler. So, as Tesla makes only green cars, they will benefit from FC buying their green points. The stick is financial penalties if the total pollution count exceeds a threshold after green points are deducted. Short supply and long lead times for EV s in 2019 are partly explained by this EU scheme, as makers want as many green points as possible in 2020. It's a crude scheme, but it may increase EV ownership and put pressure on national charging network expansion. Loving your wraparound headgear! Happy New Year.

Thanks for explaining! I was wondering what the EU change was :)
@zagan14 жыл бұрын
It's odd, I think there's so many people that keep saying Tesla is the best and only one that makes EVs. But the biggest ev maker and seller is Toyota with 1.7 million EVs sold. Pretty much all the current car makers are already at or passing Tesla in terms of EV sales and production. It's so brain washed it's actually crazy to think Nissan is at 400,000 EVs sold also more cars sold than Tesla in total. So don't discount brands that will be causing big problems for Tesla before 2025. As Hyundai are expecting to be selling 1.5 million EVs a year by 2025, they have 16 EV models whereas Tesla only has 2 EVs

What about EV's such as: Renault Zoe 50, then coming in 2020/21 will be: Honda e, VW ID.3, SAIT version of Id.3(Id.3 chassis & powertrain/battery), maybe check out EVM(Electric Vehicle Man's) recent vid on the new models coming in 2020 suspect there may be something there that could suit and isn't a Tesla. But then why couldn't you go to the UK or Belgium or Norway and buy a 2nd hand EV there and import it into Denmark if Denmark are so useless on their EV's currently? For me personally 2019 was a great year for EV's as I finally got one, the one you sold Hyundai Ioniq which I will always credit Fully Charged & Bjorn for selling me on. Plus of course you for teaching me how to drive/use it after I had gotten it. :) Finally, please don't end your channel I have been watching you since I found you and taught me many things about my own Ioniq that I've only had now since April last year although not cheap it was the cheapest one I could afford here and 100x better than my old 2003 car that probably would have killed me had I been in an accident with it unlike the 5 star EuroNCAP rated Ioniq. I am leasing it over 5yrs though but means everything is taken care of from insurance to servicing to registration. Today I decided to go for a drive about 145km loop with a stop at one of the few, only 3 so far, 50kW fast chargers where I live but more are coming along with 350kW ones. Whatever you do don't give up on an EV again, I'm sure there are ways and means of getting back into one even if it's not a Tesla, for me a Tesla is out of my price range maybe in 4years or so when my lease is coming up there may be some 2nd hand Model 3, or Model Y or maybe even the Ford Mach E(which I personally love the look of) as options even though my dream would be the Rivian R1T as it will be perfect for beekeeping(one of my hobbies), as so far at least few EV's that can tow with well here in Australia anyway or affordable ones I should clarify.

It looks like you are getting by without a car so far. Do you rely on public transportation or your electric assisted bike cover all your needs? How is your wife coping with her transportation needs? Have you enquired if the weather will allow you to transport the kids with just your bike or later in the winter you will rely on public transportation? And by the way electric busses are mostly common in China and in some parts of Eastern Europe. In Eastern Europe those are mostly trolleybusses which recently started to be fitted with batteries allowing them to travell out of wired ares thus being like electric busses but without need to charge and waste their time, since returning in wired areas of the city they use wires and on the way charge the battery. Those trollybusses were vry common in the beginning of XX centuty in UK, USA but now even streetcars are rediscovered as dedicated light rail lines. Even in Norway not too many public busses are fully electric as far as I know.
