Miku's never underestimated by fans. Everyone loves Miku and she's improving so quickly as a guitar player to the extent that she plays mini solo in Sayonakidori (the latest miku song, very unique and I think it's proggy too). I think Saiki is the one who's often underappreciated or overlooked. Talking of Miku song, "Time" is another great song, and still is my favorite Miku song. "Rock in me" is another classic.

I marvel at where Miku started with her group "Lil' Cumin" (There are some live videos and a music video) trying to break into the Idol Group scene and where she is now. I think Miku is the glue that keeps everything together, the other band members remark that inside, Miku is a "Middle Aged Business Man".

Sai-chan has ofter referred to ko bato as a little old man inside Miku. And that is what she means. In her song "l Still Seek Revenge" it doesn't take a genius to figure out who she wants revenge on and for small pigeon that revenge means becoming the biggest and best hard rock band working anywhere on the planet today. And if she and her co-conspirators gain that measure of success revenge will be complete. Regards. Sacramento loves Band-Maid.

They did some interviews as Band-Maiko. They basically acted as if they were rivals to Band-Maid. They had new names, and their own character work (kind of like a wrestling persona). The interviewers would be like "Do you know your song sounds like this other band?" and Miku would answer in character as a member of the opposing band. They went all out. Last April Fools wasn't a Band-Maiko offering, sadly. But happily, we got something we didn't know we wanted. Miku making her own solo project Cluppo, with her one song from it "Peace and love". There's your chance to see Miku in lead, though she has done some Band-Maid songs as the lead vocals. "Rock in me", "Time", and the newest "Sayonakidori".

Hello Wave. I'm so glad that someone suggested this to you. Secret Maiko Lips just might be my favorite thing the ladies have done. It seems they always have fun whenever they perform but I get the feeling that the girls had considerably more fun than usual with Secret Maiko Lips. Visually, Secret Maiko Lips is a five minute bowl of eye candy. Every one of the ladies look absolutely stunning in their Kimonos and full traditional makeup. (I read somewhere that the combined value of the Kimonos is between $65,000 - $70,000 US) Each kimono was selected specifically and fitted for each of the girls. Apparently it takes about 40 minutes, and two assistants to correctly put on a kimono. Then there's the makeup. Everything about the Maiko video is a pristine example of some Japanese artform. Sonically, it's a masterpiece. If you give it another listen you will hear that the traditional instruments aren't just playing along with the contemporary instruments. Kanami wrote parts for each instrument to play around, over, and between the modern instruments. Miku rewrote parts of the lyrics throughout the song specifically for this video. This wasn't a case of one of them 'getting a wild hair' and throwing something together. It was absolutely an artistic endeavor every step of the way, and a labor of love for the fans. I do not know what the production budget was, but I'm sure it was more than I'll make in the next few years. I have watched this video many times, and I still enjoy it as much as the first time. BTW, since you seem to be genuinely interested in this sort of thing, please consider doing a review on this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZOsaGybas6NgdU Not quite Judus Priest, maybe Buddhist Priest. I think you'll like it. 😏 Thanks again for doing what you do. I'm having a blast. PS: it is pronounced; May-Ko, like the shark.

According to Kanami, the traditional Japanese instruments in this recording were "sampled" instruments, and not performed by actual musicians. For this recording, a technician did all the programming of the traditional instruments, but Kanami being a "quick learner" did the programming work herself at the next April Fool's recording.

@@bob2161 Here are 2 articles where Band-Maid (as Band-Maiko) has given interviews after they have released a mini-album as Band-Maiko titled "Band-Maiko", with 6 "re-arranged" songs (all with Traditional Japanese instruments) and one new original song "Gion-Cho". This mini-album was released a year after their first April Fool song "Secret Maiko Lips". Unfortunately, the article is in Japanese. www.barks.jp/news/?id=1000165741 natalie.mu/music/pp/bandmaiko/page/2 Further Notes: As Geikos are given new names as entertainers, the members have also given themselves "Maiko (like) Names" when they are being Band-Maiko. Miku Kobato → Hatoko (鳩子), Kanami → Kanoemi (叶笑) , Saiki → Fujiki (富士姫), Misa → Umemisa (梅美沙), Akane → Akatsuki (紅月) After reading these articles, it seems my memory was a bit shady. The sound Engineer "Assisted" Kanami in inputting the traditional instruments rather than doing the whole work himself.

Something that doesn't get mentioned enough about Miku is that she is also the main writer in most of the songs lyrics, specially in the later albums. Those catchy choruses mainly come from Miku's creative brain. She has mastered the way to make the lyrics flow with Kanami's compositions and fuse seamlessly with not a word out of place. Even fans that don't know any Japanese can appreciate the skill in her lyric writing. Everyone in this band is absolutely amazing at what they do. How this magical fusion happened where they all came together in one band is nothing short of miraculous.

Ya, I agree with Jay. Check out "cluppo". They did not do a BAND-MAIKO for 2021 -- instead, Miku decided to create a new genre called "hippie-poppo" and created a side projected called "cluppo" (small "c"), and released a song "Peace and Love" for the 2021's April Fools "joke"! I put joke in quotes because the song is better than 95% of pop songs out there -- when a joke is not a joke. :P

Secret Maiko Lips isn’t simply Secret My Lips overlaid with some traditional Japanese instruments. Miku actually rewrote the lyrics into the old Kyoto dialect of the Geishas, and they rearranged some parts so they just re-recorded it all. All in order to deliver the perfect April Fool’s Day surprise! They also announced they were taking a new direction and changed their name and social media for 24 hrs to Band Maiko, then changed everything back the following day! Such dedication to a plan.💪🏻🤘🏻

You can clearly see in the Thrill MV where Miku is holding her Rickenbacher! Kanami told Miku that if she’s gonna hold a guitar she might as well learn how to play it! Could someone please check if we have a new record for pauses in a reaction video here? I have a feeling about it. 😂 But to be honest, I didn't expect it any other way with this song. Simply an awesome track with a lot of details. And the cover by the lovely Maikos adds a good dose of spice to the whole thing. This is so much more than a simple April Fool's joke. With all the talent that has come together in this group, you would think that success would come by itself or is pre-programmed. But without Miku's idea and above all her willpower to fight for this project and to make sacrifices, we wouldn't be talking about B-M here today. Others have touched on this, but to sum it up... In the Kyoto region an apprentice geisha is known as a maiko. Band Maiko completely rewrote the lyrics in the song using the dialect of Kyoto. They take their April Fools seriously!! Also, in the beginning of Secret Maiko Lips, she is writing "World Domination". Oh, and the fan tossing is a traditional game called Tohsenkyo. As far as the traditional instruments go, my understanding is that being initially set up by a tech, Kanami learned how to sample the instruments and did the final work. If you hear sampling on any of their more recent music, Kanami is the one doing it.

A little noticed detail is that the lyrics and vocal performances are different between each version. Secret Maiko Lips has lyrics that more relate to the experience of a maiko or geisha, and are also written in the Kansai-ben dialect. The Kansai region includes Kyōto, the former imperial capital and a centerpiece of ::drumroll:: geisha and maiko culture. Not only are the lyrics different, but the overall accent is different. There’s no true analogy to an American accent/dialect, but it’s kinda like how punk bands sometimes end up emulating a British accent when singing, or if a band does a country-ish song they end up adopting a little twang in their voice. The Kansai dialect is as distinct from the Tokyo dialect as a New York accent is from a southern accent, and is easily recognizable to Japanese speakers. So this song has a distinct vocal shift that non-speakers rarely recognize. Just a bit of cool info to increase the overall appreciation

I am guessing that someone said this way below, so forgive me if this is redundant. While great as a standalone, this was released on 4/1/18 as an elaborate April Fools gag. As mentioned below, the following year they released the whole mini-album. It's beautifully produced. They translated the "covers" (all but 1 of the songs), I hear, into Kyoto dialect. Talk about attn to detail. Check it out!

I stumbled across this video which gives more of a closeup of what you were talking about in relation to rhythm guitar ala Miku. Plus showing her playfullness with the crowd at the start. PLUS some great footage of The Barefoot Bass Assassin. Unfortunately the sound is not great as it's filmed by a camera in the crowd with just the microphone in the camera. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZe8gqKNd9GGps0 .There's a couple of other videos from the same show out there too, worth a look. Really dig your reactions man.

Don't know if anyone said it before, but besides the instruments and costumes, they also changed the lyrics from standard/modern Japanese to Kyoto accent. It's even more apparent in their Maiko-original Gion-cho (Gion town, which is/was the Geisha district in Kyoto). Also, you've got to love the shot of Kanami playing in front of the illuminated Tokyo Tower.

Thanks again for another great reaction/analysis. The things you point out about Akane's drumming are especially valuable to me, since a lot of those subtleties are lost on me and I love learning about them. Also, since you're studying Japanese you'll learn this soon, but words don't generally end with a consonant (the exception is 'n' or ん). So "maid" spelled in Japanese is メイド, or meido (meh-ee-doh). It uses katakana instead of hiragana because it's a loan word from another language. Pronouncing "Band Maid" with those phonemes comes out Bando Meido, and now it rhymes with "Maiko". Just another level of effort they put into this "joke" project. :) Also, as someone else said, if you want to see more traditional Japanese instruments fused with rock/metal, then Wagakki Band is a must. People often start with a live performance of Homura + Akatsuki no Ito and I recommend it, too, because in the first song there is an absolutely killer shamisen solo. Anyway, thanks again for these fun and informative videos!

Now that you mention it, the drum fill starting as straight eighths or sixteenths and going into triplets (although I'm not totally sure right now if they're actual triplets or dotted-eighth/dotted-eighth/eighths) is kind of Akane trademark. I also have seen several reactors who know better refer to one-and-two, three-and-four patterns as triplets, which is misleading and confusing to non-musicians. Three eighth- or sixteenth-notes in quick succession, followed by a rest, are not really _triplets._ A rhythmical triplet is when one plays three notes, equally spaced, over the time that it would take to play two normal notes. So a sixteenth-note triplet would be three notes, each lasting one-third less than regular sixteenth-notes, played over the time that two regular sixteenth-notes would take. EDIT: Oh yeah, that Kanami solo at 8:39 (or really the composition behind it) is really cool because the four-note intro is the first bar of an eight-bar solo but sounds like an "extra" inserted bar, so when she starts the actual shredding part, you're _expecting_ one more bar of shredding at the end (at least if you haven't listened to it already) but instead suddenly find yourself in the slow-jam jazzy breakdown. There's no extra bar inserted, but you're still thrown off _twice,_ at the beginning and the end (if there was actually an extra bar, one would only be surprised once instead of twice because one's musical counter would reset at the beginning of the bar after the insert and not have to reset again). Or to look at it a different way, there _is_ an extra bar at the beginning but then Kanami does a seven-bar instead of the expected eight-bar solo to get the song back in time. And we can see an overlooked advantage of playing live to a click track: you can take any well-filmed performance and easily sync it to the studio version if the live audio didn't turn out well.

Nice!!. Band Maid knows how to enhance a masterpiece in an epic project. I no longer consider this as an April's Fools Day joke but as a side project. The amount of talent expended in transforming Band Maid into Band Maiko is simply staggering. The costumes, the ancient instruments added (composed by ... Kanami), the story on their website or social media profiles, the change of names, the publication of a seven-song EP ... Wonderful project. How many bands love their fans so much that they spare no effort to surprise them?
