This police boat is completely worthless and totally inadequate in terms of performing an in-water rescue. It is not designed for in-water rescues. Without the aid of the ski, the distressed person would not have made it into the boat. The BHPD vessel was undermanned. Should be a minimum of 2 crew. One to helm the boat and one to assist the person in the water. Even then there is no way they could have hauled him into the boat. The person the water was a big kid and not wearing a PFD that was sized for his height and weight. Worked out this time though.

First, the jet ski he is trying to climb onto is still running and I noticed the jet pushing him off, so stay off the throttle, passenger stays low and turns around to help the guy up on the back, so his body and legs are further up. Then apply throttle slowly to calmer water. I have done rescues and in reality it is tough to sit here and say what would've worked "better", they guy made it to the boat and got in, officer did an outstanding job of controlling his craft and the guys on the ski did great as well.

Maybe, maybe not. I own a Sea Doo and the manual says when towing you have to pinch off the line that pulls water in for cooling. Without the engine running and creating the correct pressure, the sea water can push back up the cooling lines into the engine.

@@Coleman_Hif we were towing long distances I’d take the time to pinch it. Doesn’t really matter for short tows at low speed, especially when the ski is completely flooded as it was in this case. The rental guys down here tow strings of 4+ jet skis all the time and never pinch them off.
@Coreynone
@Coreynone Ай бұрын
It will be fine if the right person is working on it. You also do not need to pinch the line. The ocean water only cools the exhaust. Engine is closed loop cooling. Get it out of the water. Pull the spark plugs and turn over the engine to kick out water from the cylinders. Unplug all electronics and spray plugs with electric cleaner as well as fuse box. Let sit and dry. After that keep changing the oil until all signs of water is out of the engine. Once water out of oil go for a ride and enjoy. Worst thing will be having a 150lbs seat filled with water. I have saved many sunken jet skis and this one did not sink. It flipped which most likely water did not even get into the engine.
@barryf5479
@barryf5479 6 күн бұрын
Jet ski engine needs quick work. Drain oil which likely is full of water. Pull the plugs, spray oil in the cylinders. Not sure how watertight the EFI stuff is so may need some attendance. In the days of 2 cycle engines, all you had to do is pull the plugs, turn it over and drain the carbs. Then start it. We got a 100 Merc going in about a half hour after a capsize. Easy work back then.

They could improve things substantially if they were to enforce in/out right of way, but, the problem is, everyone wants to use the right side of the channel where it's calmer, and that's a recipe for disaster really.

First time commenting. Looking at this as The Totality of Circumstances. Gentleman “injured” on the jet ski has made some life choices. He’s morbidly obese to the point he can’t secure his PFD around his belly. Does the officer have a ladder on his boat? I’ve never seen a police car with a ladder. That’s usually fire trucks. The “injured” gentleman couldn’t pull his own weight up to the police boat. He managed to get himself finally on the support jet ski and climb onto the police boat. If you watch closely, the “injured” gentleman calmly walks on the police boat and pulls his shorts up. It wasn’t until the officer instructed him to get down then lay down on the deck did he look injured. As for the ski. Its fine. Could anyone have done anything better or different? Make better life choices! I live in Ohio, 6’2” 265. 38” waist. My brother lives in Florida. I watch this channel for the boats and peace of mind.

People that take jet ski's into the inlet really need to know what they're doing. I don't think they should be banned, simply because there's tons of other small boats that go in and out all the time that are just as susceptible to the waves as the jet ski's. If the person knows what they're doing and how to handle the jet ski, I don't see why it's a problem. It's all about experience.

I got run over several years ago by my husband when we were jet skiing in a cove. A wake boat was tearing up and down the cove and a huge wave picked his ski up and put it down on top of me. Our skis were the huge Yamaha SHVO’s and were quite heavy! It was a very bad scene. Thank the Gods for my vest which not only deflected his hull a little but kept me from drowning when I was knocked into the water unconscious. I was still hurt badly but I lived thanks to that vest. I bet if they started fining people for not having vests on their babies and young kids we would not see ignorant, careless people in the front of the boat with them. It’s a HUGE pet peeve of mine.

Man overboard recovery is hard in real seas; man overboard recovery with an injured survivor, single-handed on the rescue boat, with such a high-freeboard/gunwale--seems harder. The Coast Guard's 47 foot lifeboat has a side "step down" for precisely this reason. Is there any other make of boat the Bal Harbor Police could shift to with the same accommodation?

I'm sure Bal Harbor can afford it. Also, West Marine: $50 they can buy a boarding ladder.

If you look the fire rescue boat has a better design for this with the stepped stern.

If that rider had his jacket buckled he could have been grabbed onto. Without that how do you hold him?

I used to do marine patrol on a lake in WA. I feel for that cop. The proper way to do it would have been to position the boat on the other side of the victim and try to protect them a little bit, but its difficult at best when your by yourself. Why police departments staff patrol boats with only one officer is beyond me. The departments also need to stop buying standard boats. Get a custom boat built for rescue. Foam collar around it, dive door on the side. The cheap administration of that department failed the community, they failed that officer and they failed that victim and those bystanders. Lucky no one got killed.

As many of these that I have watched I always wonder why they don’t have a mini rope ladder or something for them to get on the boat more safe and effectively

Yes they should be ban all together from the inlet , they pose a danger to themselves and like this event if a "Fast boat" where to be coming bin 'hot' and it will not be able to see the individual particularly with those Waves and it's only a matter if time before one of them get run-over and sent to 6 feet under earth rather than water. Jet skis and boats don't mix well particularly if thise on the jet skis are not prepared or skill on their toys.

You ever see a boat capsize? Who is the first people on the scene to rescue the passengers? It's always the jet skis. Love them or hate them, they save they day 9/10 times.

@@wally7856 well the City does have life guards do they not? Have a couple in the inlet pay by the City and also Professionally Train , but if you want to Trust your life to someone who may not know how to proceed, Best example, in this clip what the so call Police what was he doing his first priority should have been the individual not the jet ski, and if they are there to give tickets why don't they on overload boat or checking for proper equipment, but with that boat he was not prepared for such emergency in the inlet. Shame on all the City Gov. Officials all they care is for $ and Water Police should be prepared for other things other than arrest people or give tickets. Imho. ❗

@@thetraveler5798 That cop had no business attending that scene by himself with no training and equipment. He made everything 10 times worse. Had a patient with an obvious back injury and lifted him and then took him out of the inlet over that chop to go get the jet ski. His actions may have paralyzed that guy. Absolute shit show.

Always buckle your life jacket. Not only does it work a whole lot better if you wind up in the drink, but it's much easier to recover somebody from the water when you can grab them by the shoulders of their PFD.
