Waveshaping explained

The reason why it sounds pretty much like bit depth reduction is because it is. Lower bit depths have less points that the wave position is snapped to. By using the waveshaper with such stair-like envelope, you snap the volume to fewer points. It's just a different user interface for the same maths behind.

Excellent! What I don't understand though, is why some waveshapers ask you to choose a waveform for the waveshaper. Absynth does this for example.

+adiosdaniel When you draw in a waveshaper you are making your own custom shape, in Absynth when you choose a sine shape in the waveshaper, it's essentially the same as drawing a sine wave in a waveshaper. It's just the kind of shape that the waveshaper applies to the signal.

+ARTFX STUDIOS I think you are right. The strange thing about Absynth is that using a sine wave as the waveshaper "map" is completely illogical. Using any waveform that goes up and down just makes no sense and will give you a very random, arbitrary distortion. E.g. with a sine wave map, a maximum positive input level will result in a near-zero output level. The Image Line waveshaper is far more logical, at least according to my limited understanding.

Could you explain how waveshaping relates to even and odd ordered harmonics?

It doesn't really matter if it's odd or even. Based on the levels of the input, new harmonics will be generated. As far as distortion strategy goes(in general), using more stepwise waveshaping results in more even harmonics whereas non-linear shaping adds odd ones. You place these shapes at the volume in the transfer curve where you want to introduce those harmonics. For example, if the fundamental of your saw wave is at -12db and your 2nd harmonic is at -24 db, if you place a stepwise wave shape at -18db on up, the fundamental will contribute its amplitude towards even harmonics at a starting amp of -24db to the fundamental but leave the 2nd harmonic intact (though maybe boosted or cut due to the phase and stepwise transfer of the fundamental)

Amplitude refers to the instantaneous level of a waveform while Volume is an aggregate of the accumulated Amplitude over time. The total volume of a saw wave is the addition of all harmonics' amplitudes at every positive integer multiple of the fundamental (ie the def of a saw). What a waveshaper does, in a nutshell, then is, on a sample rate basis, imposes a change in amplitude upon the input creating additional oscillations (in the case of, say, sinfolding) of the wave when it moves along a specific transfer curve. This is similar to how a compressor affects a signal whose volume exceeds the threshold value.
