Just a question: Are you working together with Mark Brown? Both channels look pretty the same: Channel name is their real name, both have an additional name (Waveform, Game Makers Tool Kit), The build up of the videos is similar and both are about showing the audience what makes good games good. He specializes in gameplay and gamemechanics and game design as well, while you focus on sound design. Dont take this as "you are a copy of his channel", i love both ones! You guys create really great youtube content! And you help me a lot! I'm just an hobby indie dev, but you teach also not programming audience a lot about games! Thank you very much for this!!! And btw: if you are not working together with him, maybe try to do a collaboration? Mark doesn't seem like he woudn't collaborate with someone who has less than 10% of his subs like many youtube would do. I'm sure he will like your work as everyone does and since both of you work on the same topic and aim, but with different focus and point of view, this could become a very interesting then ;) And of course this could give you the audience you deserve ;) (btw, found your channel just today, but I looked for years for something like this, thank you very much!)

I have never met or spoken with MB, save for very quickly on twitter one time. But I’d LOVE to do a video with him. Maybe if enough people tweet at him we could make it happen but yeah he has much bigger fish to fry than me right now haha. I definitely wouldn’t be helping him out much.

Hey Marshall, I was curious do you do all of your audio design in Live? I notice that it seems to be your DAW of choice. The reason I ask is because I'm a sound designer as well. I work for Fox Sports as well as side projects in indie films when I can get em. I've been a Pro Tools guy since '98, and my home studio is PT and Logic. But I've recently been thinking of getting into Live, but was reluctant because it seemed to be performance based. But in watching your videos it seems to lend itself to post as well. Also, as a designer for video games do you also have to know Unity or Wwize or do you just handle the sound design and pass it off? Thanks for your videos and insights.

Great qs all around. Firstly with Live: Yeah I use live at work almost exclusively now unless I’m working on something that needs like 200 variations or a bunch of tiny samples like footsteps. Because those are much easier to batch export in Reaper than they would be in Live. So I use reaper where live’s strengths lack. I’ve also found live’s video export options to be less than stellar quality, so if I’m working to video for an episode of Waveform, I export the wav from live, and then remarry it to picture in like final cut or something. Not a huge hinderance. With that being said I have not had the chance to try the video exporting in Live 10. They could have very easily made big improvements to video exporting for all I know! Hope that answers your q. For post sound I just think the live workflow is unbeatable.

It does. I think it's time for me to make the leap from Live Lite to Live 10 Suite. Lastly, the part on Unity or Wwize... I would love to start working in the gaming world, and with VR and all that's going on with 360, Ambisonics, and ATMOS it's just a great time to be doing what we do. In your opinion do you think my not knowing those engines would prohibit me from finding work in gaming?
@MarshallMcGee6 жыл бұрын
You know I’m probably not the best person to ask about that as I mostly got into AAA game sound design through an internship opportunity which let me learn the tools on the job. I’d highly recommend downloading an engine like unity though and replacing all the sfx with one of the demo game projects. That’s what I did to get a grip on what game engine work was like before coming to work at Avalanche. The tools are constantly changing in the game industry so it’s important to try to stay on top of things for sure.

I played through it when it came out and tbh I just wasn’t a fan of the actual game itself. I think the dialog and how dynamic the conversations feel is pretty amazing, but the story and the gameplay were pretty bland to me. I’m not tryna push boxes and climb ladders 1/2 the time ya know.
