This is the definitive version of Play! ♥ Don't care what anyone says this version just sounds vastly superior to all the other versions I've heard honestly MISA (bass), Kanami (guitar) & Akane (drums) could all make an argument for being the best at their respective instruments and to think that they're all in ONE band, is astonishing!

Yes, the mix is different than other versions of Play. It is fantastic! Every instrument and vocal is extremely clear. The sound engineer is the unsung hero! Each of the musicians part is clear, present, and articulate! It is an example of what every live performance should strive for.
@bob2161

I do not know who the sound engineer was for this show, but he or she needs some recognition. To pull off that mix, that clean, and LIVE no less! Extremely talented sound person. If you compare running a sound board, to playing an instrument, then this sound engineer is on the same level of mastery as the rest of the band. I've seen/heard 3 or 4 other songs from this same show, and the sound mix is excellent on each one.

Seems like they love making new intros for this song every time lol Some people don't like the 'lalala's in this chorus, BUT, using lalala and woawoawoa in a song is not easy (if you want to create a good song)! This was from the shinkiba coast show, and it has amazing sound mixing. It’s the same show that has (among other songs) Puzzle, moratorium, Take me higher (with the guitar and bass battle), daydreaming (with kanami’s piano intro), and non-fiction days to close the show, and the Zepp show has puzzle acoustic, anemone acoustic, another version of moratorium, onset, don’t you tell me (with the guitar and bass battle), and real existence. Both the shinkiba coast and Zepp Tokyo shows have miles better mixing, particularly for Kanami. You can actually hear what she’s doing, unlike the newer live shows. Miku’s vocals maybe get drowned out a bit. MISA and Akane however sound great all the time

Different intro for a different concert. Look for the song DON'T YOU TELL ME - Live version - epic battle between KANAMI and MISA! This whole concert is one 2 hour long song! MISA is picking at the beginning of this song and then switches to slap. From a radio interview - - (Chris): What amazed me most about your play style is the changing of picking to slapping, and then picking again so smoothly. Some bassists may throw their picks away to slap, but you use the same pick when you change from slapping to picking again, right? (Misa): No, I don't throw my pick away. I have become better as I practiced. For the recent 2-3 years, I haven't lost any pick. (Chris): Show me how. (Misa): I keep the pick with my index finger and palm. (Chris): Then you slap the bass with your thumb and middle finger? Can you show me how you play? (then Misa shows how) (Misa): Because I've been practicing these days, I can change faster than ever. (Chris): You are mixing them up! That's awesome! (Misa): I think anybody can do it if you practice. KANAMI asked Herman Li what the fastest song he plays (225bpm) Kanami stated that 220 was her fastest (BLACK HOLE) but she would write a song for 225bpm. Ok, I thought this one was about Misa. This entire performance is master class, however, Misa's bass was most definitely the key feature in this version of Play. Clearly, Misa had extra time, and extra material for herself. Her presence was also more 'front and center' than is her norm. She was very much 'on point' for one. Then, there's the part we can't see, but it's such a huge part of this performance. What the sound engineer did for her mix cannot be ignored. She was running her own effects, but the sound board did an outstanding job and made sure none of it got lost. And none of it went too far. I don't know if there is a name for Misa's sound for most of this song, but I can only describe it as 'Crunchewy'. It had the hard, crispy at the edges, and yet was rounded out and filled with a juicy, meaty, mid tone. She set her tempo and cadence to make the most of her sound. While Misa was featured here, and she did use at least two effects that we don't usually hear on this song, her performance was pretty much her normal level. Now don't get me wrong, hear me out. Misa's 'normal' is so far ahead of the ability of most bassists, each time she performs, it was the 'best ever'. And the next time she performs it will be even better than that. I believe that this particular performance is indeed a stand out example of her level of ability. The reason it stands out to us mortals is that this time, it was presented in an extra fancy sonic gift box. And I'm certain it was entirely intentional.

Uh, AKANE?????????
@bob2161
@bob2161 3 жыл бұрын
@@tommcfall1274 is that for me? Absolutely, Akane's performance in this video is second to none. She's a beast (of the best kind). She did put some extra sauce on her performance. And it was very much in support of Misa. Akane has the ability to back up her bandmates, and actually support their performance, raising it to a higher level, without stealing their thunder. It is a rare ability, and so few drummers are able to learn it, much less do it with Akane's unwavering consistency. Akane was absolutely performing at a stellar level during this show. If you watch any of the songs from this show, she was churning like an atomic clock, start to finish, with a big smile on her face. However, unless she was doing a solo, she never stole the spotlight from anyone. She shared it often, but never stole it. I have a theory about Akane. I'm not sure she is entirely human. She seems happiest when all five of them are at their best. To me, that speaks volumes about what kind of person she is. I believe that if you compare Akane to ALL other drummers that are presently performing, she will be at the top level of that group. If you compare her as a human being, she will again be in the upper level. To put it a different way. I believe that she is as good a person, as she is a drummer. These 5 ladies are Band-Maid. Honestly, the only member that is replaceable, is Saiki. Now before I get steam rolled, please hear me out. I have nothing against Saiki. I love her look, her vibe, and especially her voice. I am NOT suggesting in any way, that she needs to be replaced. What I am saying, is that there are other very talented female vocalists that COULD duplicate her performance, and it would still be Band-Maid. AGAIN, I'M NOT SUGGESTING THAT SAIKI NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. However, I have serious doubts that any of the other girls could be replaced by other musicians. Band-Maid just wouldn't be Band-Maid anymore. P.S. I love Saiki every bit as much as I love the other 4 ladies of Band-Maid. I have ZERO negative feelings or opinions for Saiki. Nothing but love. No room for hate.

If only Line Cube Shibuya's mixing was this good too. The new added part with Miku was a nice addition to the many intros of Play. Studio Coast and Zepp Tokyo are still some of the best live Band-Maid sound mixing.

You are not the only one to be really impressed with Ah-chan's drumming. Not sure if you knew this, but one of the times they played in London, Jimmy Page went back stage because he just had to meet that incredible drummer! High praise indeed. 👍🥁

Hi Wave, don't know if you know the channel but stumbled onto SeeDragon Guitar. Check it out. He does full guitar covers of BM songs, playing both Miku's and Kanami's parts on split screen. To my untrained ear it sounds pretty darn spot on. Figured you might enjoy it as well

The mix on this 2018 Zepp Tokyo concert kills the 2020 Shibuya World Domination concert DVD, you can actually hear the guitars on the Zepp mix. They should remaster the Shibuya concert...IMHO. I have the World Domination Shibuya DVD but I've actually watched this Zepp concert more just for the great mix. Akane is always a beast, and she so precise while hitting the skins hard. If you want to hear some fast singing, listen to "Beauty and the Beast" from the 2016 "New Beginnings" album. Unfortunately there are no "good" videos for the song and you'll have to listen to it off the CD. The fan vid from Mexico isn't bad but it's from a phone, so there's that.

I'm going to be in the minority and go with the Shibuya concert. Miku finally gets to show off her guitar chops in the opening call and response and it's awesome! I'll always go for performance over production or post-production, even if the sound isn't as good.

It is true that both venues will close Jan. 2022, but it is due to contract matters of property usage. All facilities in Palette-Town will close sequentially by Aug. 2022. Palette-Town is a amusement complex which includes Venus Fort (shopping mall), TOYOTA showroom, huge Ferris wheel, Zepp Tokyo etc. It is announced that the place will become a new complex with sports arena, hotels, shopping malls etc. I believe this schedule was fixed around in 2016 or so. Zepp have 2 more active venues in Tokyo (Divercity & Haneda). As for the Studio Coast, it was announced that they did not reach to an agreement for the property lease extension. This extension issue may include COVID matters, but at least not on the surface.

Yep. Learned that the hard way during the live stream performances. That sixth band member is missing. That's the crowd in the room so that Saiki and Miku can do call and response with them, and get them to keep the beat with their clapping. That band was so created for the live stage, and to work the crowd.

The mix on this whole concert is much more "raw" than the Feb 2020 post-produced mix from Shibuya. Technically, the Feb 2020 is probably "better" but the underproduced sound from this one (even with some of the mistakes) has more "feel" to it. Maybe it feels more like a "concert" than an "album".

The last time I saw US bands play this hard and this good live was Tom Petty, Springsteen, Prince, and (of all people) Garth Brooks. American rock bands are getting their sorry asses kicked by Japanese bands, female, male, and mixed. Why can't we have music like this in the US? The answer is we don't want to work, we have forgotten that music is fun, and we are tied to an idiotic formulaic way of making "music."
