Paul McCartney has stated that it is highly unlikely he will ever write a conventional autobiography. The Lyrics, then, stands as the defining literary statement of Britain’s most influential living songwriter. To celebrate it as Waterstones Book of the Year, he spoke with James Daunt about his Liverpool childhood, looking back on The Beatles and how this presentation of his songs sheds a whole new light on him personally and the world that surrounded him.

I'll never forget one night in 1964 in Hamilton, Ontario when I was doing my usual late night radio surfing on my parents big console set that at night was able to clearly tune in well over 200 radio stations from all over N. America. It had one of those big plastic dials with a giant lead weight behind it. That night every single station, all 200 plus, were playing a Beatles record all at the same time at the moment I was surfing. To be sure to what I was listening, I reversed the process from the other end of the dial and got the same result. No other recording artist in history can claim that I believe, nor will they in the future. In 300 years, people will still be listening to the Beatles.

Fame did get to them, but as they've all said, at least they had each other. Elvis was on his own, but the four Bealtes were able to support each other through what must at times have been hell. Their humble upbringings helped a lot too. Sadly, John didn't cope as well, due in large part to his childhood trauma and insecurity, which was one factor leading to them splitting up as a band. But they still all loved each other. So much to learn from these guys!

Not sure what to make of this. Annabelle, Jane, Julian ....... I think the take away is Paul is a stellar guy. I appreciate his early loss of his mother and his trials and tribulations. I too walked that path. I then rebounded, appreciated, loved and carried on. To my chagrin that came to a sudden end when my amazing 38yr old husband died suddenly of an aneurism. My challenge is I didn't have the backing, money not the acknowledgement that Paul had. I think he gets it. He loves his family and he is grateful. We don't call the shots, but we must be grateful. God Bless youmandm Nancy as you carry on , appreciate one and other as you carry on. Your mother is proud and your father is a hero is for carrying on. God Bless you one and all; pray for me and mine and as you travel on your way. We are on it together.

James Paul McCartney died in car crash on September 11 1966. Brian Epstein with the consent of the authorities at the time and the three Beatles, he decides to replace Paul with a right-handed session musician named William Shepherd. Everyone involved, including their families, vowed to keep everything a secret. However, The Beatles produced over a hundred clues about Paul's death in their albums and images. William underwent numerous cosmetic surgeries to resemble Paul. William is two inches taller than Paul, William has green eyes, William has a weaker and thinner voice than Paul, William has totally different manners. Musically, Paul was a genius, William is just a good musician.
