Don't have a JL or JT, but a JK, and still love watching this stuff and learned something new. Also, let's not gloss over the way he always presents not just the fix, but what is actually going on to cause the issue AND he goes over other options (wheels, spacers) and then shows us a extreme budget solution. Love this shit.

I'm so glad I found your channel! You explain things well. I've just got a 24 Jeep Wrangler Sahara and the first thing I wanna do is chnage the tires but I dunno which tires would be good for city driving (I will use it mostly like Cindy would) but occasional mild trailing (Colorado life) up in the mountains. You explain things brilliantly and very entertaining. Thank you so much. I need to save up for the tires. I spent mjajor bucks for my new ride and did not finance.NEW SUBBIE here.

Regarding tires and how you intend to use them and being that you live in an area that gets snow, I would recommend Nitto Terra Grappler G3 www.nittotire.com/light-truck-tires/terra-grappler-g3-all-terrain-light-truck-tire/ These are a great all terrain tire and have a true snow/ice rating.

Thanks for the tip. The best solution, though, is to get the correct wheels with the correct offset. I hate the idea of increasing my turn radius and maneuverability. Before installing my front stubby bumper. I found slight rubbing between the bumper filler and the larger 35". Filler removed, problem solved. Thanks for the good tips!
@wayalife
@wayalife 2 жыл бұрын
These are factory wheels and so they are the correct offset. Installing aftermarket wheels with different offset or less back spacing will move the steering axis inclination and that will adversely affect your scrub radius. They will also move the wheel center line and that will create more leverage and cause your ball joints and unit bearings to wear out prematurely. Clearly, with 35" tires or bigger, there are sacrifices that need to be made to clear components on your Jeep but that doesn't mean they are "correct".

Or, go with "pizza cutters" and install LT255/80R-17 (33" x 10.5") tires. I have the Toyo Open Country AT3's on my 2020 Willys on the factory 17" x 7" Moab wheels and they fit perfectly with no rubbing. Love your videos and really enjoy the Pippi series. Just offering info as I build my Jeep along similar lines. Oh, and for those with the automatic transmission, you'll need to have it re-programmed for the taller tires so it shifts properly. And, how smart is Ripley?! Wow! Keep living well, my friend! Pete - KI7LIL

Just about to buy my first Jeep, and trying to decide if I can go with a Sport rather than a Willys, though I would want to upsize the tires. Do I understand correctly that if the sway bar had remained stock as well as the front bumper, there shouldn’t have been any rubbing?
@wayalife
@wayalife 22 күн бұрын
To be fair, there was barely even any rubbing with what you see in this video. That said, it really depends on the tire size you run, how wide the tread is, how tall it is and even what brand it is as some are smaller than what is advertised.
@Dnasty1
@Dnasty1 Жыл бұрын
You are lucky your car is so high I have a lowered coupe and i'm trying to diagnose rubbing. To make it even more difficult it only does it when i'm not moving and holding the brake and turning close to or at full lock. I am not sure if it does it while driving because I would never turn that wide while going any significant speed but also it does not make this noise when I put the car in park and turn lock to lock. Only when holding the brake with some weight load on the suspension i'm assuming is causing this issue to present itself.

@wayalife
@wayalife 2 жыл бұрын
I'd prefer not to. From what I have seen, the Mopar lift yields over 3" of actual lift on a 4-door and that means it'd sit even taller on a 2-door. That'd be a bit much for what we're wanting and a lot more would need to be done to keep her riding nice at that height.

My 2-door Wrangler Sport arrives in a week. I'd like to remain stock except to switch out tires to BFG K02s, preferably the 285/70r17 size. Did you change the control arms in Pippi when you added your 285/70s? Is that necessary to keep factory alignment? Also, how much were your mileage and acceleration affected by the added size and weight?
@wayalife
@wayalife 4 ай бұрын
Jeep uses the same control arms even with 2" of lift and 35" tires as you will find on an XR package. So no, I did not change them out and there is no need to. Tire size will NOT affect alignment. Power loss was minimal and if you are getting your Jeep with an automatic, it will be negligible. I would recommend that you recalibrate your speedometer with something like a Jscan though.
@sharonmay6289

@@wayalife Thanks for your answer. My new Jeep Sport will be a manual transmission. How much will my mpg be diminished by the 285/70 tires?
@wayalife
@wayalife 4 ай бұрын
@@sharonmay6289 It really depends on the type of tread your tires will have than size. An aggressive mud terrain will have more rolling resistance than an all terrain and they will hurt your fuel economy more. Otherwise, not too much.

@@wayalife Thanks, that's good to know. I plan on putting on BFG K02s. The 255/75 weighs 46 lbs, and the 285/70 weighs 51 lbs. I'm using the stock wheels. These tires compare to the OEM at 32 lbs, so I worry about adding 19 lbs. at each corner.

Would you not do this on both sides? The wheels are tied together wouldn’t that put a slight strain on something
@kriptnite75
@kriptnite75 10 ай бұрын
Shouldn’t the stops both touch at the same time at full lock
@wayalife
@wayalife 10 ай бұрын
Umm, yes, the tie rod connects both sides and that is the exact reason why only ONE steer stop would touch at a full lock. As far as some kind of 'strain' goes, I have no idea what you might be imagining. Sorry.

Is there a lift on this Jeep? And what size tires? I'm going to use my stock Jeep wheels with 305/70r17 tires and add a 2 inch lift. I'm hoping I don't have any rubbing issues and I'll never trust wheel spacers.

No lift on this Sport. We are running 285/70R17 tires.

I also think the Nittos could be a bit larger for the same size compared to the KO2s that come on the rubicons. Not all 285/70r17s are the same.

You are correct, not all measure the same and these are a bit bigger. Also, after making this video, we measured both the JL and JK sway bars and found that the JK ones are actually wider at the bend. So, that is a factor as well.

hello new here, is two washers a big difference in turning diameter?
@wayalife
@wayalife Жыл бұрын
No. Just enough to stop the slight rubbing we were seeing in specific situations. Anything more and you would start to see a slight difference in turning.

Do's adding the washer cut down your turning radius, or is it neglible by only a few degrees, thx

With just the one washer, it's negligible.

Does this need to be done on both sides or just the rubbing side? I’ve always had rubbing in the same location on my Jk only on the passenger side
@wayalife
@wayalife 2 жыл бұрын
If you watch to the end of the video, you'll hear me say that IF I had rubbing on the other side, I would have installed a washer there. As in, you just need to adjust for the rubbing side.

Not anywhere near enough for me to see or feel a difference. A factory track bar cannot be adjusted.

@@Loss8131 The biggest tire that came on a standard TJ from the factory was 30". The Rubicon came with 31" tires but typically, you'd need at least a 1.75" coil spacer lift to clear them at a full flex. Anything bigger and you would really want to run wheel spacers or new wheels with less back spacing to prevent rubbing at a full turn.
