That old prison is so odd, it doesn't have a huge perimeter fence or wall around it like most prisons do, you can just walk up to the front door. Its long since demolished now

I remember when this place was open, it closed in 1995 I think. Spring and Commerce Streets.

It closed on December 18, 1990. The prison had an execution on the final night that it was open, that of Buddy Justus, convicted of murder in Montgomery County and also under death sentences in Florida and Georgia for murders there. The last four remaining inmates were removed from the prison and shipped to Greenville the following morning.

That was the superintendent (warden) of the Virginia State Penitentiary, James Mitchell. He was warden there between 1978 and 1982.

Hanging, British style. 14 seconds from the hangman entering the cell to the drop. No absurd theatre,. Efficient, quick, and as far as medical knowledge can tell painless. Why do you Yanks have to make a 3 ring circus out of it?
