In this video I show how I boil my cannonballs in wax. This is the same method that I use in preserving all of my found iron. I give some excellent tips and some dire warnings. I hope you enjoy!

Thanks for this vid, Aquachigger! You have probably mentioned in previous posts that it is important to not heat the wax too much so as not to reach the wax's flashpoint, but for those who haven't seen them, be careful to NOT heat the wax above 300 degrees(F)!!!! The flashpoint (at which the wax will ignite) varies depending on what type it is, but 300 should be safe for most. Thanks again, love your vids Beau (from a candlemaker who is just starting metal detecting).

Thanks for the video Beau. You have a way of transporting your viewers back to the civil war. I can almost hear the cannon and rifle fire while watching your videos. Like you said I can smell the tar of the exploding rounds. Those guys who fought then would never have imagined that the war would be brought back to life and relived this way. Thanks for all you do to let us appreciate those times and not to forget....

Love the videos. Looks like you, Chill Bill and Deep Digger Dan had a ball...I'm so jealous! I started watching Dans' videos, and then it snowballed in to everyone else's videos. I just started detecting about 2 years ago, but have had to put it on hold for physical reasons. So, I live vicariously through you guys. You have the perfect spot...again, so jealous! Keep the videos coming, so I don't go out of my mind up in Massachusetts.

Beau...Thanks for the in depth repeat of the cooking process. If I could offer one bit of advise that I also adhere to, (I mess around with wax, cooking oil, and sometimes molten lead),...please wear some eye protection, very important. Too bad you can't have a contest of some sort to give away some small test pieces of pitch/resin so we can light it at home to smell what it smelled like during war times. Or else I have to find my own shell...

Here's what I do to stop oxidation but retain patina: heat the objects in a toaster oven until you're sure they're purged of water. Let them cool off just until they're warm enough to handle. Dunk them in Gardz (an almost clear acrylic drywall sealer by Zinsser). Soak for a minute or so & blot with a towel to recover the original finish. After drying, there's no residue and the object is sealed. An old painter's trick...

Well I figured this would be a neat idea for guys like myself who are interested in oddities from the civil war but, ever though about putting the tar/pitch in small sand viles or a small container of some kind and selling them to a few folks like myself? I like to collect necklaces of different things and I though it would be a neat idea.

I have a question. I have found a Confederate armory lock with the original key. Its really rusty and I'm thinking of using electrolysis to get rid of the rust, and then waxing the lock to protect it. But, I want to be able to use the key to open it when I'm showing it and don't want to fill the lock with wax while its in the tub..What can I do to prevent the lock from filling with wax? Thanks for your help, love the videos

Well, growing up in the Piney Woods of Texas with Pine Trees and plenty of oil wells and having done hot Tar roofing I know those smells. Oh, and any walk on a Texas beach in the Summer will net you the Tar stink and it's nasty if you step in it barefooted-never get it off. ;)

I noticed that ball you were talking about had also a very small hole it the side, now I have a 42 pounder also with a small hole in the side and the best I could do to see what was inside it was see how far a incense would go in it and it went to the other side about 7 inches. At this point I would think it was safe and I do not plan on putting a drill to it or in the fire but would they load this up with black powder and would the hole also be a fuse hole of some kind.
