Wayfarer dinghy cruise - Plymouth, April 2017

Really lucky with some great conditions for our five day cruise in my Mk1 Wayfarer dinghy 'Shuna'. We launched at Mount Batten and explored the Lyhner River, Plymouth Sound and The Yealm before returning to Mount Batten.

I am 5 mins into the video and the best thing about this is the big smiles on the kiddies faces........That is what boating is all about.....BRILLIANT!

Splendid to see the views of Plymouth area scenery (yes, even including the warships) and despite the calm conditions, the lads enjoying the adventure. Having worked in the the USA for many years, missing the south coast from Cornwall to the Solent -- I especially enjoyed the nostalgic sights of the classic Wayfarer and the coast there. Thank you!

Have had bigger boats in the past but this has given me the inspiration to perhaps look for a wayfarer lot of things going for it particularly the versatility.

Yes the tent is great with lots of room inside, good sitting headroom all the way round due to the side poles between the support at the aft end of the boom and the shrouds, makes living on board quite comfortable. Don't really think there's a lot else to say!

A little late to the game but please tell you about mounting the motor. May wayfarer has a bouncy bulkhead inside the rear hatch where your mount is. What was your method of mounting the bracket?

Thanks for your comment, Shuna is a Mk1 originally with two blocks of foam in the aft buoyancy tank. I cut out the one on the port side in order to access the inside of the transom. Then drilled holes for bolts for the transom shoe for the (removable) engine bracket with a substantial ply pad on the inside of the transom to spread the load. The ply was glued with gap filling epoxy due to the roughness of the inside of the transom and then through bolted with the mounting shoe bolts. Its one of those jobs where the lots of thinking and measuring is required before you start drilling. Afterwards I added some closed cell foam into the aft tank to compensate for what I'd removed (the original stuff was pretty crumbly, well past its best, I'm sure it would have absorbed water had it got wet, so the new closed cell foam is much better). Great adventure, thanks for posting....I'm thinking your 'tent' set-up is probably the best arrangement I've seen on a wayfarer so far. Is it 'home knitted'?, bought?....did you find a pattern somewhere?..How does it perform when the weather isn't so great?

Thanks for your comment. Tent was bought second hand but in very good condition (made by Canvas Windmill who I believe are no longer in business, not sure what the options are now for buying anything new). It's pretty good in all weathers, it keeps the rain out and has survived a fair few windy nights!
