I'm sure you could, I watch many great tutorials like this one (and then take their advice given and utilise it on demo's and my existing plugin tools)... If you download the 15 day demo of comparable models, like for example you could download the IK Multimedia Comprexxor, or Softube Distressor or even Empirical Labs (the original hardware) software version, they all sound very similar (as I've done that) and then compare the one you download to the Waves DPR-402 and other compressors you have, you will be seriously surprised what sounds you can cook up with your existing plugins and how similar they'll be if not better... Give it a try it will improve your ears and knowledge on your existing tools also, I'm sure you will be surprised as I was with this exercise :-)

What type of compression do you use most? The distressor is a VCA(Voltage Controlled Amp.) compressor. There are 4 different types of compression VCA, FET, Optical, and Variable Mu(Tube).

Any idea why I get some distortion when applying even just a mild routine compression? I use a Rode NT2 mic through a Focusrite Clarett 2Pre USB, and stock Pro Tools plugins. I've tried moving the mic and changing distance between myself and the mic, but doesn't seem to help. I record in a bedroom so not an ideal space, but I've not had this issue in the past.

Distressor a classic compressor??? It is a pretty new one! Fairchild for instance is classic afaik that was used when music productions had some quality. Distressor and API2500 are new comps, not classic
