Watto in Phantom Menace is genuinely one of the best implementations of a CGI character in the history of film. He looks real. Had they not pissed everyone off with Jar Jar first, methinks Watto would've been much more fondly remembered.

if we really think about it, Watto was not a bad owner all things considered, he won Schmi and Anakin from the hutts, ANYTHING is better than the Hutts. Not to mention, he kept them fed, they had their own rooms and freetime, its not like he whipped and abused them, he didn't even work them to the Bone like other Slave owners would. He may be slimey and rude, but thats really just Tattoine in a nutshell.

And so did the Hutts, Dugs, and many other species. Aside from slaves Tatooine was worthless. It had no natural resources, no minerals, no vegetation, next to no water, and wasn't close to any trade routes. It's only value was that of it's space ports and it's remoteness. Which is why it was used to run drugs and many other illicit things banned in the republic/empire. As bad slavery is the main reason it was used was because simply no one wanted to live there.

@@samt7676 it is literally jedi code to not kill those that are unarmed, and not to kill out of revenge or aggression. even if they were willing to violate the jedi code, they will still have a number of problems, most notably the hutt crime syndicate hunting them down. not to mention, both anakin and his mother had transmitter chips inside of their bodies that could explode if they went far enough away from where they are supposed to be, possibly making the entire operation futile anyways.

When I first knew Watto he didn’t seem that bad to me. Like he never treated Aniken like a slave, but rather like his own student and employee , who is working with him for money. He never abused him. He never restrained his limits a bit longer. At least last thing he did for him was dismissed him like school is over. And the truth is the only one who is the true slave abusers none other than Darth Sidious. At least he serves as a dark foil to him.

Watto beat Anakin when he was three or four for displeasing him. There is also a part in the novelisation of revenge of the sith where Anakin mentions watto punching him. He also risked anakins' life in the pod racing and only dismissed him because of the bet he made with Qui-gon

Slavery is an economic system first and foremost, usually there isn't that much abuse so much as the denial of mobility. It might not seem bad to an outsider but it absolutely destroys the mind not being able to think or do anything except what someone else wants. Slavery in real life often looked more like Watto but was just as destructive as Sidious. Anakin's mental instability BEFORE he fully turns is actually pretty accurate.

Even if you don't count the novel as cannon, watto is definitely not just a "misfit." he was a slave owner. In the Clone Wars tv show (which is cannon). There are a few moments where you can see anakin struggling with his past as a slave. It doesn't matter that watto cared for anakin because he still used him for profit, risked his life podracing, kept his mother as a slave etc...
