How do you keep mother mice from eating their babies?

You make sure they are happy and healthy before you breed them and take very good care of them during pregnancy, making sure they are not stressed. For first time moms, you try to have an older, experienced mouse, who they are bonded to, with them when they give birth. Some first time moms don't know what to do with the babies at first and let them get too cold, the babies die and then are eaten. If there is an older auntie there, she will keep the babies warm until the mom has finished giving birth. Sometimes when litters are too large, a mother mouse will cull some of the babies so the litter is a more manageable size. She will do the same to any sickly baby mice. My mice have rarely ever eaten live babies, just those that have already died. This is an instinct hardwired in them to keep the nest clean and recycle nutrients. A lot of animals do this, not just mice. You cannot judge them for this, they are innocents, they do not have the complex brains we humans have to decide if something is right or wrong, they just do what their instincts tell them to do.
