Can you put gradient colours in the pattern?

You can - I just tried this for you. I dropped gradients into everyone of the shapes behind the lines - I used a couple of alternating gradients and then made the pattern and it worked just fine. I actually didn't expect it to work. I thought I'd have to expand the gradient but, at least in Illustrator CC 2022 it works just fine and it's pretty cool too.
